Difficult one as you’ve tried the obvious places that have always supplied me with what I’ve needed.

You may want to give the chap below an e-mail or phone call. I’m not sure how up to date the info is though as I’ve had problems getting hold of him recently via the web. Perhaps a telephone call will be best?

Depending on when the cross was awarded, early ones were numbered (IIRC) so if you have the medals that may help, if you don’t, well obviously no help!

Good luck – let us know how you get on with the good Dr. above.

Hi Dean, can you let me know how you got hold of Judy please? ie what number / email? It’s quite important. Many thanks,

    mark

Most certainly. I’d intended posting the numbers but forgort!

    Judy’s number (Irvin Caterpillar Club Enquiries) – 01462 480433

    GQ Gold Club archives – 01656 727000

Hope this helps – any chance you could let us know the outcome?

Just to update on Ben Lee. I posted a letter as I mentioned but to date have had no reply whatsoever. It would appear the trail has gone cold again, but when I think about what I started out with, I can’t really complain! Once more may I thank you all for your input, all of which has been valuable and most welcome. If nothing else, at least we’ve ensured that one more of those to whom we owe so much is not forgotten.

    Your PM’s are full Phil!

If the below is of interest give me a shout, or anyone else for that matter.

I have a NOS T6 tailwheel tyre (at least that’s what the forum guys tell me it is!) and it’s in excellent unused condition – I would say quite likely airworthy. If it’s of any use to you all I would like in return would be any suitable instruments for a MkV/IX Spit panel – non-airworthy is fine, and in fact preferable.

I have pics if you want them.

    Regards, Dean

Ok, Ok maybe me (and Steve!) are the last to hear about the knock-down price but better late than never – eh Steve?

Perhaps we should make more postings like this if we see bargains so we can all benefit (once we’ve got a copy for ourselves tucked away first of course!) ? 🙂

An aircraft built using large quantities of magnesium and also used for fire practice! It isn’t going to be pristine by any stretch of the imagination!

Usually “Fire Practice” does not necessarily mean setting fire to it. Often it’s for the fire service to practice their angle grinders for “rescuing” trapped aircrew etc.

Not an RFC service number, as said, probably Hants regt. New one would be issued on re-mustering in RFC.

What service numbers and regt are on his medals? 14-15 star will probably be Hants Regt. but the BWM and Victory will probably be RAF numbered. With that info you can soon track down the rest from MIC at PRO etc. (as long as his records weren’t destroyed in the Blitz)

Hendon have been selling it for the same price for a while I believe.

Mind you, like all books it does contain errors, I have been told that one or two of the photos are not of the right person, and John Lansdell is given as ‘Landsdell’ throuout his entry.

Never the less it is an invaluable reference book, but do cross check the info with other sources if you can.

    Geoff.

Absolutely right, but nonetheless, probably the best of it’s type (so far!)

    Thanks Skypilot,

Here’s a couple of photos of some of 488 (NZ) Sqn’s men together again more than fifty years later. Ron, as always, is the bald one. 🙂

    No probs!

Ermmm…aren’t most of them bald! 😀

Long may they continue to enjoy the peace they gave so much for. Gentlemen, I salute you.

Some of you may know that I’m a comedian so I have few promo shots. I don’t know if this will work, but here are a couple of them.

Absolutely brilliant – that’s the funniest hairdo I’ve seen in ages! 😀

    Another bunch.

Photo 5 – in this portrait of Ron, he’s wearing a ribbon. According to what I’ve found out he was Mentioned in Despatches twice, but i don’t have him being rewarded any specific medals for valour. Does anyone know what this medal is? Did MiD winners get a ribbon?

    Not bad huh?

The ribbon is of the 1939-45 star although for it to be worn during the war it was still being referred to as the 1939-43 star – the dates changed towards the end of the war. This and the Africa star are the only WW2 campaign ribbons that were authorised during the war, the remainder were authorised after WW2. A Mention In Despatches is denoted by a single bronze okleaf which would be sewn directly to the tunic. Only one oakleaf was worn, regardless of how many “MiD”‘s awarded. A certificate is awarded with each “MiD” though.

“Not Bad Huh?” – this must go down as one of the years understatements!

Had a chance to read Ron Watts’ full story on your website too. What a guy!

Swordfish with white fuselage and D-Day stripes…

Only pics I’ve found at a glance were of 816 Sqn, code letters S and Q, in both ‘The Swordfish Story’ (by one Ray Sturtivant 😀 ) and ‘Fairey Swordfish and Albacore’ WA Harrison, Crowood. The cover pic on Ray’s book is of these a/c. Interestingly they do have the machine gun in the rear position, but also have rocket rails underwing.

It’s actually a v. interesting pic you’ve shown us there!

    Cheers

The joys of aviation in the Isle of Man is/was a very rich tapestry of aircraft passing through. If anyone ever fancies popping over……(cheap tax too!) 🙂

I post this, as I think it is something I must do.

Just 5 minutes ago I watched a program called “Spitefire Ace” on Discovery wings. As the title suggests it charted the memories or Spitfire pilots. (Who all deserve to be called Aces, regardless if they live through the war or got shot down on their first sortie)

The end of the show had a WWII veteran take flight in a 2 seater Spitfire and once airborne he took the controls and executed some of the best victory rolls and loops I have seen. With sombre music in the background and that Merlin engine giving of its distinctive sound… I found a tear rolling down my cheek.

God bless the few who defended the many.

Sorry mate, very old news – was shown on C4 at the beginning of the year and has been running on Discovery on and off since then. A superb program though.
