I am pretty sure it was ‘bellied’ in.
Yep that is my recollection too
Anyone know the whereabouts of WO Mick Jennings & his immaculate cockpit collection – need contact details so perhaps PM me, thanks.
Collection is still at Coltishall I believe
Yep it is pretty. I am hoping to post a few new shots as I have treated myself to a 3.2 megapixel camera.
Wonderful! Such blue sky…our cousins over the water wont believe the weather we have had today!
Thanks for some lovely images. Such a change to the usual November weather for Remembrance Sunday.🙂 🙂
There were some wonderful Remembrance services on the 11th November here in Nova Scotia…..unfortunately today the weather was horrendous with up to 40kn winds, driving sleet etc….we had all of November’s snow overnight. The 11th Nov is a public holiday in respect to the Vets and Glorious Dead in Nova Scotia along with many other provinces in Canada.
XE601 Whoooshhhh! I took this on her 40th birthday!!
I always thought they were built at the Jaguar factory in Castle Bromwich? Certainly Jaguars records show they built an awful lot of aircraft related stuff, not just Spits.
But clearly it was not a Jaguar plant then as it was specifically made for the Spit prod line
I have loads in UK, may have a copy of 601 using her tanks with me, will check later after work
I am looking for information on the loss of several Hawker Hunter aircraft that crashed / were abondoned in 1956 in thick fog? I belive they were flying out of West Raynham and trying to get down at Marham because of the fog. Any more info would be appreciated. Cheers.
Daniel.
This is a well known incident, the F1 had low fuel capacity, formation took off for combat practice (based at DFLS Day Fighter Leader School W Raynham) with a reasonable weather divert. After 45 mins they were on way back to WR when called to divert due to weather, went off towards Marham, and then told weather clear at WR….it then fogged out….one aircraft flamed out on late approach, he bellied it alongside runway, one on runway, at least 3 ejected due to no sight of runway and flame out etc. I too have tried to research this as I would like to ascertian which aircraft serials were involved! My cockpit WT648, I think may have been involved. I have more info, but in my ‘library’…regards
Totally irrelevant, Andy
No DA = No fly
…..snip rest
Yep Andy that is the bottom line as I have said before. I would love to see Concorde fly again, but ‘No DA, No fly’ is it (sung to Bob Marley’s music!!). Dear old Ashton…., please tell us your credentials old chap…..do you work for the CAA? Do you have huge knowledge of BCARs and other airworthiness issues? Do you have a DA waiting in the wings? (pardon the pun). You seem to insult other people nilly willy without laying your own cards on the table!
Regards to all
Looks like a the unit used to measure engine rpm by converting rotational movement of the crankshaft into an electrical signal to feed the engine tacho…
I think you are right about the retraction of the hook….quite common not to be able to retract it from the cockpit. I am not aware of an indication….unfortunately my main photos are not with me.
Which other vulcan was it that you mention??
Also speaking of spares to help other vulcans.. what happened to the one at wales museum now defunct? Was it spares recovered as much as possible or was it pounded into bits?
unfortunately the latter….poor condition, nose is still extant
Getting old Melv, I really should have thought of that one – I did the paint scheme. 😮
Here is a shot I took at the museum opening on 6 June 2000.
Incidentally I was saddened to learn that Patrick Taylor, who funded and donated this aircraft to the museum, passed away last week.
Mark
Nice shot…pity about Patrick…I am not sure Ju or Steve know 🙁
Tony – The hangar base was created by the destruction of the Belfast truss
hangar that stood on it’s site .I discussed this proposal as such at length
about a year ago. It transpires that the hangar itself was just a few months short of listing when it was destroyed therefore anything put in it’s place doesn’t necessarily need to conform to what was there.
I am greatly in favour of a re-engineered Belfast hangar using some of the existing principles of construction but making it contemporary. I base this on the premis that three buildings have been erected on site that don’t conform to it. I.e the AAM ,the T.2 which features box cladding and the HFL
hangar which is new build . I feel that the possibility is there and not to use the base is a crying shame. We shall see.
Agree lets put a sympathetically designed hangar on that base….NOW and give some nice deserving planes a spell indoors again! 🙂
O.K. I give you five pounds for the Spit spade grip. 😀
Nowadays the prices look more like this example:

UMMMMM?! NOOO! 😉
