Rocky, F-8s were at museums or boneyards worldwide. French Crusaders are no longer in service, it was replaced by the Rafale. Will be nice to see A-4s and Rafale sharing São Paulo´s deck. I´m talking about a dream that is unlikely to come true. 🙁

Hammer, you are quite right. Much of the budget goes to salaries and pensions and very few are really allocated for operations and even for getting new equipment. With a good financial planning, we can afford with high tech equipment, a state of the art jet fighter and………………..

“Regarding the Hooters, I didn´t know about that one, thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, the only Brazilian store is 400 km away from me, as Google told me:
    Name & Phone Address
    Hooters of Sao Paulo
    011-55-11-5181-3922 Rua Jose Guerra 111″

I went there. All I can say that the food is regular but the girls are just gorgeous. 🙂

The desire of the Brazilian Government is to belong, permanently, at the UN counsil. For instance, funds do not permit the armed forces to be better equiped in order to participate in large scale UN operations.

Brazilian A-4s A2A weapon is the Sidewinder. The Navy wants to upgrade them much in the same of the current upgrades on the F-5 and AMX fleet which will be interesting, but, right now, there is no budget for. Without budget, the Navy can do nothing. The Hornet is a good option, even the older models, it can be operated from São Paulo´s deck and definitely would increase A2A, A2G capability and if someday funds permitt, it will be nice to see upgraded A-4s and Hornets sharing the deck of the carrier……….interesting carrier wing composition, A-4s, F/A-18s, Sea Kings and Super Pumas.

I mentioned earlier that French Navy made some tests with the Hornet at Foch´s deck (today´s Brazilian Navy carrier São Paulo). I doubt that Brazilian Navy has enough funds to buy and operate the Hornet.

When French Navy was developing the Rafale, they have considered the purchase of some Hornets to replace old Crusaders. Some tests have been made but not went ahead.

According to our budget which is tight, an upgrade of the A-4 fleet is not that bad.

Buying AV-8B plus is another option, it can perform a lot of roles including BVR capabilities. As the carrier will be upgraded, a ski jump could be included in the package.

“To deter an invasion by Surinam ? by Paraguay ? by Sierra Leone?”

Sierra Leone is in Africa ok.

Brazil needs a decent fighter, a high perfomance one, to provide credible Air Defense for our strategic areas. No one knows the day of tomorrow.

I think, get a used one for at least 8-10 years. Dutch or Belgium F-16s MLU is a good option because they can keep a credible Air Defense as well as perform other roles.

In the meantime a new evaluation should be made for a state of the art high performance jet and Rafale can fullfil all FAB needs.

Brazil needs a credible high performance fighter. In my view 24 is enough for our standards. There are rumours for F-16AM/BM from Holland or Belgium, currently in storage, to be used as stop gap. But, Brazilian government is looking ahead and the next five or seven years will go with the RAFALE….definitely :). What we need to know is if US will release AIM-120s as promised and also tankers to support the fleet (we use the probe and drogue system)

Buying Italian AMXs is a good idea. It´s a good aircraft and maybe one or two new squadrons can be formed on the Amazon region. It is a good aircraft to intercept high speed illegal aircrafts faster than A-29.

The original purchase of 8 AMX-T was cancelled. Venezuela is looking for 12 to 24 ALX´s (A-29) and Brazil wants to negotiate a batch of 12 AMX-T as well
    Nothing confirmed yet.

“I think Chavez is a real great president, finally someone who helps the poor people.”

This is the way to start a dictatorship, la Revolucion Bolivariana (Bolivarian Revolution) as said by Mr. Chavez.

“The government thinks we don’t need new fighters, that our aging, and retiring Mirages, are enough. Hell, those ******* ****s don’t give a damn about our armed forces. I’m all for a dictatorship. Democracy hasn’t given us anything.
Still, if ANYONE ever threaten us, we will kick your butt.”

Brazil is a peaceful country, the government has other priorities. Another fighter will be purchased, which one? no one knows for instance, but, we will got one to equip 1o. GDA (First Air Defense Group), even more upgraded F-5s. If you compare to the dictatorship era, our AF is much more capable and equiped.

Democracy gave us hope and the right to express. I know that corruption exists,….since Brazil exists, and corruptors should be punished accordingly as this is our main problem, a cancer that should be removed.

Try to speak with someone that have suffered the consequences, being tortured throughout nights and days. Read the stories about families that lost relatives taken away to never come back, executed by all horrific means, and worst, bodies never recovered to their families for a descent burial.

    Think about that.

Arthur, you are correct. At the time of the Falklands conflict, only five Sues were delivered as well as the same number of Exocet missiles. Argentine Navy received a total of thirteen Sues but remaind with 11 in the inventory. I don´t know how many are in operational status.

In relation with the Pucará, if I´m not wrong, it is operated by third fighter group (Grupo 3 de Caza).

    Phantom II,

USS Ronald Reagan made, last year (between June and September if I´m not wrong), a change of Port and during this short cruise, from Atlantic to Pacific, RR participated in exercise Summer Pulse and have exercised with Brazilian Navy (A-4 Skyhawk), the Argies, Uruguay and Chilean navies as well as Peruvian AF. Both Brazilian Skyhawks and Argies Sues have made some touch and goes through RR´s deck.

Currently, Armada Argentina (Argies Navy) operated up to 11 Super Etendards, none of them have been upgraded yet. The main weapons for the Sues is the Magic II for A2A, Exocet for anti ship role as well as GP bombs
