    well the question is

    what would you recomend legends or RIAT

    ive done riat for years but not legends

    so whats better money wise e.t.c.
    I love neave duxford so thats 1 point to legends but will al the aircraft i wanna see be at RIAT

    Legends every time….RIAT is dull, full of lots of the same stuff (endless Herks, KC135s etc)….Legends is smaller and far more intimate and sheer fun…the only time I really enjoyed legends was flying in in a Hawk!!

    some good replies there…i did not dare include my day job types as they are still in service!!! besides one does notget ones hands dirty on them when flying lol!!

    Call it old age!! My feeling is incorrect. Only the outer wing panels outboard of the wing centre sectionwere fabric (my my, Mr Hiscock’s book is useful!!)

    I have only ever seen one lump of fabric wing in existence (other than S-M!) and that was bought by Tim Moore at the Chippenham Scrapyard auction…i was being a gentleman so did not bid against him or indeed Mark12 on the spitfire stuff! Being a gentleman does not always pay!!!! I saw that section (leading edge) being offered for sale a few years later (not by Tim) at quite a mark up….ISTR from the <£100 it went for!

    concur regarding that only Science Museum example was built to have fabric wings……though not sure how it retained this fabric wing as they must have been a pig to look after, from memory most of under wing is ally skinned (given case ejectors) hardly surprising really. Any Hurri in long term service would likely have been fitted with metal skinned wings (I have a niggly feeling that this had happened to the S-M example too).

    The S-M (cheeky!) mk 1 is the only Hurri to have an external armoured screen, but, again from memory, the later aerial, anti spin/improved keel surface stake fairing, but no big old venturi!

    Just checked the pix and it has retained the early aerial!!

    Many thanx to the PM that led to me getting a free hunter fin, wont mention the exceedingly kind source, unless the benefactor is happy! All i need now is a rudder!!!!
    Got lots of weird looks in Tescos and at work driving around with it on the roof rack of the pug!:)

    1. I would like to re-brief your acquaintance, friend or whatever he is…it is this sort of ill informed guff that belittles much of the efforts of Britain’s heritage savers.:mad:
    2. I am disappointed that you (WP840) so readily accepted the view of this muppet when you have been frequenting this forum for so long and seen threads covering how the ‘junk’ has won awards etc.
    3. We (the BDAC) have achieved an awful lot with volunteer effort and minimal resources….no big lottery grant for us.

    Yesterday I was speaking to somebody I know who works at Boscombe Down about the possibility of an Air Cadet visit to the Boscombe Down museum.

    I was amazed when he told me that no personell, to his knowledge are allowed to visit the museum because it is considered too dangerous.

    He also stated that despite being launched in a blaze of glory a couple of years ago it has very quickly degenerated into scrap dump for anything at Boscombe which nobody has any use for and is of absolutly no interest as it is all literally junk!
