I think John Travolta also owned a Constellation once but it did not get airworthy and i remember it can be seen in the background in a film (con air maybe?) as the director mentions it in the commentary.

Can’t find any referances for it at the moment, but going by memory I’ve read that Travolta did fly the aircraft as co-pilot on an intended ferry flight across the states. He was trying to get it to a restoration shop on the other side of the country, but two engines had to be shut down and they had to make an emergency landing at the nearest airport (Ryan field, Tucson, Arizona), where the aircraft then sat until Vern Raburn came along several years later.

Edited to add: I should perhaps have mentioned that the Connie in question was N949TW, what became the MATS Connie and now sadly static in South Korea.

Can anyone confirm that Mark Knopfler at one time owned Spitfire Mk.XVI TE184? I’ve heard it mentioned that he was the true owner of the aircraft while it was officially registered to Alain de Cadenet.

It’s worth mentioning that the ‘door’ on the starboard side wasn’t really a door at all, but was in fact a panel that could be jettisoned in an emergency (particularly important if the aircraft came to rest inverted).

As far as I’m aware, all the existing FRS.1 airframes were converted to FA.2, those that were never converted had already been lost in action or accident. The FAAM composite FRS.1 was created by grafting the nose of XZ493 onto a GR.3 airframe. ‘493 ditched in the Adriatic in 1994, and the nose was removed from the recovered wreckage.

Don’t give anybody ideas, that Comet 1 at Cosford has only just got a roof over its head after decades of outdoor display. I can’t think of anywhere else it might go where it would get the same treatment. That said, I’m all for a Nimrod joining the RAFM collection. So many large aircraft to preserve, so little indoor space to preserve them in…

Many thanks for the info Roobarb, I’m glad to hear the scheme will be staying put after all your hard work- ausgezeichnet! (or should that be ‘excelente’??:)) I must admit I prefer the look of the yellow-nosers to the reds, so I’m especially grateful that you and the other researchers went to the trouble of discovering a yellow identity for her.

As others have said, it looks wonderful and I can’t wait to see it in person. Just out of curiosity, is this a long-term paint job or something applied for the BofB 70th anniversary year? Any chance of the second ‘Area 51’ Buchon (the one that still has it’s BofB movie mods) being painted up to make a pair?? Pretty please??

It looks a bit of a tight fit so I’m guessing that the original pilots were a little smaller 😀

A couple of restored Zero’s, and I think this is one of them, have been restored with the seat mounted a frame further back than originally intended so as to give extra leg room for the larger pilot. It looks as though the extra space comes in handy!

Well done to the organisers at WoW for bagging such a beauty for the show- perhaps she can be sneaked into a container marked ‘Duxford’ in time for July?? 😀

Terrible news, my condolences go out to the families and friends of those lost. 🙁

Is it really necessary to have such a graphic picture in the item? Pretty distasteful if you ask me. 🙁

    My point exactly…
I know the details differ but a complete (if incorrect in details that would go unnoticed by 95% of the public) early Comet would be a nice thing to have.

I agree it would be a nice thing to have, but I also can’t help thinking that for a similar amount of effort you could save the C.2 in it’s entirety. It would be interesting to have some expert opinion on how the two projects would compare in this respect.

Edited to say I agree with Zebedee!

Ps. I think one of the reasons why the scrapping of the C.2 is being talked about is because of corrosion in the wing centre section, which is the bit the ‘conversionists’ would have to save anyway.

I think again the wings wouldn’t quite match, the C.2 had RR Avons whereas the 1’s had the Dh Ghosts. This meant a wing root re-design, and although the C.2 wings might just fit a C.1 fuselage, I think it would still be noticeable.

In addition, the Lyneham Comet is the very last C.2 anywhere, and it would be a shame to see it broken up. 🙁

I think I’m right in saying the Nimrod had wings closer to the Comet 4, which in turn were an almost complete redesign and wouldn’t match up with a Comet 1 or 2 fuselage. There’s others on here far more knowledgeable than I who’ll be able to confirm or deny this…

Thanks Ed, it might be that she’s not mentioned in the Franks book becuase he wasn’t counting Dodge trips.

Good luck with the search for a picture, I’m afraid I’ve drawn a blank.

Just been thumbing through Franks’ “Ton-Up Lancs” and there’s no reference to ND452, are you sure it was a centurion/centenarian? The closest centenarian I can find is ND458 HW-A, ‘Able Mabel’ of 100sqn.

    Hello Julie,

I’m sorry to hear of the passing of your father, as others have said he seems to have been quite a character and a man with a great career to his name.

You might find the following link of interest, it’s a great site that gives details of all the surviving Victors including both complete aircraft and cockpit sections/simulators.

I hope it’s of some interest and use. 🙂
