“Some centroamerican pilots were also formed in Spain, at least i know one brazilian pilot in the Armada flying Sea Kings, and also some argentineans with Sea Kings”
Tks for the info, I never knew that Brazilian Navy pilots flying exchange postings with Spanish Navy. I knew only that Brazilian Navy pilots do regularly postings with the Royal Navy flying Super Lynkx.
“i recall 1 such experience of fach. at red flag, but no more, maybe our chilean brothers can share some light about this point.
another, now that Luftwaffe’s Migs are no more, i wander if the usaf will be looking to practice some more…lets say, with Peruvian Migs? would be cool , but in reality, i doubt
any news abou cruzex?
see ya in Bahia … “
Hi Camaro, would be really nice 🙂
No news about Cruzex. Right now FAB and FAP are operating together in an exercise called Perbra in which FAB AT-26 Xavantes and FAP A-37 Dragonflies are practising interceptions against mock drug transport aircraft. You can see if you access http://www.fab.mil.br, there is a link with the operation´s website, worth a look.
Wait until the Carnival to come to Bahia, it´s awesome.
Regards
“Hmm… I think chileneans are frequent participants of the red flag’s exercises . And every year France air Force trains with us here in Brazil along with another neighbours ( Cruzex ) as well as the US National Guard ( Tiger Operation ) . Thats all I remember for now .”
Tks for the info F5M, but i´m referring to pilots assigned to foreign squadrons such as the example I have given. I´m remember when I went to an airshow in São José dos campos city (at Embraer´s plant) in which an army fennec gave an outstanding display with a French pilot at the controls.
I don´t know if Brazilian fighter pilots regularly do this kond of exchanges.
Regards
“Cool regards A-29 what do you know about a common space Program of all the Latin American i bet if Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico decided to build a common space Program we could advance faster Argentina and Chile they have great aerospace capabilities and Mexico is now trying to catch up with the rest of that group”
Tks Flogger, despite the economy of these countries are getting stronger, I don´t think they have enough budget to create a common space program. Brazil have experienced a huge setback on its space program due to the accident on the Alacantara base in 2002 in which 21 people died.
Regards,
“Some picture of the Domestic and sadly most advanced latin american designed and built combat aircraft the Embraer Tucano. An Argentinian Super Etendard and a Ecuatorian Sepecat Jaguar,
Peruvian Su-22 Fitters and Mirage 2000, Mirage F1 Ecuador
Kfir C10 ecuador”
Flogger,
Tucanos of the smoke squadron are no longer using this camo, i´m attaching a pic with the new camo.
Unfortunately Ecuadorian Jaguars are currently in storage due to lack of funds to operate them.
Regards,
“Spanish is directly decended from Latin which why it is one of the group of languages called romance languages, romance as refering to Roman, not romantic. Youll notice alot of “hard words” in english share the same root as spanish words, thats because they are the part of english decended from Latin.”
You can also use the same explanation for Portuguese. It is much more easy, for us, to understand spanish than the contrary.
Nice wellcome for both of you guys 🙂

Report: US$900M Arms Deal Is Close
By Lyuba Pronina
Staff Writer
China, the country’s No. 1 arms customer, is close to signing a contract for air defense systems worth as much as $900 million, Vedomosti reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the deal.
State arms dealer Rosoboronexport and the Chinese Defense Ministry initialed a contract for the delivery of between four and eight batteries of S-300PMU air defense systems a few weeks ago, Vedomosti reported.
The contract will be signed by the end of the year, one source told the paper.
The manufacturer of the S-300 system, Almaz-Antei Air Defense Concern, refused to comment Thursday, as did Rosoboronexport.
Domestic arms producers and exporters are particularly tight-lipped about deals with China following a bilateral agreement that makes military and technical cooperation classified information.
With S-300 systems retailing for roughly over $100 million per battery, four to eight batteries would be worth $400 million to more than $800 million, said Konstantin Makiyenko, deputy head of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies in Moscow.
China already has 12 batteries of S-300 systems, Makiyenko said. It acquired eight batteries in the 1990s. Earlier this year, Russia completed the delivery of four more batteries, Interfax reported.
“While the existing S-300 batteries cover the key administrative and industrial centers of Beijing and Shanghai, the new systems will cover areas that face Taiwan,” Makiyenko said.
