Hi All,
I have recently obtained a ‘Mason’ A-4 ‘Skyhawk’ grip (with paperwork from the manufacturer to the ‘customer’, Douglas Aircraft Company) however, I can not find any pictures of this particular grip being used in any Skyhawk model. All pictures and models so for encountered using a similar switches/buttons, have the trim and nose wheel steering switches reversed. i.e the trim in the middle and the NWS switch on the left. Previous owner suggested the ‘F’ variant?
Does anyone know the model that this grip may have been fitted to??

Hi all,
Can anyone shed any light onto the application/aircraft use of this grip? It takes the Germanic KG series appearance but, I feel it has more of a ‘Soviet/Eastern Bloc’ style and appears quite an early example of such too.

Mystery solved!
It is from a Spanish Ha 200 Trainer, one popped up on evil bay a couple of weeks ago!

Jules,
The ‘London Gazette’ is the best place to start looking. It can be a bit of a trawl if you don’t have all his details, service number, date of award etc.
try this though:

Hi Miki,
Welcome to the forum and what an interesting grip you have. It looks like a cross between a French SAMM 103 and SAMM 110 grip but, the extension between the grip and the connector is something I have not seen before. Are there any markings on the data plate at the bottom of the grip or, any history?
However, I have seen pictures of ‘Former Yugoslavian’ J-22 Galeb and J-23 Oaro aircraft with the same style French grip as fitted to the Mirage III/F1 (SAMM 207), so your grip too, could be a product of the FRY aircraft industry?? Later/improved/upgraded J-21 Jastreb? Reason being that the J-21 originally used a copy of the German KG13 style grip and the extra length of your grip would compensate for the difference in the original height of the combined KG 13 grip and column ??
However, as always, my thoughts only!
Extra pictures have now appeared of your grip, indeed French manufacture!

Wonder if it’s early Russian jet?
Tony,
My thoughts exactly but, which and or when? My other lateral thoughts were ‘Soviet Bloc’ i.e. Czech/Polish/Hungarian/Romanian etc. Ian and I have a Polish ‘M-96 Iryda’ column that took some identifying but, it also bears the same basic design around the KG grips. This too, could have similar origins?
Dan, do you have a picture to help??

Ian,
sadly no, well not yet at least. More of an ‘Ask Aspel’ to try and identify it! Putting it to the wider ‘family’ in some hope of more info?

Hi Rob,
What aircraft is it fitted into in your picture? The Mk 2 Dunlop grip was fairly standard to a lot of late war aircraft what made them different, was the type of Selectric gun button and of course the different AH numbers stamped on the front. For example, the Vampire single seaters, Fury, Spiteful, Meteor 4, Balliol T1 and Mk22/24 Spitfires all used the AH8400. The T7 Meteor the AH9365, Sea Fury FB11 the AH8490 and so on, all appear identical in form apart from the above.
I did have a ‘bare’ example with no fittings that had one AH number crossed out and AH8400 stamped on it as well, I let Jon H have it a few years back, I don’t know if he still has it??
Cheers,

Of course I’m reading this!:)
Fantastic picture, exactly as required, thank you!
It certainly answers a few questions for me regarding identifying part numbers and grip fitment to later (NF) Meteors however, I am now just wondering if this AC14242, was a replacement or improved grip, just fitted to the post ‘operational’ aircraft (originally fitted with the AC10522), following conversion to more ‘mundane’ training roles, or an original fit for the NF14?
Any ideas? Anyone?

Mystery aircraft instrument panel- any ideas?

D-3 Sea Vixen? Or perhaps even earlier, DH 110?? Certainly matches the Vixen panel layout but, the cut outs for the flying instruments do not match production panels.
