I last operated out of Sumburgh 4+ years ago. There’s a number of wartime installations in and around the airfield. It’s also worth a walk up the hill opposite with the radio mast – cracking views plus a huge puffin colony. Interesting little viking settlement nearby too.
If anyone is interested i recently acquired a detailed list of crashes and sites around Shetland. Unfortunately I don’t know who the author is – it was discarded in the crew room at work. It would appear to be late 1980’s vintage and is about 20-25 pages of A4. Would willingly share any info of use.
Is that a rat or a fish I smell?
Tis the same picture even down to the identical loose thread, bottom left of pilot’s brevet.
Not convinced the epaulettes belong to the jacket either – alot cleaner and brighter than the rest of it.
In order:
Cessna 150, Chipmunks (several), PA28 Warrior; PA34 Seneca III/IV; AS202 Bravo; BAe ATP; Cessna 172; BAe Jetstream 41; Embraer 145; Tiger Moth; DHC Dash 8-300.
Most Fun – Chipmunk
Best handling – J41
Most want to fly again – Tiger Moth
Most want to fly ever – Spitfire (surprise, surprise!).
Least enjoyable – any Cessna!
Mr Tweed/JDK or whatever your name is, I take it you forgot who you were pontificating at….
At no time did I say “”It’s unforgiveable, I lost my temper”, That’ll be Skypilot62/mad manx who uttered the words….
Everything I said in my post stands 😀
JDK, Ewan is almost right. I did use the words in my post but in parentheses which indicates it was a quote. Check the pre title sequence from a well known war film with lots of Buchon 109’s and Spitfires & Hurricanes set in the summer of 1940 and you’ll know where I pinched it from. Apologies to Ewan for any inadvertent flak.
JDK, perhaps a little calm and rereading yourself? I was not deliberately being offensive, hence the liberal use of the cheesy icons 😎 :p 😉 😀 😮 😡 😮 🙂 , perhaps it is my slightly warped humour which does not transcend so well via a keyboard that’s the problem. In my own little way I was trying to highlight the very pettiness you’ve pointed out (more eloquently than I did), but in a light hearted way (hence the childish mannerisms!). No offence intended, and I apologise to one and all if anyone mistook my writings seriously!
The only serious point was about approaching people politely for pictures and my gratitude to those who helped me a few weeks ago. I shall measure my words more carefully before tipeing on a kaybored. 😀 (English humour!)
I shall now go to bed having been suitably chastened. I am obviously spending a little too much time in a rarefied atmosphere! 😀
Can anyone tell me if AH nos are only used on military wheels? Still no luck on the large tail wheel then?
Maybe I’m being a bit padantic here, but what was the point in going – to get some good pictures or to appreciate the aircraft, a superb flying display and all that they entail???
Want some good pictures? Ask TFC/OFMC/IWM et al nicely in advance (as my father and I did), you’ll be met at the Guardroom, given a free pass, a stepladder ( 😡 😉 ) and free reign to cross the hanger barriers and to snap away till your little heart’s content. No annoying “Drama Queens”, visitors or other humans to interact with and spoil your glorious photo moment. We were even lent a ruler for scale, having forgotten our own! This I did several months ago and was treated with the utmost cooperation and generosity – a polite question and civillity will go a long way. To those in the know, many thanks for the help.
To the gits with the ladders, etc. at airshows and the whingy attititude – BOG OFF! 😡 Meanwhile, back on planet earth the rest of the human race will be perfectly tolerant and accepting of one other’s foilbles (not a nasty skin condition!) exude great patience and forebearance with one another and solve the world peace issue (well, we can dream!)
“It’s unforgiveable, I lost my temper” 😎
Re: Drama Queens.
This makes my blood boil. 😡 I know Steve admits it may have been an ill-advised choice of words, but there are people who truly do think that way. Why is it that certain people (not all) who take aircraft pictures aka spotters, aka anoraks, feel it is perfectly okay to be anal about their hobby without being tolerant of anyone else’s? I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of Legends attendees thought it was a great touch. Besides which, they were asked to be there.
Often it’s the same sort of people who are so up themselves that to wave back to a passing aircraft taxiing past a viewing area would somehow be considered “uncool” to their hobby, but find nothing wrong in sitting in the rain at 6.30am with their long lenses, thermos, parka and satchel. How “cool” is that? I am not critiscising such behaviour either – I think it’s great that people have a hobby they can be dedicated to. I’m just trying to highlight the eccentricities of every hobby which to an outsider may seem odd or even bizarre, watching football included! This is not aimed at Steve, more the ingnoramuses with the stools, ladders, cranes etc. who don’t stand discreetly at the back but plonk themselves right at the front with absolutely no consideration for anyone else. Padlocking a ladder to a fence – ridiculous! Perhaps a seperate day for true photograph enthusiasts (higher entrance fee)to come with all their gear, and then ban such kit from the “public” days? Don’t think it would work though. Unfortunately I can’t take my real ladder – it left home when I was small. I’ve only got a step-ladder 😉
I am neither a “drama queen” nor an anorak (more a “greatcoat” – WW2 equivalent!) but I am an enthusiast. Stamp collecting would bore me rigid so I don’t do it, but I wouldn’t slag someone else off who does.
Would your life be so ruined by such “set dressing”? Of course, we all like to get great pictures, but come on, live and let live eh?
Now, all hold hands and time for a quick rendition of “I’d like to teach the world to sing….” 😉 :p 😀
Column included but no yoke. We arranged for a specially built container, shown in the top pictures, and had it shipped over via sea freight. Cost around £2000.
Colin, not wishing to doubt but can you tell me what makes it uniquely Hurricane?
Walrus is a possibility, but it was found inland. Not impossible of course. We did have an ASR Walrus at Andreas.
Aha! Thanks for that. Seems to fit with the construction method.
Thanks Melv. Thought I’d try here first as it’s cheaper, easier, and above all friendlier! I hadn’t heard of Barnstormers – thanks for the heads up. I may or may not try the mags – had a very mixed response in the past.
Thanks for that. I’ll see if I can extract an AH number. As I said, corrosion from the sea air made it quite difficlut to see any markings and I had a limited amount of time. Any ideas on that last large tailwheel?
I’ve still got a Tiger Moth item we discussed. PM your address and I’ll send it to you.
Forgot to post these pics. Plus it bumps the thread! These bits were part of the package deal.
Next, another much larger (18″ diameter) tailwheel and tyre. Again type uncertain.
Thanks in advance one and all.
