Leading Edge Extensions do seem to offer a very compelling enhancement to Typhoon’s flight envelope going by what we’ve had access to already. We’ll find out by years end what advantages they’ll bring to the table. I suspect the process will start a short while after to start fitting CFTs ready for flight trials. We’ll have to see what happens.
Any info regarding those magical LE extensions will be welcomed.
Just to illustrate the civilian use of airspace over conflict zones The Aviationist blog has an image showing the re-routing that has gone on only since the US started bombing Iraq again:
http://theaviationist.com/2014/08/09/iraqi-airspace-closed/
To what extent is that just to avoid conflict with military routings as opposed to fear of IS SAMs?
Extracted from the above link:
It looks like U.S. flights are currently routing through Iranian airspace, that is considered safer than Iraqi one.
Some witness accounts by locals having seen a military aircraft shadowing the MH17 were aired by BBC in the early days.
Since then the footage has been removed..
Yes. I remind that one .The double bang (Witness states that there was two explosions) struck me at the time. But then it was not the priority.
Eyewitness #1: There were two explosions in the air. And this is how it broke apart. And [the fragments] blew apart like this, to the sides. And when …
It’s very thin, but I would like to go frwd with it.

[…] Fuel costs money, risk assessments will always be balanced against cost and lets be honest if the Ukrainian Government had shut its airspace after the An26 was shot down, there would have been a outcry about how government propaganda about an unproven threat to civilian aircraft was going to put airlines out of business and make your summer holiday cost more.
[…]
No, no , no.
After the An26, it was a faulty management system that led the MH17 to fly in the same airspace . EoA.
This airplane shld never have been over there. I don’t give any excuses to the separatist (you can read my posts on the subject some many boring pages away) but clearly there is more than one responsibility. And as I alry wrote, passengers (shld we say, surviving passengers ? ) are in their clear right to ask for explanations. Don’t give it away with the arguments that any commune living person on that planet is as greedy as can be hell with water.
Regarding the Su25, we know that it was probably not a Su25. If there was indeed something shadowing MH17, what was it and Why was it there ? That are the questions that should be assessed on an aviation Mil forum.
Not the odyssey of celebrity like SAM system carried on top of the now world famous trailer. C’mon, this is a Key publication forum, not the SAM version of Closer !

Hagel said the purpose of his visit went beyond arms sales.
“Our interests are varied and common – stability, security, economics, possibilities, freedom,” he said en route to India. “I’ll be there, working, yes, our specific issues, but it’s larger … than that.”
A neat lessons of foreign policy… I have an idea where that should be placarded .

…
(Just to remind all, Chuck Hagel is the United States Secretary of Defense).
Also:
Last month, India’s cabinet cleared a proposal to allow 49 percent foreign participation in the defence industry, up from a current cap of 26 percent.
Hagel said he would be looking at whether there would be the potential to go beyond 49 per cent something U.S. defence firms want before allowing technology transfers India craves.
Interesting

Helicopter-borne AEW will never compete with fixed-wing AEW assets for obvious reasons.
How many Mistrals could one have for the cost of either QE or PoW if you had earlier settled on VSTOL?
+1
But with a Mistral there is only a slight chance that you will be able to convert it to a CATOBAR. Hence, the choice makes also senses in the way that you do not have to make a choice. But a QE and a Mistral is a good compromise.
U.S. President … authorized “targeted airstrikes” in Iraq to protect American personnel and helpIraqi forces
http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/07/world/iraq-options/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
The President’s announcement that he’d authorized airstrikes came after the United States airdropped meals and water in Iraq, sending humanitarian aid to trapped minority groups.
“The mission was conducted by a number of U.S. military aircraft under the direction of U.S. Central Command,” a senior U.S. defense official said. “The aircraft that dropped the humanitarian supplies have now safely exited the immediate airspace over the drop area.”

Just to remind all: IrAF and USAF sharing the same skies and pursuing the same objectives.

