I don’t have to justify anything – it’s an internet forum not a court of law.
With the sort of attitudes prevalant here, maybe Scotland would indeed be better off without the English.
Anyway the discussion has been reduced to name-calling and stereotypical abuse (from a mod no less) so I’ll bow out.

I wonder if Scots whine about bailing out Northern Rock – probably not.

Personally I think that England owes Scotland and Wales a great deal since Thatcher decimated the industries of both nations and didn’t bother putting anything in their place.

Scotland and Wales pay their way in the UK and the union is the stronger for it.

    I’m with the pewtey.

The Englanders aren’t arrogant enough to assume we can do without Scot/Wales but the Welsh and Scots are being stupid to assume they can run their own economy.

You are most definitely not with me. You can keep your nationalistic comments to yourself thanks.

Maybe some in England really do think it is all about them and all the things that happened to the UK in the past were all down to England. What a shame that history is disregarded already.

I’ve seen it all now – immigration being blamed for petrol prices.

Let’s face it, petrol would be pretty much the same price even without a recession.

I also have to say that running “a luxury car with a big lump” then whining about petrol prices must be a joke. If you are suffering due to the price of petrol why not do as many have done and buy a more economical car. A no-brainer I would have thought.

All you have done is to say “I think it would be” and “It would be”, but nowhere do you explain why you have come to that conclusion. But I assume it is because you do not know why England would be worse off. If you do know why I would be delighted to hear your argument.

Just a few off the top of my head.

No.1 The oil is in Scottish territorial waters. That would make England worse off. Definitely.
No.2 The army. 10% of the population but 15-20% of the army. That would make the English army worse off.
A general point. As I explained a couple of times the great things Britain has done have been as a United kingdom. It was only after the union that Britain became a true world power. Britain has always been better acting as a whole. I do not believe that the most English are arrogant enough to assume that everything that has happened to the UK in the last 300 years they could have coped with alone. But then again maybe some people really do think that…

So England bailed out the banks did they Moggy? Did Scots and Welsh and Irish suddenly stop paying tax as well. Was it only Scottish, Welsh and Irish investors that stood to lose? It was a bail-out by a UK government to UK companies that stopped a much much worse crisis.

I think that the UK will be a much poorer place, and not just financially, if the union is dissolved. The British Empire, two world wars, innovation and invention for the world – these were British efforts – not English, Scottish or Welsh efforts.

The United Kingdom would be considerably worse off if Scotland or Wales became independent. If Scotland does veer towards independence let’s hope they don’t take their disproportionate contingent of the armed forces with them.

There’s two that I wrote just for starters. There are many more. I can’t be bothered writing any more if nobody’s bothering to read them.

For many years now, due to different legal systems, much of the legislation passed in Westminster has been applicable to England and Wales only. Scotland either already had that legislation or it was done in a different way. How do you think the West Lothian question arose if was a UK only parliament?

Subjugation is an emotive and totally irrelevant word in this context and has more relevance to the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the clearances. We have all moved on rather a long way since then.

I’m not sure we have. I think that what we are seeing is the Scots and the Welsh exercising their right to have a bit of a say in what goes in in their own country. The English have been able to do so for a while now at Westminster.

Fortunately views about dissolving the union are not widespread. It would make Britain and England a much poorer place.
