Very good looking jet. From this view the camo is similar to the ones applied to the Mirage Pantera fleet.

    “The Rafale!
Oh my God!…what a piece of technology and art!
Wonderful and modern aircraft (although rather expensive too!), A-29. That would be a great choice and those birds would look terrific in Brazilian markings, so much is sure! .

Anyway…please keep us well informed about the process A-29.

    Saludos”

My friend Condor, there is a lot of rumours in the government for the purchase of the Rafale. We are very used to the Mirage family, some FAB pilots have tested and also flew M2000s so it is not a big deal move on to the Rafale. According to press, the deal will be made in 2007 for deliveries in 2010. Until the deliveries we have two options……..use a squadron of uograded F-5s or make a lease of a used fighter to fullfil the gap. I go with the second one. We can make, like Italy did, a lease of some F-16ADF Vipers, from ANG inventory, for five to seven years until the first delivery of the Rafale.
    What do you think?

“Beautiful planes…but so expensive to mantain…”

Yes, Condor……….we are facing the same problems here with our Mirages. The fleet will be retired at the end of this year and a lot of rumours involving a stop gap purchase until a decision for a brand new. Some sources say that after the cancellation of the FX program, there are good chances for the RAFALE. Let´s see.

BTW the camo applied to Chilean Vipers is really cool

“Quite right A-29… that’s the truth and nothing but the truth

    (a minor correction, it’s 10 new planes…not 12)”

    Condor,

Tks for correcting me. I thought that was 12……….anyway in near future Fach will have more F-16s.

Nice jet indeed. Great camo. Hope to see in service soon.

“10 aircraft is a joke. They should have gone the way the Portuguese did. A decent number of used Blk 15 and look to the Israelis, Belgians or anyone else to modify them and arm them.”

In fact is 12 jets (08 single seaters and 04 two seaters) and for a country of the size of Chile and looking at a scenario for SA, is enough.

Currently there are negotiations for the purchase of upgraded F-16s to replace the current fleet of Fach Mirages.

I think the jets are in the same standard of the ones recently delivered for the Greek AF.

    Saludos

“Pitty they aren’t doing it for real Can you imagine a Tomcat in the Brazilian two-tone grey/green camo? Coolness abound.”

    Trident,

Yes…………it would be really nice to see it in that camo.

    Cheers

    Hi Transall,

According to what I read on AFM issue from January, 6 sqn will be based at leuchars. I suppose that Leuchars will have three squadron of typhoons in the future (43 and 111 sqns will be reformed there as well. I guess).

Coningsby will house 29(R) sqn as well as 3 sqn and Leeming will have Typhoons with 11 and 25 sqns.

If 3 sqn will retire its Harriers to introduce the Typhoon, the Harrier will concentrate only with 1 and 4 sqns plus the Reserve 20 sqn?

Is just a hunch as I´m too far away 🙂

3 sqn will be the first operational Typhoon squadron at Coningsby. The second will be 11 sqn at leeming and the third operational Typhoon squadron will be 6 sqn to be formed at RAF Leuchars.

If I´m not wrong, they will become operational from 2007.

If you are interested, there is another book named Mirage – The Combat Log from Salvador Mafé Huertas. It is a great book, tell the histories of every nation that have used the Mirage in Combat. Detailed histories from Israeli/Arab wars, Falklands, Iraq, South Africa. Really worth a read.

According to Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, the government is considering the purchase of the RAFALE via Embraer, this time without any bidding.
Some leased aircraft is under consideration as the deliveries of the RAFALE will start in 2010.

If FAB will get the RAFALE, we should try to buy more F-5s, upgrade them in order to equip the first air defense group, the unit that will be equiped with RAFALE. After the introduction of the RAFALE, a new fighter squadron could be formed.

“The Rafale is better to be sure, but if the French F-8s have not been cut into scrap, then they would cost next to nothing to put back onto the same deck that they flew from for decades. I believe that they had many upgrades, and are much better aircraft than the old USN Crusaders.”

French Crusaders have received a lot of upgrades, but, today is impossible to operate such aircraft. The costs to maintain it are enormous and a step back in terms of technology even if you consider the upgrades received. Not to mention the tigh budget imposed to Brazilian Navy.

    Regards,
