    German Typhoon intercept Boeing 777 VT-JEX from Mumbai

    Jet Airways Boeing 777-300, registration VT-JEX performing flight 9W-118 from Mumbai “India” to “UK” London Heathrow, was enroute at FL360 about 20nm north of Cologne “Germany” when the aircraft was intercepted by two fighter aircraft due to loss of communication.
    The crew did not respond to any calls on assigned ATC frequencies and the emergency frequency.

    flight crew of 9W 118 has been de-rostered pending investigation.

    Team Spartan* challenges Canadian FWSAR award

    “Team Spartan’s main allegation is that the selected airplane is unfit to safely perform certain key search and rescue tasks and missions required by Canada and should have been, therefore, disqualified,” the release states. “Based on the above, Team Spartan has applied to the Federal Court for an order requesting that Canada cancel the contract with Airbus and award same to Leonardo.”

    It seems Leonardo is on the offensive today.

    Leonardo sets sight on M346-FA

    [From the FT configuration], M-346 FA will add Leonardo’s Grifo-346 radar, a more comprehensive electronic warfare suite including radar warning receivers, chaff and flare dispensers and an optional missile approach warning system. The Grifo-346 will gain an active electronically scanned array antenna at a later stage.

    And

    Leonardo is also expected to offer an enhanced radar cross section reduction kit as part of this process.

    French Patrouille de France‘s 2nd tour in the US will commemorate the 100th anniversary of US entrance in WWI

    A first step will be taking part in a New York parade, he said, where the Statue of Liberty, which was a gift from France, is located. Other events include flying March 25-27 over Washington, D.C., the Pentagon, and beside the White House. Wounded French personnel will attend the shows and take part in sports events with their U.S. counterparts.

    During the tour, the French patrol will fly with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels at Pensacola, Florida, fly with the U.S. Army Air Force Thunderbirds at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and visit the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. The latter is a well-known site for French pilots who have trained there. The patrol will also fly over the Grand Canyon and Golden Gate bridge.

    A flight is planned to Norfolk, Virginia, to take part in the Norfolk NATO Festival, as Gen. Mercier, NATO supreme allied commander transformation, had invited the patrol. Mercier is a former French air chief of staff.

    Discussions are being held for a flight to the Airbus factory in Mobile, Alabama.

    The French team will fly at two meetings in Ottawa and Montreal in Canada before heading back across the Atlantic.

    Still there is a weight barrier with UAV and light rotorcraft: the weather. In a South China sea scenario, Chinese military could move in bad weather where they have all the structural cap to do it and play at their advantages.

    Indian AF rejects advanced Hawk i

    The decision comes after the Ministry of Defence asked the service not request the aircraft following allegations that British company Rolls-Royce bribed officials of India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited between 2005 and 2009 to secure orders for engines to power the British Hawk 132 advanced jet trainers meant for the Indian Air Force.

    “We will not make any formal request for the Advanced Hawk to HAL, and the program will be officially shelved. This is because the MoD does not want [to] give additional orders for engines to tainted Rolls-Royce for the Advanced Hawk program,” a senior IAF official said. “IAF has no intentions to place any order for the Advanced Hawk trainers.”

    IDEX 2017: Lockheed Talks F-16 Sales and Upgrades with Region’s Forces

    The company plans to keep future production of F-16s in the US, he said. Lockheed has created F-16 assembly plants in Turkey, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands in the past. “The next customer that we sell F-16 to we will build them in the US,” said Mr Rick Groesch, Lockheed’s regional vice president.

    It will be interesting to know if his words stand globally for LM or if this concerns only his assigned market.

    Concerns about a potential, and so far unsubstantiated, nuclear “incident”, reportedly in the vicinity of the Arctic circle, spread in the past week after trace amounts of radioactive Iodine-131 of unknown origin were detected in January over large areas in Europe according to a report by the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, the French national public expert in nuclear and radiological risks. Since the isotope has a half-life of only eight days, the detection is an indication of a rather recent release. As the Barents Observer adds, “where the radioactivity is coming from is still a mystery.”

    The air filter station at Svanhovd – located a few hundred meters from Norway’s border to Russia’s Kola Peninsula in the north – was the first to measure small amounts of the radioactive Ionide-131 in the second week of January. Shortly thereafter, the same Iodine-131 isotope was measured in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. Within the next two weeks, traces of radioactivity, although in tiny amounts, were measured in Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France and Spain.

    Norway was the first to measure the radioactivity, but France was the first to officially inform the public about it.

    The name of the game when you have the opportunity to engage more or less at will is to engage only when you are ensured to be able to egress safely and quickly. Hence going frontal with AB on before turning away is the least scenario that one can expect.

    Don’t forget the final idea of operating at shores. The B allow both RN and RAF to land a small contingent and operate inside the enemy AIDS while the carrier stay off-range. Similar to the USMC.
    Also a bigger carrier embarks more troops when needed that can stay aboard longer with a carrier that need less support. Hence less ship and a more convenient navy to sustain each fiscal year.

    once the aircraft reached Aberdeen, eastern Scotland, they turned off their transponder becoming invisible to the flight tracking websites such as Flightradar24.com or Global.adsbexchange.com that use ADS-B, Mode S and MLAT technologies to monitor flights: a sign they were going operational and didn’t want to be tracked online.

    Wingtip: as some have already said , it’s a second order problem. Wingtips are separate entities that can be plugged in afterward if we accept that the interfaces would remain identical. The external carriage of the AIM9x also translate de-facto into a non-stealthy mode, something that is not inside the most acute domain of engagement of the plane.

    Oscillation: something that should strike us is that with an oscillation problem appearing when the plane is light, we can expect that :

    – Either the targeted mass of the airframe was not reached. Oscillation is a phenomena inherently dampened by the mass of the system. The more the mass the more natural dampening you have. Here we have an oscillation mode at low mass. It is then straightforward to assume that we have a lighter airframe that what was expected.
    – Either another variable that could influence the oscillation mode ended-up on a failure and even bypassed the mass dampening. This could be the dampener that suffered from a failed design or was ill-adapted or something else that ended up being badly designed like the supporting frame or mount of the landing gear etc…

    In anyway, with such low number of airframe and at this stage, the solution would be more easy to implement in both case, remaining at the end some very minor setbacks in the history of the program.

    Flying at about 100 to 120 knots, he approached 25 degrees angle of attack. Clemence, a former US Navy pilot, says other aircraft he’s flown such as the F/A-18 gently fall at maximum AOA because the thrust weight is not high enough. In a F-16 or a F/A-18, the flight controls would clamp down on the roll rate at maximum AOA in order to control side slip, he says.

    “With the thrust in this airplane, you can go to maximum AOA, slowest speed it can fly and you can actually climb away,” he says. “You can fly as slow as the flight controls will let you but you have enough thrust that you can actually have a rate of ascent, you can climb away, which not many aircraft I’ve flown can do that.”
