Your point number 2 is a great idea. Maybe some large capital project would be in order involving perhaps regeneration of some derelict areas of a big city ( you see where this going don’t you)……

It is all irrelevant anyway, the Olympics were planned before the economic crisis broke and there was no going back.

Arthur. Looks like you’re in a minority of one – so far !

    John Green

I’ve never been afraid to go against the flow and fortunately this forum isn’t particularly representative of the UK population.

I guess what the Olympics means to some is just something else to whine about rather than the government, the weather or whatever. I, for one, am looking forward to it and if Britain’s athletes perform as they did in Beijing then it should be something to for some of us at least to be proud of. The rest of you can hide in your sheds until it’s over. Suits me.

    You should watch “Zero Hour”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051221/ This is the film Airplane! was based on.
It is almost scene for scene Airplane! but with out the additional humour, even the hero is called Stryker. Watch it and it will make Airplane even funnier.

I hadn’t heard of this movie – I’ll keep an eye out for it.

    @Arthur Pewtey
I think my generation have much bigger problems left over by the previous generation than lack of inspiration for sport šŸ˜Ž

Er.. you were the one that wanted free sports facilities.

Mr. Green. I think you’ve posted in the wrong thread or at least joining in a different “discussion” than everyone else.

Maybe the Olympic motto should be “Britain – taking moaning to the next level”

Do you not think that the Olympics may inspire a generation to take up some sport or other?
Then again maybe you’re right. Maybe we should carry on with what is a gold medal sport for the UK. i.e. bitching and moaning- we are after all the world’s best.

According to wiki it has been going since 1997. The bid was first shown to the government in 2000. They were awarded to London in 2005.

Why not be positive about it? Use it as an excuse to show what the UK is capable of. It has the potential to generate a huge amount of money and publicity for the UK and we should try and make the most of the opportunity.

Sport is in itself pointless. It has no value and life could carry on without it. It would also be that little bit less interesting and a bit duller so sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

Didn’t a 707 land at Northolt by mistake in the 1960s or 70s?

Well, as expected a movie such as this was bound to provoke comment and controversy. If, as has been suggested, that this film is aimed at a particular market and it has succeeded in that market then it has done a good job but let’s not forget why movies are made in the first place. Entertainment. Pure and simple entertainment.

The CGI involved is a case in point. Sadly those of us in the UK have only been able to watch the trailers and in those I can see very little to complain about. If the effects make the action look dramatic and exciting then that surely is the point. If there are more rivets than there should be or markings are the wrong colour then who cares? We didn’t bother when almost every other war movie ever made has some historical or factual inaccuracy. Why is this one different?

As far as being ā€œrevisionistā€ history is concerned, what movie isn’t? Name one war movie that hasn’t altered facts or changed the order of events to make a better or clearer narrative.
If it is ā€œrevisionistā€, is it any more revisionist than the countless war movies that simply removed black people from history entirely?

I am frankly staggered that some can have such a strong opinion on movie that they have never seen. Unfortunately such blinkered views seem to be prevalent nowadays; perhaps following the crowd and being swayed by other’s opinions rather than forming one’s own informed opinion is too much to resist at times.
I have no idea whether I will like it as a film or not but I will refrain from saying so until I’ve actually seen it. My opinion will then have some credence.

This is a story worth telling and if it stimulates the younger generation to at least consider what has gone on in their history then it has succeeded.

    The High and the Mighty

1954 John Wayne disaster movie. A DC-4 barely makes it to San Francisco after suffering a few problems. The prototype disaster movie and the one where all the Airplane! jokes came from. (even Robert Stack is in it!) A bit cheesy but interesting from an aviation point of view. Based on an Ernest K Gann story.

    Hereafter

Matt Damon and Cecile de France in a touching story about death and the afterlife. Clint Eastwood directs another very human story. Sometimes a bit slow but always strangely compelling.

    127 Hours

Beautifully filmed and acted Danny Boyle drama about a man who gets trapped in the Utah mountains. Not sure if such a film is ” enjoyable” as such but nevertheless a fine movie.
