it is the probe probare boscombe down badge…i have a copy, she also has the QinetiQ iX logo too
Is it just me who is frustrated with sellers who end listings early, because they are “no longer available” i.e they’ve flogged said item for cash, thus breaking ebay rules, (without which, society will fall headlong into depravity).
No its not just you Stuart….it happened to me today on two items I was bidding for…and from a person I have known for years and respected. Bitter taste or what. He is on this forum, but I shall not name him…out of respect for me…suffice to say I am fuming….it was one of the last parts I wanted for my Spitfire and I had held high bid for several days 😡
Last Thursday 24/01/08 I was driving Through Shillingstone Dorset heading West when I saw a Jaguar flying left to right in front of me .
The course it was taking would be in the direction of Boscombe Down.
I thought all Jags had retired
Can anyone confirm whether any are still flying or not, the Jaguar has a distinctive shape so it would be hard to mistake it for something else.
Perhaps someone in ATC can help Time was 10.45 hrs
Regards
John
Alphajet old chap
There is now a No 10 Petition (courtesy of Historic Military Vehicle Forum)
I have pair of wheels which were on a small trailer in an engineering contractors yard @ Biggar, this was quite near the Carluke MU.
The hubs are in very good condition, the markings on the hub are : DRG NO AH2061, ISSUE 26, S9745C, an original Dunlop 7.50 x 10 tyre is fitted to one hub. The wheels may have been fitted to Mk 1 Spitfire, can any one confirm this?
AH2061s were fitted to early Spits (and some early Hurricanes)….really nice find there old chap!
Hows about….
…underneath these flaps lay buttons or levers which, when pressed, caused retractable foot stirrups to appear so that our hero could climb into his Typhoon or Tempest?
Or did I just dream that?
The hurri had such a system but you pushed the hand hold (upper) I will look into Tyffie/Temp
Tony,
What happened to the other five Hurricane canopies?
During my telephone conversation with Ian Foster he mentioned that the Halifax bombdoors were mostly the short rear doors but that some of the important hinges were still present and that one bomb door was restored while others were used as patterns (Deryck, you know more about that than I do). There were also wing bomb doors present there. He also mentioned that near Elgin a Firefly canopy is in use in a garden.
Cheers
Cees
I had three, all were saved….one of my three went to the BBMF as a spare (tho prob fying now!)…the other went to a northern Hurri builder who ‘disappeared’ shortly after and the other can be seen on my website where it should be! 🙂
Hi
Can anyone tell me what aircraft this prop blade was fitted to?Stencilled on it is the number RA 25772-2
Any help much appreciated.
Gannet?
Hi everyone,
I acquired these parts at an aerojumble many years ago.
I knew what they were then, but the fact that they have been buried in the garage for probably twenty years and have only just come to light again, means that the memory has faded!
I have half a recollection that they may be Typhoon or Tempest parts?
Obviously from a scrappy, or maybe a wreck. They have been bead blasted and the treatment seems to have removed all traces of part numbers, bar a single “4” – not much help there then!
Any ideas gratefully received…
…and the usual, anyone interested in them?
Air Ministry
I cannot believe noone has recognised the 50p piece in the middle…! I’ll sell you one so that you can have a pair for a £1 Alan….cannot say fairer than that!:D
My Hurricane canopy was one of 6 being used as cloches near North Weald…acquired 1985
Horsa wheels are still being used on a farmers harvest trailer near Witney…Vickers Gunbus interplane struts were used round a large garden in Oxford…..Spitfire prop blades used as fence posts near Oxford….the list goes on and on…..more boringly a Hunter canopy I rescued 3 years ago from an Andover garden
As far as I know I am sure someone else can advise, bombs, rockets etc don’t require a deactivation certificate !
However I wouldnt like to be someone discovered with a live anything.
Because it is common practice if the Police “discover” as happened recently when a public spirited visitor to someones house spotted a rocket of some sort and reported it, poor rocket owner was arrested, half the town evacuated, collector branded a nutter in all the press and said item taken away by eod despite of the fact it said Drill Practice on it which was barely reported later.
If you possessed anything live which went off and caused mayhem/casualties I think the courts would throw the key away !
These are fine provided they are FFE – Free From Explosives…should be marked as such (and should be confirmed as being so by someone sensible/expert). Note, thinking museums will also check their ejection seats are ‘FFE’ and deactivate the baro release etc….the BTRU (Barometric Time Release Unit) ensures seat seperation as soon as the aircraft descends below 10000ft (or whatever the capsule is set to). It has no explosive but has a huge spring and bolt that extends very very quickly.
Back on deact guns, my MP is writing to the Minister to find out what is going on….
Chaps
I have sent emails to the Justice Minister Rt Hon Jack Straw MP, who (orignally as shadow Home Sec in the 90s after Dunblane) was interested in my suggested register of deact guns.
I have also raised my head above the parapet to email the Prime Minister. This is the peoples government, apparently, so why dont you try it?
That’s not true.
The pre-95 spec deact rules included mods to prevent chambering of a round…i.e hardened pins welded across the chamber, firing pins removed and bolt end’s sawn through at 45 deg.Post 95 spec meant addition of welded up actions and receivers etc to prevent disassembly or field strip.
I was just saying what the Section 5 and deact chappy told me….he said that the 95 changes were mainly to do with SMGs….is that not the case?
I have been chatting to various people who will have their livelihoods affected by this.
It would seem that the 1995 standard was primarily brought in to tighten up SMG’s (i.e. UZIs, AK47s) and pistols (revolvers etc) and anything that could still chamber a round. Things like LMGs (like Browning 303s etc) have the same deac standard applied. Ergo, banning pre-95s would be silly for avation LMGs because the deact standard is the same.
Luckily there are high profile collectors out there and ‘professional’ people that even include celebrities and at least one vicar. An online petition would be agood idea as would emails and consultation with MPs etc.
When I constructed the thread I sent off letters and emails to the Home Sec and various others (Shadow Home Sec and my MP).
My worry is the WW2 aircraft stuff…..will it have to be deactivated to 1995 standards? Or will they have to be destroyed?! The latter is unacceptable in my view.
