Subjugation is an emotive and totally irrelevant word in this context and has more relevance to the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the clearances. We have all moved on rather a long way since then.

I’m not sure we have. I think that what we are seeing is the Scots and the Welsh exercising their right to have a bit of a say in what goes in in their own country. The English have been able to do so for a while now at Westminster.

Fortunately views about dissolving the union are not widespread. It would make Britain and England a much poorer place.

What on earth has PC got to do with petrol prices? Answer: nothing at all.

The answer to high petrol prices is to reduce our dependency on OPEC produced oil. They are adjusting output and prices to maximize profits at the expense of the Western economy. Libya produces less than 5% of OPEC’s ouptut so should have a minimal effect on price. If there are problems in the rest of the Middle East though, that might be a differnt story. Having said that, the first Gulf War did not have much effect on oil prices. Why is this?

Osborne dumped the fuel price stablizer early in his tenure. He may delay the 1p duty rise in the budget – that’ll be about all. He needs the revenue too much to drastically reduce taxes.

They are still nations – believe me. Think of it as payback for centuries of subjugation and they are getting something out of the union at long last. It’s only fair that after Thatcher’s single handed effort to destroy the industries of Scotland, Wales and Northern England that at long last something decent should come out of an element of self-determination.
I am not in favour of full independence but an element of sorting their own affairs, is, I think a good thing.
The United Kingdom would be considerably worse off if Scotland or Wales became independent. If Scotland does veer towards independence let’s hope they don’t take their disproportionate contingent of the armed forces with them.

As far as the West Lothian question is concerned, I assume then it was OK for a Tory government to make decisions about Scotland where they had no mandate whatsoever? If I recall, the last Major government had no MPs in Scotland at all?

Hi Anne, I couldn’t agree with you more it should be a prerequisit upon entering the Country,to permenantly live here, that all over say 14yrs of age speak English.
    Lincoln .7

Does that include the native Welsh and Gaelic speakers as well?

I wonder if all those the emigrate to Spain or France for their retirement learn to speak Spanish or French. I doubt it somehow.

I have to say that it doesn’t surprise me that immigration is being blamed now for not filling in a census form. Immigrants seem to be blamed for everything else. The census is important for planning purposes. Why not just fill it in honestly and truthfully?
Interesting that another thread was complaining about respect and discipline in the younger generation and yet many of those same posters are planning on wilfully disobeying authority just to make their “point”, whatever that point is.

I wonder what exactly is the problem with the Welsh and the Scottish having a say in what happens in their own nation. It’s happened in England for long enough so why not the other parts of the UK. The UK has been at its best as a united country but that does not mean that the nations that make up the UK shouldn’t have say in affairs that affect them directly. Do the English really want to carry on subjugating the other parts of the UK? It appears that they do.

The bad spelling is amazing and also I fear the only consistant and real thing about any of his aution items.

    Seriously?

    I’m sorry, I couldn’t let that one go. 😀

I have to say that the language used by many on here is very rude and confrontational. There are lots of guesses and assumptions from very little information. I have no idea whether this chap and his items are genuine or not but there are ways of putting your concerns into words without appearing snide and supercilious.

No, I did the dumping, nice prejudgement though. My views aren’t “anti-Scottish”, my views are if you aren’t happy, then leave, don’t expect me to be begging you to stay, its not going to happen. And you would suggest that, you’re Scottish, furthermore I would suggest your views are three times as worthless since you are biased, nationalist and prejudgemental.

No, I’ve read this a few times and still don’t get it. Still, you carry on your anti-Scottish diatribe, you clearly get some satisfaction from it.
Your previous posts on airfield closures and Scottish bias were so full of contradictions I wouldn’t know where to start. So I won’t.

The only thing I am biased against is intolerance.

She is making generalizations about children’s morals, which for the most part don’t bear any resemblance to what actually happens in real life. Most children don’t think it’s OK to steal or misbehave. Some do but most do not. Her sweeping generalizations are, in fact, quite disrespectful of the many hard-working children in education trying to make the best of the ****-up the adult world has made for them.

Maybe encouragement and support might be more productive than insult and abuse.

Ms Lumley is suggesting, from her rather privileged position, that we return to a time which, with the benefit of rose-coloured glasses, was better. It wasn’t for a majority – far from it.

Maybe we should bring back abusing children with physical punishment. Maybe we should bring back some real old-fashioned values like intolerance and bigotry.

Building camps and working on farms – honestly:rolleyes:
