That’s a good plan Sir!
Do you think a single theme of just UK related heavier than air machines or open to anything? Given the response to this thread and the pictures posted, there are some cracking examples out there.

Cool posts well done all…a good mix!!
I am thinking that one day we should do a control columnfest at Cockpitfest!!!
On second thoughts, my last sub theme went down like a lead balloon! (Warbird Alley)
Just got back from USA; whilst there, fell for a couple of B52 yokes….just finished one. Had to buy two/a pair to get a captain side to go with my other(s). Need to find a home for the other one before I decide to keep it!
The decal and cap were available…easily.
Tony,
I think that a display of columns/yokes etc. would be a good theme for a ‘mini’ display. Did not the mighty ‘AM’ do a similar display to great delight at one of the early ‘Fests’ ?

Hi Howard,
WOS informed me and the ZF590 crew on Saturday evening of your sad loss, please accept my sincere condolences to all. I know that the loss had a big impact on the NAM team but their professionalism shone through over the whole weekend, a legacy that I am sure he would be proud of.

Very nice items there! Is that Vulcan grip mounted on marble? Very fancy! You’re lucky to have a spare corner to prop the Nimrod column up in, it looks quite large. Did you get both the yokes at Popham, Darrell? I lightly fondled them in the back of the stall holder’s car but alas they were already sold. Now GCSE classes have finished at school proper work can begin. Not that historic but this early block F16 stick is no longer leaning on a shelf and looks improved. It’s not on a marble plinth though…
Hi Ian,
Just the simple addition of the lower part and the data plate has made all the difference! Did you make the bezel the grip is attached too?
Martyn
Hi TO
I would just like to thank you and the ever friendly staff at NAM for inviting me and all other fellow Lightning owners to this event. I had a fab time, the displays inside and outside were excellent, the guest speakers were brilliant and the enthusiasm they gave us for keeping the Lightning alive was encouraging to say the least. A fantastic weekend, I am so looking forward to Cockpitfest!

Hi Stephen,
27J is the NATO/AP1086 stores reference category for ‘Handle, Aircraft, Control’ and should appear on all control grips used in an aircraft application, certainly from the early 1960’s onwards, (please feel free anyone, to specify an actual date!), and the 4008 is the actual (military) stores reference number for that particular grip. This second number can be either a 3, 4, or 7 digit number. The ‘crows foot’ obviously indicates HM Government/Forces property.
There should also be a small elongated oval data plate with a number starting AC—– this is the manufacturers identification number and usually has an issue number and manufacture date stamped too.
The STI refers to a Special Technical Instruction, a (modification) reference, the EL probably ‘Electrical’ and the actual mod. number itself, perhaps a different switch or use modification.

Martyn

HI Stephen,
This grip is more probably from a Westland Wasp rather than Wessex. The lower trigger switch and the hoist switch as a toggle on the grip is the giveaway. It is however, exactly the same (physically) as a Wasp grip in my collection with the exception of the extra wording of ‘cable cutter’ with the red covered armament switch label.
Unfortunately, the details given on the data plates will only give information regarding to the grip itself (and its potential application), alas nothing to do with individual aircraft identity, more the shame. The same will be applied to your Vulcan grip, yes, its a B1 Vulcan but, unless you have other documentation/provenance identifying its history it will unfortunately remain just that, a B1 Vulcan grip.
Hope that helps?

Martyn

Would anybody happen to know on what types of aircraft a Kollsman Mk.28 altimeter would have been used? RAF Ref. Nr. 6A/9669.
It is certainly used on the Mk 2 Sea Vixen, illustrated parts list identifies as:
Altimeter, Flourescent, Mk28 Pt No 6A 9669 (plate ref 3B/39). I am pretty sure it was also fitted to the GR1/3 harrier too.

Hi Martyn,
The grip looks high because it is not fitted properly ,didnt have imperial allen keys to hand.
It was just the column that came from Shoreham ,i all ready had the Grip.Andrew
Hi Andrew,
That makes a bit more sense! May I trouble you to do some measuring for me at some stage and some closer pictures of the bottom end? As you can see from my picture, my column was chopped and I would like to reinstate it to near enough its original length(ish), for when I build my Vixen cockpit rig!
Martyn
Here is a Sea Vixen control column that i picked up from Shoreham yesterday.
HMS V
Nice Vixen column! Did you get any history with it at all? The grip looks very high on the column top compared to my Mk2 stick, is it perhaps an early version?

Hi Laurent,
Super grip, nice to see more ‘exotic’ grips, these seem to come up far too infrequently, but it is good to know they are out there and loved! It also demonstrates the Japanese ‘simplistic’ approach to grip/control design. Do you know the purpose of the ‘roller’ piece at the bottom of the column?

Just had a look at their site and shall be investing in some of that, by jove! Cheers for the link TA

Coldkiwi1,
Firstly, lovely examples thank you for posting. Can you show a picture of the ‘grip’ end of the K61 stick? I’m intrigued, like Ian, if there are any ‘function’ buttons etc. on the grip, as I believe that the Japanese put the gun/ordnance release on the throttle rather than the column. Pictures I have of other Japanese control columns also often have wooden grips fitted, does this have similar?
Kind regards,
Martyn

Hi Ian,
Crikey! that scrubbed up well!! And Deox C is?……………………..

No idea on weight but its not excessive. I bought them cos i liked the look and condition. They also have a similar look (according to pilots notes) to Sturgeon pedals with the single bar and leather foot strap.
Just curious as to what they are off.
Rob
Hi Rob,
I too thought they were Piston Provost too, so I passed the details of this auction to D.C. (of Hornet fame), he is after a’wt to do with the beast! Perhaps if they are no use to you he may relieve you of them??
