I would say that the glass and the aluminum layer act as an insulator and conductor spreading any hot spots and averaging the glass temperature. Hence the “looks good” compared to the surrounding background.

Do not confuse optic property that deals with reflection of an impinging ray of light and IR sensor that deal with emissivity that is a property of the temperature of the observed object.

You IR camera track photons emitted. This is why IR can see inside a dark room when an enhanced camera can’t unless there is a minimum level of light (sensitivity). Myth buster probably made the confusion. Behind the mirror there is more beaming light (reflection) that might have saturated the LCD sensor if the room was plunged in the dark. This effect is widely known has the hand mirror that you can use to signal your position to an aircraft on a sunny day.

Please note that I did not see the show. I am only conjecturing.

The data for the F-22 scanned from Lockheed’s FB-22 proposal slide says

    – 405 nm combat radius incl. 100 nm supersonic cruise
    – 455 nm combat radius incl. 50 nm supersonic cruise
    – 595 nm combat radius all subsonic

Looks like the supersonic cruise still represents a huge range penalty, even if no AB is used.. Makes me wonder if this term makes any sense, at all.

It doesn’t apply much here the FB22 was a different airframe: more weight, greater span hence more draggy in overall. Also BiO or Spud already posted the slide relative to the real F22 and 35.
Let’s remind all that those range values are based on a A2G mission (popup threat) were being able rush in supersonic to put your targeting sensor in range bears the outmost importance.

Let’s also remind all here that in A2G missions affording to cruise supersonically is so far an exclusivity of both designs.

The Marking on the wing root is the “P” logo of the Boeing Phantom Works.

    Thanks. Completely missed that.

I personally think we need to wait until Friday morning before we go down that route. Whilst Anglo-French partnerships are not necessarily tied to membership of the EU, the indications are that the French will be less friendly if the UK pulls out of the EU.

So whilst we head off to become the 51st State or cap in hand to The Commonwealth, France will be free to take the lead in Europe then.

Let’s… Wait & see. A lot can happen in dark days. And not always the darkest.
Regarding aero, I do think like you that if Fr lost FCAS competition*, MD will pull out. The problem for them will be that Airbus will stay in and the Germans will have cut the bridges as soon as they have secured the Future battle tank.
The dark days ahead are probably for MD, not for the UK.

*the video they released of a work model of a design under Catia with senior member discussing the configuration was very troubling to me. I am not sure that the choice of segregated competition was such a good choice in the end.

Given the way Europe is shaping up of late I wouldn’t want to put all my eggs in the European basket. An F-35 purchase to replace Tornado in early-mid 2020s would be sensible and backstop the failure of a future European project. Having F-35 on hand will also allow Germany to cede the dominant role that France is going to want to play in that European project (for the same reasons).

I very much think so. Add to this the lead role Germany might want to taken in the future battle tank.

Interesting that they made some low fly past. That was fast for the flap setting, also.

It’s a little bit awkward to have a twin engine trainer here. The picture seems to depict something more massive with a canard/strake and deep rooted rear wings suggesting a delta a la J20( ! ) with a blended configuration like the Gripen E.
It looks like more a new fighter jet design than that of lightweight trainer.

But obviously it is hard to guess with only two bad quality pics.

[…] then resorting to logical fallacies in lieu of arguments (and now we have yet another smokescreen with this weird accusation about Dassault drones and the Germawings crash. What’s next? Aliens did it?).

    .

Nothing weird like you imply. See the Germanwings thread.

French pilots’ union is filing a lawsuit over information from the investigation of the Germanwings Flight 9525 crash being leaked to media outlets. Guillaume Schmid, a representative of the French SNPL union, said that pilots were upset because information about the plane’s last moments were released to the media before they were made known to prosecutors, according to the Associated Press (AP). The lawsuit will be based on the violation of a French law, which dictates that information a.. – See more at: http://www.ooyuz.com/geturl?aid=5022140#sthash.CVwVJMAJ.dpuf

Egypt Pulls Second Black Box of Doomed Plane Out of the Sea

The second black box of the doomed EgyptAir plane that crashed last month killing all 66 people on board was pulled out of the Mediterranean Sea on Friday, a day after Egypt’s investigation committee said the plane’s cockpit voice recorder had been recovered.