At the same time, China will continue purchasing Sukhoi fighter jets, he said. Last year China reportedly received 19 Su-30MKK fighters and is expected to receive 24 naval Su-30s on a contract from last year.
It has been reported that a new deal for a similar number of fighters is in the works and is expected to be finalized with China soon.
“I estimate that China will need a further 150 fighters, which they could either buy or manufacture under a Russian license,” Makiyenko said.
Sukhoi fighter jets are the country’s best selling arms product.
Some 150 Su-30s and 70 MiG-29s are likely to be exported by the end of 2010, Ruslan Pukhov, editor of the Moscow Defense Brief, said on Thursday.
Forty-eight Su-30s may be delivered to China, up to 24 to Vietnam, 24 to Indonesia, 24 to Brazil and 10 to India, he said, adding that MiGs would most likely be acquired by countries in Africa and the Middle East.
“That’s the problem of an arm race, when country buy more than they could afford in a “normal” way”
For South America, it is impossible to have an arms race. As was said before, no nation here can afford, the acquisitions is simply to replace old types as Chile did, Brazil is doing and probably Venzuela and Argentina will be doing in near future (Mig-29 was offered for both)
I think they have 12 jets but i will confirm
“A couple of things
The Su-35 has NOT come top of the Air Force evaluation – nothing like. The FAB recognises that the Su-35, as offered, does not exist. They know it is a paper airplane. Talk to anyone within the Air Force and they will tell you that they’d *love* to have one, sure they would, but it would bankrupt the FAB with the time, effort, money, blood, sweat and tears that it would take to turn it into a recognisable, operational machine. The Su-35 is going nowhere.
Also, all the talk about Russian help for the space programme, Russian meat contracts etc. etc. – all of that emerged AFTER the tenders had been submitted. If it’s not in the RFP submission, it cannot be considered as part of the bid.
The Mirage 2000 hasn’t won either. If it had, Embraer would already have been proclaimed the winner and given the contract. It is clear that the Mirage 2000 bid has stalled badly – failed in fact – but, in the run up to the election, it’s now impossible to announce that.
That leaves the Gripen – it has cons for Brazil, for sure, but it has WAY more pros. Not least of which is that Brazil knows it can trust its Swedish partners. It can’t trust the French (on previous experience) and it can’t even understand the Russians. Gripen will give the FAB the best deal in terms of technology, capability and affordability – with a clear growth path for the future.
It is the Gripen that is sitting at the top of the FAB’s list.
However, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. The competition is sliding dangerously to the right and even Embraer now acknowledges that cancellation, deferment or the option of an interim fighter is very much back on the cards.
So keep an eye on what is happening with ACS. Embraer is now BIG pals with Lockheed Martin. The ACS deal brings Embraer into a whole new league and opens doors that it could never have imagined. Even though the FAB has a long-standing mistrust of the USA and is desperate to keep away from it as an equipment supplier, on a government-to-government level wheels are turning.
What’s wrong with accepting a few second-hand F-16s in return?
You have been warned.”
Su-35 exists, is not operational in Russian AF, only in test centre, but exists. FAB officials have evaluated it and did the same with the rest of the jets involved on the contest.
The range of offsets from the Russians are big, aside from transfering technology of the jet itself, includes integration of the R-77 with the other jets operated by FAB (meaning F-5M) as well as the help to boost Brazilian space program.
All specialized newspapers here have published that Su-35 won, the government and FAB official position have denied, off course, because thereis a lot of supporters for Embraer, not the M2000, but for Embraer.
Gripen, despite a good fighter, has few chances. According to an recent article Mirage 2000Br came in second place.
You are right with this new implication, i mean the contract won by LM/Embraer to provide ACS aircraft based on ERJ-145. I continue to support an interim decision, meaning, buy a used fighter and for that i still vote for the MLUS from Holland.
Regards,
“Maybe the Brazilians here could tell us better. But my impression is that Embraer is considered a Brazilian company whether it has minority French partners or not. In fact, it is probably the most well-known Brazilian firm in the world (next to Pele who is a major Brazilian corporation all by himself )
Despite the tragic setback from the explosion, the space program hasn’t stopped even as they work to rebuild the launchg site. Brazil and China are working on their third and fourth CBERS satellites.
And they are already planning for the fourth one to be launched from Alcantara.
The space program is important but it is progressing so Brazil has no need to jeopardize Embraer’s share in the civilian market by funding Sukhoi for fighters that are good but not critical to Brazil’s security.”
