If you have the service number I can do a check for you which may give some clues, approx service dates etc. Also, try his surname in the London Gazette archive on line:

    http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveSearch.asp?WebType=0

The search isn’t the easiest to use but just try the surname initially. Of course, if he is Canadian, his promotions may not show up.

    Happy hunting.

I am just thinking how lucky they are to be able to have the chance to be oblivious to the two minutes silence after all if it was not for the men and women who gave everything that moment would not exist now,We must never forget EVER.

Unbelievably, there’s a phone-in on the radio discussing the idea put forward by someone official (didn’t catch who) suggesting that after next year’s 60th anniversary of the end of WW2, that we will have done “enough” remembering and we should switch our focus to perhaps using the occasion to remember those in the civil service who have died in the course of duty – e.g. firemen, police officers etc. They of course deserve remembering, probably at a greater level than they currently are, but to suggest we have ever done “ENOUGH” remembering with regards to our service dead fills me with disgust. Just another example of the PC/woolly liberals/moral “do-gooders” atempting to ensure we water down anything remotely worth caring about or believing in. Perhaps this same individual would like to personally write to the surving family members and comrades of these deceased WW1 & 2 veterans and tell them we’ve finished with their sacrifice, on your way, nothing to see here? 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

We have a moral-bound obligation to remember these people. No earthly force or government can release us from it by saying “enough”.

“They grow not old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”

My dad had a T & S gauge mounted on the front of his motorbike in the 60’s – so there’s one accounted for 🙂

682al – did you see the instrument manual on ebay a couple of days ago? Not sure if it was an AP1275 or not but it got bid on heavily so I left well clear. 🙁

To be fair chaps, David has never particularly referred to it as an aerojumble in the sense you mean – it always was more a collectors fair aimed at a broad cross-section of collectors. Bear in mind that David has always dealt in flying gear, not aircraft parts. To be objective, when I’ve gone in the past I’ve sometimes felt that there were too many aircraft parts sellers (although I still rue the day that I didn’t buy the Mosquito tail unit which was around £50 IIRC)- so I guess it depends on what you’re expecting. 🙂

Whilst on the topic, what event do you chaps rate as the top “aerojumble”?

just had my email “return to sender – undeliverable” so I presume the “extra” pilots vacancies have been filled – 🙁 Oh well, wouldn’t really have wanted to fly in a dirty old aeroplane anyway – no cabin crew for a start!

Dean – try the UK Info disc. Your library may have a copy. It has electoral and telephone details for the UK. I also suggest an sae with mail outs. I found a distant (and unknown about) relative of mine and the brother of a 609 casualty in this way.

Good luck, and keep your noise to the ground!

    Mark

Mark, nose or noise? Either way it’s probably apropriate! 🙂

Does the info disc provide any more info than the 192.com facility? That’s how I found the Benjamin H Lee that I wrote to – the only Ben Lee in an apropriate location in the UK according to their electoral role search, although that was 2003.

    A further update…..

Just to update on Ben Lee. I posted a letter as I mentioned but to date have had no reply whatsoever. It would appear the trail has gone cold again, but when I think about what I started out with, I can’t really complain! Once more may I thank you all for your input, all of which has been valuable and most welcome. If nothing else, at least we’ve ensured that one more of those to whom we owe so much is not forgotten.

    Dean

Well, I got a phone call from Benjamin H Lee this afternoon in response to my letter sent in October. That’s the good news.

The bad news its not the right Benjamin H Lee! It was quite a young chap who called and he’d only received the letter a couple of days ago due to a postal delay. He kindly phoned to “rule himself out” as it were which was most decent of him. I think I may have to resign myself to the fact that Ben Lee is no longer with us.

That said, I’m not giving up on the story though and will now pursue some of the leads you guys have been kind enough to point out to me.

    The quest continues…..

My apologies if this has been mentioned before, but I’ve not been around here much of late. (Busy with family history research!)

    Anyway, this could be good…

    Great thread Skypilot!

It all depends on your interests in aviation. I am interested in the Battle of Britain, general WW2 and early jets….wide spectrum. My most thumbed books covering WW2 and cockpits are:

Men of the Battle of Britain
BoB Then & Now by After the Battle
Blitz Then & Now Vol 1,2,3 by ATB
Every set of original & repro Pilots Notes I can get (60+ now)
The trilogy of excellent aircraft interior books by Nijboer/Patterson (Cockpit of WW2, Cockpits of Cold War and Gunner).
The superb book on German interiors (released in UK by Monogram, now no longer available except in German…still excellent)
    Spitfire the history
    Wrecks & Relics
UK Military serials from 1908…..to present
    Assorted Squadron histories.

    etc etc!

Thanks for that. But no Etc. Etc…I want to know! 😀

    Anything published by Putnams.
A number of you would have guessed this already. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thanks for that Andy. I always wondered whether they were worth the money. My background is collecting flying gear and only recently have I taken a more in depth look at the actual aircraft, hence why some of the “obvious” choices to forum members may have been overlooked by myself who is a bit of a novice in this area (which you may have guessed from my inane constant questions!) 😀 Fortunately you have all been very patient with me!

Now, want to know about the differences between 1st and 2nd pattern C-type helmets, I’m your man! Hence why when watching the Battle of Britain I’m constantly getting scowls from the other (better) half as I tutt and sigh every time I see yet another FAA C-type helmet, MkVII goggles and 1950’s orange “Frankensteins” Mae-West.

I think you’ll find that there’ll be alot of bid retractions just before the 24 hour limit and/or the seller will lock out bidders. It happened with the wedding invite that was “auctioned” last week (best laugh for ages that was!).

I think you’ll find “I told you so” appropriate at this point! (Smug Git!) 🙂