Mi-8 with target drones?

http://russianplanes.net/images/to143000/142936.jpg
Interesting concept .But with side armor plate to protect the crew, it’s like more of a combat related application. Also, the perch in front suggest that they are air-launched. But the pic is PS 🙁
Don’t know about the “drone” but it looks like their are powered by turbojets and recovered by chutes.
Again, nearly a full page of comments without a single word on MH17 or its 298 victims.
It wasn’t me that trusted it, but Isengard.
But my comment re Patriot still stands. By the time that the Russian fighter enters service, the remotored MSE is likely to be the standard Patriot loadout.
Ok Ok but that figure is still impressive for a non-clean aircraft (simulated AA missiles in bay). When was the last time you saw a Typhoon or a Raf at that height with 4 AAM ?
Moreover the mission profile closely match that of a simulated intercept (seems a lot of other are interested to depict their potential in that mission profile  ).
So let’s understand that to simulate an intercept of a target closing fast and flying above the SAM envelope, they simply switched the Sa400 or whatever Russian have in their pocket with that of a well known figure of the Patriot.
Do I am right?
The Airbus Helicopter view of things:

Since you insist:
“Some materials which are used are not appropriate and we will correct that,” says Schoder.
“You always foresee [some corrosion] on a naval helicopter, but it is very difficult to avoid it 100%. You have to bring it to a level that’s manageable, but we should have been prepared better for that,” he says.
Point1:
Material will be corrected. Ok. But we are dealing with very basic stuff here. What shown is that Material were selected and applied in complete disregard of basic engineering knowledge. So, either your Staff is down the task by a several margin of magnitude, either you have some more serious problem internally. Or it’s both (most is what I hve seen).
Moreover sniping out rivets in such a quantity in a carbon structure will be destructive. Or even for a safety concern, will it have to be considered such. Composite impart larger, more expensive structural component that can’t simply be removed and replaced like an access panel. It’s going to be costly and on the long term. With the range of rework to be done, it might be better to scrap and rebuild from scratch (structure).
Point2:
S61, the venerable Helo that have been the backbone of many navies in the late 60’s, early 70’s are still flying providing somehow “critical” services all over the world. So far for your view on corrosion.
we should have been prepared better for that
Yes. of course. That’s sad you didn’t. Years of slipping quality made the problem a major concerns that shld have been taken more seriously. But we can all understand. Mind that you’ll never get out of a problem without clearing it first. Get the heads rolling down the tables.
Note:
I can’t believe that such work has been cleared from tip to toes by all the design/Engineering/manufacturing chain at NHI without a single one even noticing the strikingly bad usage of parts and material. Even the fitters must have been rushing to their supervisor’s desk with full braces of parts in their hands complaining that it’s a pig work they are asked to do (and most of the good ones don’t like it).
Don’t take me wrong, I have seen that alrdy. This is sadly a more generalized problem. And that kind of Industry are beacon for such individuals more surely that dripping honey for bees. This is not a knowledge default. Nor one related to under qualified professional (that can be discussed of course). This is corruption* (and it sister in law, Cronyism).
* I wrote a program last year to sustain (engineering) embedded investigator in a company but get discouraged by the level of it.
The C-103 design of KF-X, which seems going to be finalised still going for internal bay. Whether the first batch already equiped with this, it’s still being discussed.
Thx for tho Info
The catapult system for the missiles is strikingly similar to the LM design.
So, we probably have a shallow arrangement for A2A and a bulges one (belly pack?) for A2G. Do I understand right ?
In a surprising move, the Fr Gendarmerie announced that they have closed their investigation and the site is to be wrapped up with pieces of interest brought back to France (some said a memorial could be erected on the site):
“I have finished my investigations relating to accident investigation and identifying the victims,” said Colonel Patrick Touron, deputy head of the French Gendarmerie’s Criminal Research Institute.
“We scraped the sand and gathered everything so there is nothing belonging to a victim that could have been left behind,” Touron told AFP.
This closes a barely one week long on-site investigation.
As a side note:
it emerged that two people thought to have been on the plane had not boarded.
One of the two was an airline staff member whose name was in the list of passengers but who was not on the flight, Diendiere told AFP.
The second person had cancelled the booking the day before the flight but the change was not made to the list of passengers, he said.
