    Are they gonna run with their bulky radar on hands to keep tracking (or survive) the bad guy in stealthy mode*?

    Also, I never realized that even at gun range, a radar will face difficulties in tracking an F22**

    *22 km at 1200km/h is 1 min of detection and tracking time
    ** think at the much vaunted “radar lock” in the video b/w Rafale and F22!

    And regarding the F35, a networked, automated and centralized maintenance system is exactly what mitigates that risk*.

    *in the case of the Strategic bomber, it’s somewhat different since no usage of such device would be done until the last moment, turning it into a very effective mean to counter your deterrence. Hence the need to compartment.

    If your FADEC laws are accessible through ~3000 fighters disseminated all over the globe, someone, one day, will certainly get into it.

    Then FADEC (or FCS) response can be assessed and tricked into (for example) a modal response, disrupting the mechanichal integrity of the fan or Compressor.

    Similarly, with FADEC law on hands, someone can generate a pattern of signature of your exhaust gases.

    Or, someone with you FADEC law on hands and an industry graded CAD model, can trick your blade to break loose remotely with an EM impulse…

    It won’t cure your paranoia, but still, it’s better and cheaper to compartment the tech of your most priced jewel away from any ill-intentions.

    That said, it does not mean that you can’t re-use an engine on another platform, given that it stands strategic (Reco, silver bullet etc…).

    Just change the datalinks and you’ll be fine.

    Besides… what do the engines have to do with it?

    FADEC cyber attack (ground or airborne), EM attack, Fan&Compressor or exhaust signature…

    The less time an opponent have, the more survivable you are.

    You don’t sell abroad your deterrence vector, even in pieces.

    Russia to begin production of new high-speed helo in 2022

    Notice:
    – the short nose arrangement that provides a wide field of view to the pilots (seated well frwd and not buried aft of the nose like in the latest Eurocopter design).
    – side flat paneled extension that help reducing Mach drag, unload the rotor, provide room for fuel while keeping structural arrangement simple (bolted composite elements on a trapezoidal fuselage section)
    – their horizontal main axis suggesting an horizontal attitude during cruise and hence a low loaded rotors configuration. Add the the thick airfoil and we got a rotor system rotating rather slowly to increase speed and the efficiency of the propulsion system.
    – Thick airfoil coupled with contra-rotating rotors still lead to a low trim drag at slow speed (hence no need for a long, heavy & draggy or cumbersome and expensive to build composite tailboom).

    I am not sure if security considerations could not preclude the utilization of F35 engines or software in the LRS-B*.

    It won’t make much sens to have a new cyber-security command and then place the heart of your deterrence in the hands of your most exposed vector abroad (larger sale quantity, greater expected number of buyer nation, largest exposition of the plane system in lives or simulated operation).

    IMOHO, if some of the developed tech can somewhat be adapted from the bomber toward a fighter or an UCAV, the contrary might be only an exception (targeting, acquisition, HMD…).

    But the most pressing question still stands: has it some kind of cloaking device?!

    *If we look at the number to be procured and guess the number of engines as being b/w 3 or 4, then the prog could be self sustainable, speaking about engines only (+ other secret platforms).

    You’re confusing two different issues.

    The project
    The product.

    I’ve been trying to explain why air forces & armies want the product, & you keep going on about the project. I’ve agreed with you that the project has been badly run. But the product is a different matter.

    I understand Swerve.

    But the product is the end limit of the project. Let’s hope that somewhat it will end fitting the requirement.

    I have posted in the News section the amount of gears airlifted by the USAF in support of the Fr OP in Mali not so long ago. The numbers speak for themselves.

    A400 is anecdotal and its contribution in the future will remain so (or inversely proportional to its cost).

    And regarding my childish comment, I am sorry but this stands as the best suited toward the way that program was managed (a thought for the last decision to appoint a CEO from the auto Indus to clear the prod issues – after the railroad Tycoon (with a not so Tycoonesk backgrd), this was a must – a bloody one).