Yes, Embraer is a sort of national pride.(you are 100% right about Pelé 🙂 .
As I told before, we don´t need a brand new fighter, no matter if its the Flanker, M2000 Br, Gripen or Block 50/52 Viper. We can go with a used one with Embraer backing up the project, as for example OGMA does with the F16s in Portugal (i support the MLU ones from Holland). The money for the project, initially US$ 700 million can be used to increase and upgrade our space program, rebuild and upgrade Alcantara launch base, do exchage program with nations that has the expertise (we already do something with China).
Embraer´s goal is not built fighters. The experience on sales with the AMX, despite a good jet, was not good enough, only eight jets sold to Venezuela, but, the contract was not signed yet. Embraer could win and build the Mirage 2000 here, gain expertise and project its own fighter, but, could face a huge loss if fail to sale it, and, this is a possibility (see AMXs). Also, see the Super Tucano, a revolutionary airplane but, aside from FAB orders, another 10 was sold to Dominican Republic.
Embraer focus is on commercial aircraft with a line of very nice airplanes.
Avibrás is a company that build weapons. Most of the FAB weapons program have been developed at Avibrás. All new bombs, PGMs, CBUs, the new SEAD missile are currently been developed there. In the near future, FAB wants to be independent in this area. Lets´see.
Regards
“Im my opinion I think we should cancel the FX ( I used to think the oposite a few months ago ) but now seeing options like the F16MLU , Qatar’s M2000 ( wow we would solve a diplomatic issue here betwenn India and Pakistan ) not to talk the stocks of US and Russia which may be full due to the Cold War . And now in Brazil until more important economic reforms go on we gotta keep a high primary surplus to avoid turbulances so I would pospone it to 2025 at least ( when the AMXs gonna retire) so we would ask for more F-Xs than now giving us more bargain power not to talk about new planes like Rafale that would be cheaper .”
I agree. We can go with a used fighter, in terms of SA scenario is more than enough even to deploy to a conflict (very remote possibility, just an example).
In near future the possibility to buy a more modern airplane such as Rafale or Typhoon makes more sense. I don´t think Embraer is pursuing the development of a new fighter.

Elections and Nationalistic Appeal

Brazilian Government nationalist appeal is influencing the brazilian air force (FAB) modernization plans. Upgrade of old tactical aircraft AMX A-1, FAB will cost US$ 400 millions, for 53 units, but the spending will create jobs in the country, in the Mectron, São José dos Campos (SP), Aeroeletrônica( owned by israeli ELBIT), Porto Alegre (RS), responsible by radar and avionics production to be used in the aircraft upgrade. Also jobs at new Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto(SP). This decision recover a domestic military project, not being considered spend in new aircrafts.
AMX modernization indicates the nationalist way for another military tender, supersonic fighters F-X, replacing for obsolete Mirage III, a buy estimated to cost US$ 800 millions. One Air Force source confirmed yesterday that president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is thinking to advance the decision on F-X Program and call the National Defence Council ( Conselho de Defesa Nacional) for early september, before the municipal elections of 3rd October. A victory of Embraer leaded consortium ( Mirage 2000BR) would be very welcomed by candidates linked to the government, specially the Workers Party ( PT).
By the way a decision giving the victory to Embraer would be the only way to the government, that always promessed reequip Armed Forces and at same time increment national industry. Air Force members state that if this solution was not possible, only way is to follow ahead with a plan B: cancel the tender and buy used fighter in the international market, a solution that sound patriotic since the scarcity of resources.
In favour of Embraer the Pentagon decision to choose a consortium where the company is member to supply the next generation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircrafts for US Army and US Navy.
“Sorry mate, but according with the Brazilian Air Force Web Site, this is not true.
The Brazilian government is still discussing who is going to win this context.
So, no F-X winner yet
My opnion is that politics will play a major role in this context, more than technical capabilities, at least all candidates are good fighters… “
Yes, in an article, FAB have denied due to the lobby. But, everyone knows that Flanker won in all analysis. An article was published today in an important journal “Correio Braziliense” from the capital Brasilia. Articles were wrote in many important newspapers throughout the country, One thing is 100%, Su-35 Flanker won. But, as I said in my first post….Embraer don´t want to lose this contest and the lobby is huge and a possibility to cancel the project is considered.
Regards
The pilot was Capt. Kim Campbell callsign KC.
