Clam down chaps it’s just a commercial….errm, I mean a wind-up. The high bidder who seems determined to have his 15 seconds (not minutes) of fame has a user name involving one of Vauxhall’s lesser products and has only previous bought a pair of second-hand jeans and a denim skirt. I doubt that he’s serious or even knew what a Vulcan was until he read about it in “The Scum” – probably though it was something to do with Star Trek.

Now I really would laugh if he wins and the buyer comes after him for the cash!

I think you’ll find that there’ll be alot of bid retractions just before the 24 hour limit and/or the seller will lock out bidders. It happened with the wedding invite that was “auctioned” last week (best laugh for ages that was!).

What did happen to the two JP’s? I must admit I was tempted but as always, storing such an exhibit is the problem.

(Not to mention the explaining I’d have to do with Mrs. Skypilot – “Errrm, I got them from a bloke at work dear. We don’t fly them anymore so they were giving them away, you know like the “Bargain Bin” at Asda? Oww, what was that for? etc. 😀 )

Regarding the Vulcan, is the nose section even salvageable? From what has been said if it’s been open to the elements perhaps even that is a non-starter. As I said elsewhwere, why can’t the lucky souls who own these magnificent aircraft make these decisions before it’s too late. It’s criminal! There’d be public outrage if Buck House or Windsor castle fell down from disrepair. Isn’t this just as much a part of our heritage. Didn’t we used to be GREAT Britain? And did these feet in ancient times….. etc. 😡 😀

Cue: Stirring strains of “Land of Hope & Glory” accompanied by speeches from Churchill etc. 😀

I have had a look at the site that you mentioned. This deals only with the Order of the Virtuti Militari. The Polish Cross of Valour is a couple of rungs down the order of precedence from this award. Equating, I think, to a DSC/DFC on the British scale.

I do not have the medal although I do have a scanned photo of it. It appears to be a 1920 issue of the Cross, with the ribbon colours reversed. This, I believe was to distinguish those awards made to Polish exile forces during WWII.

The site only deals with the VM but the chap himself is expert on all things Polish medal-wise. He was able to confirm some CV medals I have in my collection and ID a couple of others. He has/had another site listing around 4-5 pages of medals and badges for sale, all Polish but I cannot find the URL for it. As I say, a phone-call is probably gonna be best.

25,000 CV’s were awarded by the Polish Government in exile, & 30,000 in total. Have a look at this link from within his site.

Just for info, mine is the Virtuti Militari group that he mentions that “only” cost $250, being worth $1500+ for the VM alone – and it’s an RAF/PAF group at that with CV and 3 (!!!) bars plus Air Crew Europe etc. A lucky day at the antique shop!

It is indeed mentioned in “Spirit of the Blue”. I won’t type it all out but just mention the salient points.

It occurred at approx. 1930 hrs, weather good, 14/08/40.

Peter Ayerst, Hallings-Pott (sp?) & McLean all heard explosions and saw an (only one) aircraft “5 miles away”. The bombs were being dropped on the training school at RAF Sealand. All 3 scrambled (the aircraft were just being put away for the day).

Heinkel He111 was spotted at 2000′ over Sealand, about to start a second run. Hollings-Pott & Mclean attacked and scored minor hits. Peter attacked and must have hit engines as it rapidly lost height. Other 2 Spits returned home, Peter stayed with Heinkel to watch it crash land. It was witnessed by 16 year-old Syd Lawrence (the band-leader). The aircraft shot past the bottom of Salisbury Street, Shotton at about 9pm, no more than 20′ above the ground pursued by Peter’s spit. Heinkel flew under some pylons, nice wheels up landing and stopped 50yds short of a farmhouse. The 4 crew were made POW’s but had planted detonators which blew up and only the tail and half of the fuselage remained. The next day the 3 Spit pilots and others travelled the 5 miles to view the wreck.

German crew – Fw. Heinrich Rodder (Nav.); Oblt. Artur Wiesemann (pilot); Uffz. Walter Schaum (Flt. Mech.); Uffz. Heinz Kochy (Radio Op.)

All 4 Germans met up with Peter Ayerst in 1988 and the Germans also gave their side of events, confirming the above – target was RAF Sealand, damaged caused to Guardroom, Sgts. Mess; and Airmen’s block. Were part of 3 aircraft formation, other 2 shot down over Devon. They said they didn’t see the Spitfire’s from Hawarden coming – they thought the shadow on the cloud was their own aircraft – D’OH!

From BoB; Then & Now:

“8/KG27 Heinkel He IIIP (2624). Failed to return from reconnaissance sortie NE of Exeter and engagement with fighters. Crashed on Border House Farm near Chester. (lists crew – also has 5th crew member Uffz. Ullman (POW)). Aircraft 1G+FS a write-off.

Site excavated by the Warplane Wreck Investgation Group and some charred and shattered components from the straboard engine unearthed. Some relics subsequently presented to the surviving pilot who was contacted in Hagen, W. Germany”

Interesting to see how Blitz T & N and BoB T & N accounts vary slightly.

I would imagine this could be confirmed easily elsewhere too.
