Could it possibly be for training (Navs in particular) aircrew whilst simulating instrument flying? We used to use removable plastic screens to cover the view outside, but our aircraft carry passengers the rest of the time. Perhaps a dedicated training aircraft had the viewing window permanently covered?

I was at BAe Flying College 97-99 and the J41 cockpit was still there when I left in July 99, as you say, completely kitted out. I too tried to obtain it for our museum in the Isle of Man and was given the “simulator conversion” line by BAe officials. As the college closed at the end of 99, I have no idea what happened to it after that. There was also an ATP cockpit section there too, but it was totally stripped out, plus some old u/c oleos just lying arond in the grass verges – don’t know what from.

Having subsequently flown the J41 and just about to convert back on to it with another airline, I have a fond affection for the aircraft. Truly the most fun commercial aircraft I’ve flown (we referred to the J41 fleet as “Fighter Command”!)

It’s a modern (post WW2) commercial jacket loosely based on the WW2 type jackets.

Thanks for nothing – do you enjoy making grown men cry? :p

I try regularly at the local tip to see if anything turns up and the lads are very helpful but to date – nothing at all in 3.5 years! My best success at the council dump was 5 years ago in the Isle of Man when I turned up 150+ gas mask respirator bags of all types and ARP satchels. I went with two bags of rubbish and came back with 3! My wife just buried her face and slowly shook her head – she honestly could not understand why I brought more back from the tip than I took.

One day I WILL repeat that success (maybe!).

Well I never! I certainly remember reading the book as a wee young lad and then finding out that there had indeed been a KG200. So my uncles memory was spot on then – excellent stuff, thanks Mike!

Sadly that’s the only photo he’s got apart from one of him sat on a blinkin big German bomb awaiting collection.

Tony, Tiger Moth trips are very easily arranged – check out your local Boots, WH Smith or lastminute.com

My wife got my trip from boots – around £150 for half an hor in a Tiger Moth at an airfield of my choosing. Worth every penny too!

I started this thread a while back – it’s my picture that I took in 1998 whilst flying there. I have other of the airfield but only this one of the dump. Feel free to use it. West Freugh was also known as Luce Bay.

Isn’t the last one a picture of Yamamoto’s shot down a/c (Betty?)? IIRC there’s a similar picture in an edition of After The Battle.

We had a stash of Bristol Hercules and Mercury cowl gill rings which came out of the old scrapyard at Chippenham in the 90’s, just before they turned it into a Sainsbury’s. Apparently the boss had been given a tip off that there might be something there, rocked up one day with a metal detector and a shovel, got told to ‘feel free to have a dig around over there mate’, got a trace, scraped away a few inches of topsoil, and voila! After stripping them down, cleaning them, inspecting them, and refurishing the ones which would go again, we got two Herc’s worth of usable cowl gill assemblies out of that lot. Just goes to show what’s still out there if you’re willing to go and look. 🙂

Had a similar experience in the Isle of man and our group recovered a complete Barracuda seat and a fair few pieces of Rapide, as well as a few practice bombs which caused some fun for the EOD boys. I firmly believe that there are airframes still around (worldwide) but finding and recovering them is becoming so much harder and more expensive.

Does anyone know of a scrappy near Blackwater/Blackbushe area (not Blackbushe Metals)? He had a Merlin and quite a few other bits in the late 80’s but I didn’t pay too much attention at the time. No doubt he knew of Doug Arnold but I don’t think they were connected at all.

I for one love this thread more than any other. It keeps the quest for the “Holy Grail” alive. My thanks to Mark12 and others who have shared so much treasure thus far.

Being greedy I know but “Please sir, can we have some more….”

I never knew Clint did comedy. I shall view it differently now.

Every Which Way But loose (“Right Turn Clyde!”)
    Any Which Way You Can
    City Heat (with Burt Reynolds)
    etc.

Admittedly not as funny as intended but a few laughs nonetheless.

    Kelly’s Heroes best bits:

Oddball describing why he has paint shells “‘cos they explode in beautiful colours”

The end sequence when Clint, T. Sevalas & Oddball (Donald Sutherland) all walk down the street towards the Tiger Tank a la Spaghetti Western style and Oddball flicks open the top of his .45 holster, flexes his trigger fingers and gives a sly look at Clint – superb!

Interesting how Donald Sutherland was also the lead (Hawkeye) in M*A*S*H The Movie.

And I too love Where Eagles Dare purely for the “Boys Own” ripping yarn, Saturday Matinee’ feel (like Raiders Of TLA etc.). I highly recommend the extras on the new DVD version.

I’ve been, albeit a few years ago and I thought it was superb although a bit “chaotic”. I dare say it’s more organised now. Loads of recovered items – engines, turrets etc. plus a few airframes/cockpit sections. I’ll dig out some pics if you’re interested.
