While I am not a big Super Hornet fan. Even they are more than a match for anything in the Iranian Air Force. (i.e. HMDS, AMRAAMS, AIM-9X, APG-73 or APG-79 Radars, etc.)
As you wish buddy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉
wasn’t the coolest thing about the Q-5 its internal bomb bay?
Well, at the moment the Iranian Air Force is just a paper tiger! Much like the Iraqi Air Force was before the first Gulf War. 😮
just don’t send your super bugs against them, you might get embarrassed. 🙂
Here is the link to the reworking of the MiG-31 after it was compromised
agree
My heart in this case is with the SeaEF 😉
I recon it was because of me 🙂
sorry folks.
moot point though, why would anybody including china buy the russian tikomirov series radars if they are compromised? any links Berlusconi? Although I grudgingly agree that this could be the case given the state of the Russian Aviation industry…
probably because with them, and the MiG-31 (or more specifically it’s Zaslon M radar) have already been compromised to the west.
I just read somewhre that the guy who compromised it was executed and the radar reworked – the present ones are apparently uncompromised… let me see if I can look up a link
edit: talking about the Zaslon
Wonder what kind of a tomcat it would have made if one made a plane completely with titanium alloys and using Electron beam welding for the entire plane..
“Super Tomcat” 🙂
My research into radar diameters have hit a dead end. Neither the Tikhomirov models fit nor the Zaslon. The AWG-9 doesn’t seem to have a counter part in the East!
NIIP Tikhomirov N001VE
Length: 3m Diameter: 160mm Weight: 105kg
AWG-9
diameter 36 inches (914 mm)
1300 lb (590 kg)
Zaslon M
diameter 1.40 m (55 in) http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/vvs/mig31-01.htm
weight (couldn’t find anyone?) about twice the weight of AWG-9 though
**interesting tit bits: According to Russkaya Avionika, the search range of the RP-31 Zaslon (Shield) radar has been almost doubled

Thanks for taking the time out to write such a well detailed and researched answer. I’m convinced you’re right.
So, in effect iran cannot mint new tomcats.
Fedaykin I think thats a good point. However, do u think they could make a “make do” box that could fly in ground configured pre set settings?
Also I want everyone’s opinion on what russian / chinese radar they could put inside the tomcats, so as to be able to fire russian BVRAAMS
I’ve seen those 😀
Same here. I was following the JH-7 as a kid in the early 1990s when it was like the J-10. No official acknowledgement and no pictures except for an artistic impression which was pictured in Jane’s for years. When the FBC-1 first flew in 1998, it was like finally seeing the Loch Ness monster.
PLA watching is much easier today with the internet. The FC-1 we get to see from design to first flight and we are even watching assembly pictures of prototypes like 01 and 04.
Wow you’re a real veteran!
At that time I had just started reading military aviation from second hand book shops giving away Jane’s defence weekly for pennies.. What a mystery military aviation was! Had never operated a computer forget internet.
I love these planes. even more than the J-10s
