Sounds good, but what about Grupo 4 in Punta Arenas (South)? The Mirages Panteras are based there. This base will close with the retirement of the Mirages?…………..i don´t believe, as this base is strategic for Chile. My guess is a squadron of F-16 MLU will be based there.

Grupo 3 is an A-37 Dragonfly sqdn? If yes, what a step for its pilots, 🙂

I think the Noth side of Chile will be pretty well defended with brand new Vipers plus the F-5s.

    Cheers, A-29

    Wolf,

Nice pics. Which group those Vipers will be assigned? is for Grupo 10?

BTW, 18 former Dutch MLU Vipers were purchased. Six will arrive this year and the other 12 by next year. I read in AFM that they will replace the Mirages on both Grupos 4 and 8. Is that correct.

    Congrats for this acquisition.

I Think the best way is to upgrade the current fleet of F-5s, getting 12 or 14 more (both E and F models) and upgrade in the same level. Mexico could do the same upgrade applied to Brazilian Tigers. Also, buy some Super Tucanos (at least 24 examples) to provide a good option against drug smugglers.

Like many others here in this forum I prefer the Flanker. But you can imagine the costs to introduce a completely diferente airplane, culture, the costs will be a lot high. FAB budget is very tight, is too much to afford.
The Mirage 2000 is a natural relacement for our Mirages III. We are very used to the Mirage, there are local industries that are specialized in supply spare parts for the fleet, probably the same will be for the Mirage 2000s.
The fighters will be filling the gap until the arrival of the RAFALE (in ten years minimum). Also we didn´t fly the same number of hours as any NATO member, so we can use them for long time. Usually Brazilian fighter pilots fly 120-130 hours per year, lower than NATO standards, but sufficient enough to keep the pilots qualified and maintaning safety.

Regarding the fleet of Navy Skyhawks……….is all about budget. The Navy wants to maintain 15 flyable jets out of the 23 purchased, but, only three or four are airworthy. The Navy wants to upgrade them is the same way as FAB F-5s and AMXs…………but is all about budget.

cb_lima, According to your point of view, the best choice is the Mirage 2000. It is a natural replacement for the Mirage III. Also, in seven/ten years, FAB can go with RAFALE, natural replacement for the Mirage 2000.

It is not useful get the F-16s from Holland or Belgium unless US decides to include one or two tankers on the deal. Also, it will increase in training costs for the pilots to get used to this method of refuelling as well as for the boom operators. And FAB budget is not the largest one available 😡 Let´s see.

    Comments?

    Shadow1,

Tks for the info. A few aircrafts from CVW-11 came down here in Brazil last year, when the ship change port.
Surfing at NAS Lemoore website I found out that the regular CVW that will operate on RR is CVW-14. Interesting fact is that out of four Hornet squadrons, two are E models Super Hornet sqdns (VFA-22 and VFA-115) instead of the regular one F and one E models. I Think the F model squadron is conducting conversion. Which one will be……….I don´t know.

I have one question. If FAB decides for the F-16s, the price for them includes a tanker? FAB pilots and must be train to refuel the F-16 on air as well as tanker crews. FAB uses probe and drogue system to refuel its jets.
    It´s included on the package?

    Regards,
