“What will the upgrade entail? Any chance of ever seeing a radar installed? Throwing a small radar in the nose and getting something like the Derby/R-Darter might make them feel a little better about the delays in the F-X program.”
Well, the radar in place in Brazilian AMXs is the locally developed SCP-01. The upgrade will also consider an improved version of this radar, glass cockpit, data-link, NVG capable, new HOTAS, laser designators for PGMs. Basically the new AMX will have almost the same avionics of the ALX as well as the upgrade F-5. I think that is a very smart decision.
According to a specialized Brazilian magazine, the upgrades will start in year 2006.

“What kind of problems A-29??
As far as I know, Derby BVR missile has been successfully integrated to almost the entire Chilean F-5E Tigre III fleet since early 2002, and several test launches have been performed with great success.
Perhaps you can reproduce the text of that magazine please?
Thanks in advance amigo!
Condor”
Hi Condor, well the text don´t say too much, says that Chilean AF is having troubles in integrate the missile and the tests it flew out of the parameter, but don´t explain too much.
Perhaps what he said was crap. 😀
BTW, I saw a program in Cable tv with an incident in the late 70´s when Chile F-5s were sent to intercept a patrol of A-37 not picked on the radar which was BTW intercepting an UFO. With interview with the pilots involved, one of them the current CO of the Grupo 3 which flies the A-36 Halcon. Very nice 🙂
Saludos
“Not exactly. What was removed was Air Base designation (now you can’t say for sure – unless you have a good database -, for example, if a given F-5E is based in Canoas or in Rio de Janeiro).
Anyway, I still have no idea what the tail codes for this 3 AT-29’s will be.”
Primer55,
So, there are no tail codes, right? We can identify that the F5s in grey paint scheme are the ones from Canoas and the camo ones are from Santa Cruz. As we have one type of Mirage, it´s esy to identify them. But the AMXs, Tucanos fleets is a bit difficult.
“I think Super Tucanos have chaff/flares launcher as well as RWR but Im not sure .”
F5M – Yes, the Super Tucano is fitted with these equipments.
“……in FAP’s experience its almost routine shuting down or attacking drug related positions, i’m not sure but i think our FAB’s brothers have “talked a bit” with FAP’s dudes, it wouldnt be first time they help each other.
Camaro.”
Hy Camaro, well FAB officials are in contact with Grupo 51 pilots (Tucano) as well as the Grups that operates the Dragonfly and even the Frogfoot as our Peruvian brothers know how to do this job. The same applies for Colombians.
“HEY A-29 I WANNA GO TO THE “CARNAVAL DE RIO… “
AS BELLAS GAROTTAS DU BRASIL “
The Carnaval in Rio is the most famous, but, only for the parade. If you want to have a lot of fun with party 24 hours aday during almos seven days, go to Bahia. The Carnival there is on the streets, people from all over the country go there and is really enjoyable. If you wanna see beautiful people, go there. 😀
“Well I did not really suggest the K-8 but just used it as an example. Also what kind of PGMs can the Super Tucano carry?”
Sorry if I was rude.
The PGM that Super Tucano are related to the Mk82 family (500lbs)
Flex297 – I agree with you, just in case it can carry.
“do the drug smugglers use boats in the amazon area rivers ?”
Yes, Brazilian Army as well as Colombian and Peruvian has round o´clock patrols in the jungle to try to intercept such actions.
“How many Super tucanos the FAB has bought???”
Initially the order is for 99 aircrafts divided in 74 two seaters and 25 single seaters.
“In which camo pattern the first three examples were delivered?”
Will be applied the sam of the pictures showed in this thread which, BTW, will be same applied to the upgraded AMXs and F-5s.
“What about their tail codes??”
All tail codes has been removed from AF combat fleet.

I do not agree with you.
It is not a limited turbo prop aircraft. It has the latest state of the art avionics available, quite advanced, data link, HOTAS, glass cockpit, NVG capable. Also capable of firing AAM (Sidewinder class of missiles such as the Brazilian Piranha), two .50 machine guns, one on each wing, capable of 1.5 tons of ordnance, including PGM. It´s cheaper to operate than the K-8 and for FAB needs, has all avionics that are currently being applied to the fleet of F-5s and AMXs and in the future to the new fighter.
As in the amazon region, all drug dealers did not use fast transports jets, it fits perfectly for the mission. Colombia and Peru has a huge success in downing drug transports aircrafts with its armed versions Tucanos (AT-27).
FAB tested in the past its fighter jets in intercepting small airplanes and the results were not so good.
FAB has at least 12 two seaters AMXs. If funds permit, we will be acquiring another batch of AMXs which will bring the total of 15 two seaters (in fact one was lost in an accident)
In fact Super Tucano is a turboprop aircraft, although it is fast, it cannot follow a jet, even carrying AAM (due to range). In this case AF jets will sent, as the reason why Brazilian fighter jets are regularly deployed to the Amazon region. For light transports, it fits perfectly.
I like the Extra 300 used by the Halcones (Chilean AF) and the SU-29 used by Cruz Del Sur (Argentine AF) aerobatic teams.
“I’m not sure if the Turkish Stars jets are upgraded or not.”
No, the F5s from Turkish Stars were not upgraded.
“I believe Chile’s Tiger III’s have Derby capability so you have two F-5 upgrades that give the plane a BVR capability for the first time. Makes the F-5 a whole new airplane in many ways.”
I read recently in Aircraft Illustrated that the Chileans are having problems to integrate the derby in their F-5s. Let´s see if they can workout on that.
“we , at singapore has one of the best f-5 in the world’
I know, Singapore´s F-5s got a major upgrade, very well advanced. The same applies for Chile as well as Brazil.
I found one, an RF-5E
“In any case I must agree this is quite an impressive deal for Embraer. I’m glad they are having some military success outside the AMX. I’d like to see the AMX get some more orders though….I like that little plane.”
Phantom II, don´t forget that Embraer´s major military success was the T-27 Tucano turboprop trainer sold to ten countries including France and UK (license built by Shorts). The sales for the AMX did not materialize as expected with exception of 08 jets that Venezuela got but not delivered yet.
The ERJ-145 is a very good looking airplane. I saw, last year, FAB R-99B and it is impressive.
I guess the F-16 is coming to equip FAB either a brand new or a used one, but, the chances are great and with Embraer on the deal.
“So, if that is true and in the near future the Super Hornet is equipped with the APG-70 (AESA) radar and its stealthier. (not truely stealthy) Wouldn’t the Super Hornet be a far superior than the F-15 Eagle is the Air Superiority Role?”
I think so, the SH can provide top cover with the same success of the F-15. Its all about proper tactics.
