I took this from our office window at Hatfield on 22nd May 1987.
I don’t think the BAe Mosquito was there that day though but it was definitely around the time of two-ship formation photo-sortie. My log only shows one other visitor to Hatfield that day (G-BEPS a Belfast)

Baron G-GAMA was used as a photo-ship on a number of occasions.

About Evita, remember, it’s a film of the west-end show, not a standard film biography.
It’s my favorite musical…despite the fact Modonna is in it.

I understand that it’s from a stage show – most musicals are. I just found the constant singing of all the dialogue slightly annoying. I don’t know of many other musicals like that.

    Anyway, onto some more movies….

    7 Days to Noon

British thriller from 1950. Usual understated style with lots of wooden and/or overacting but very thought-provoking. The thought of someone detonating a nuclear weapon in the middle of a city is still relevant today. A great vignette of life in post-war London.

    Never Let Me Go

Kiera Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield in a story about three children/young adults who grow up knowing what their purpose in life is. Beautiful thought-provoking science-fiction.

    The Trouble with Harry (1954)

Small American town deals with a dead body. Great stuff. Hitchcock at his best.

    Platoon

One of the best war films ever made. Shows the insanity that was the Vietnam war.

The F-14/ “Zero” dogfight in the Final Countdown was pretty good. In fact, all the aeroplane sequences were good from that movie.

I started watching the new series then gave up about half way through the first episode when I realized it the same tired, retreaded stuff. “What sort of super car would you buy if you didn’t want a Ferrari?” It could have been re-titled “Another tired old excuse to drive sports cars very fast at the licence-payers expense”

It needs to be refreshed or put out of our misery.

    Evita

Hadn’t seen this before so we gave it a go. A couple of the songs are OK but I did find it irritating that the entire thing is sung opera-style. For such a serious story it seemed inappropriate somehow.

    Species

Alien/monster thing with Natasha Henstridge. OK I guess but not the best by a long chalk.

    Species II

More of the same with a lot more nudity in it. Not nearly as good as the first one. Poor.

There should be more tolerance and guidance and there should also be respect and politeness.
Because you don’t really know who you are in discussion with, it seems that rudeness and insult are somehow OK. Well, they aren’t.

I detect a bit of wriggling now whereas a simple apology or retraction would have done. 🙂

Your second paragraph has, and not for the first time degenerated into rather insulting generalizations.

The money for the Olympics has been spent – deal with it.

£81m? – if only it was true. I don’t how much apples are on your planet though?

The first paragraph from the BBC article “Europe’s largest bell will ring to start a £27m Olympic opening ceremony”

I guess £81m sounds better to make your point I suppose.

As one of the comments on the BBC webs site said.

    – Practically all tickets sold on day 1. Some events massively oversubscribed.

    – Construction ahead of schedule and on budget.

    – Employment for thousands of people over the last 5 years.

    – Affordable accommodation.

    – Regeneration of a run down area.

    – Major boost for UK tourism.

What will it take to stop people moaning, be positive and start taking pride in the nation’s achievements?

    Indeed.

Your point number 2 is a great idea. Maybe some large capital project would be in order involving perhaps regeneration of some derelict areas of a big city ( you see where this going don’t you)……

It is all irrelevant anyway, the Olympics were planned before the economic crisis broke and there was no going back.
