I loved the MiG-25, it was sad to see it out of service in the Indian air force. What a beautiful beast!! I would love to see the MiG-31 get some international orders. Who knows, maybe India would buy some for recon.

Aerodynamically, a tractor prop is always better than a pusher as it doesn’t have to cut through the wing boundary layer wake. The small improvement in lift (at low angles of attack) from a lower freestream turbulence level is eradicated by needing more juice to the engines to provide the same level of thrust.

If designed well, it will also aid the bound vortex in creating a velocity differential between top and bottom of the wing creating more lift at moderate to high angles of attack.

One of the reasons for the B-36 having its engines at the back was due to the leading edge sweep of the wing, that would enforce a large nacelle/pylon ahead of the wing to stop the propellor hitting the wing.

Anyway, the B-36 was a mistake. They chased the wrong compromise.

you really know your stuff!! If you were designing a CAS aircraft and you ideally wanted the following:

    1. Single engined
    2. STOL
    3. nose for mounting sensors and gun
    4. turbo prop
    5. Thick low aspect ratio wings
    6. Armored to the class of an attack helo

    what would you compromise?

Edit: forgot to add 7. rough field performance

    Great read. Thanks for posting!

Also, would be great to read about the current joint training flights that occur at the 3 airbases USAF operates in pakistan. Both airforces share the bases. Would be good if details on those “daily” exercises could be released in a timely manner.

I am just reading it all over again for the third time 😀 If the PAF can do that in unupgraded Mirage IIIs I would love to see what they can do with JF-17s, data link, refeulers and AWACS to boot.

Come to think of it I was suffering major jet lag brain fart.

4th Regiment can only belong to the 2nd Division, not the 3rd, since the outline of the regiments go like this.

    1st Division (1xx2x)
    1st Regiment (11x2x)
    2nd Regiment (12x2x)
    3rd Regiment (13x3x)

    2nd Division (1xx3x)
    4th Regiment (14x3x)
    5th Regiment (15x3x)
    6th Regiment (16x3x)

    3rd Division (1xx4x)
    7th Regiment (17x4x)
    8th Regiment (18x4x)
    9th Regiment (19x4x)

more or less you get the picture.

Thus 14045 is an impossible number. It should be 14035 or 17045.

don’t know but isn’t there an error here? If you look at first division 3rd regiment should it not read 13x2x?

yes they do look like those. Well, Iranians probably don’t have anything against skiiing and I dare say one wouldn’t want to go skiing in a skirt or something revealing in the first place 😀

I think that Chinese influence has not really broken through in South America yet. I do believe that China right now is focusing more in Africa, but I do see that influence expanding to South America. Although, I know there are intelligence reports out there talking of huge shipments of chinese arms to Bolivia via Venezuela and even via Brazil.

I for one would like to see a much broader partnership particularly with Brazil and Argentina.

As for the F-7G, its a wonderful little aircraft. My country bought some recently (Bangladesh), and I do believe its got great utility. I know that in the PAF the F-7PG was able to out turn the F-16 in combat. Range has been significantly improved over past MiG-21 derivatives but the Achilles heel of BVR still remains. However, with the new radar (as on the Bangladeshi F-7BG) it is possible to have some limited BVR capability, and may just be able to carry the SD-10, while not at its full range, at about 60% of the SD-10s range, still making it a viable BVR missile. However, loadout would still remain a problem. If you must add a BVR capability, I would go with one BVR centerline (we’d need to engineer that a bit), two drop tanks and two WVR.

Its great for maintaining territorial integrity, keeping your airforce flying, and as an interceptor against all but the BVR equiped crowd. And even there, the F-7G could just get lucky and sneak in.

I think there is a valid point about the TVC but with few caveats:

    1. While the usefulness of TVC is there, not only in WVR but in high alititde, bvr combat, there is also a question of wing loading. Generally, my thought is that the higher the wing loading the greater the need for a TVC. I think the J-10 would still make a formidable opponent given its generally lower combat wing loading.

    2. For all we know, the version of the J-10 Pakistan will be buying will have TVC. Typically Pakistan tends to order a smaller quantity but if they like a plane they tend to by around a hundred. Its likely that eventually Pakistan will have a good number of J-10s or even J-XXs. On the other hand, counting the numbers, India has far fewer FLANKERs than was projected in the time frame. This kind of delays has plagued the IAF for a long time and its unlikley they will either realize the 240 they projected, or do so at a considerably long time frame, by which time.

    3. Minor advantages does not mean that in some way the other aircraft like the FC-1/JF-17 are obsolete and will be ineffective / have poor effectiveness (say like being shot down in largely unfavorable ratios). Air combat is not like a drag race, its a lot more subtle, and it is unlikely that the IAF FLANKERs would provide a decisive advantage against anything other than PAF’s legacy fleet of F-7s and Mirages.

The Pucara looks great. But my swarm tactics would ideally prefer a single engined aircraft, for size, cost, maintenance and maneuverability. But simultaneously I want a clean nose and not a pusher configuration. Seems impossible but if there is a will there is a way 😀

My thought on the affair when I first thought about this configuration was an extended (gyroed) anti-rotating nose and use a WWII type nose mounted gun configuration. Since the most important weapon on this platform will be anti tank missiles mounted on the wings, the gun does not need to have the worlds fastest rate of fire. Sensors could be fitted on the extended gyro nose and also on the wing tips. Chaff/flair dispensers at the back and conventional bombs / cluster bombs carried inline.

Thank you so much gentlemen. Logan Hartke, pleuris, MadRat, Victor, Distiller, EdLaw & sferrin. It has been most informative reading your comments.

Looks like I have to start from scratch, as my design needs to be optimized for shorter landings. 🙁

Boy, I spent years designing this! At least day dreaming about it :p

Here it is for what its worth, but I think I’m going to go with a conventional layout or change it to a two engined OV-10 type

thanks. IF that is the case, could I say:

    1. that the down wash gives better low speed handling. This in turn means better STOL performance?

Also, is there a benefit in terms of higher speed performance? I noticed that higher speed light civilian aircraft always have a pull configuration while lower performance light aircraft tend to not mind as much a push configuration.

    Thanks again guys

    Oh, that’s Huitong’s old website, I even didn’t open it…:D

BTW, I’m not against the reported how much money for 200 airframe sort of thing, but no such reports said anything about what will happen if Chinese manufactures more? You can’t read across from 2.7 billion USD for 200 units to you only can manufacture 200 units? To find out clues, then we have to examine the basic & visible facts. .

Ok, let’s back to track. It seems Pakistan will do the overall marketing for JF-17 worldwide or CAC still can push its FC-1 to other countries using exactly JF-17 model? For example, it can push to Egypt like the K-8E? Which means building production line there like that of K-8E and modified it if necessary to suit customer’s particular requirements? But of course that’s oly my wild thinking.

hey Pinko, I once heard there was some form of division of labor there as to which countries pakistan will market to and which ones CAC will.

Thanks Pit, I think your knowledge on Venezuela’s air arm is unparralelled. Don’t mind the political banter here. I wish your airforce would buy some Chinese stuff 😀 but thats a political decision I guess. 🙂

thanks again for your detailed and informative posts!

Pit: that was really well answered. I agree with you there, its not as easy as it sounds . cheers and best of luck with those Flankers.

About the future, what do you think will be Venezuela’s next buy? what do you think SHOULD be Venezuela’s next buy?
