Eggbeater slagging off is a tradition here Rocketeer. I wouldn’t take it too seriously. They are as much a part of aviation history as proper, beautiful, graceful airframes.

Yes Peter, it is a photograph that I took at the time.
AB910 was lined up to take off. A Harrier was parked on the side of the grass strip. The Harvard was taxiing up to take off point and was forced out onto the grass runway by the parked Harrier. At that moment AB started its roll on what is a very short strip, so power was applied very quickly.

After this incident several BBMF rules were changed, one being that prior to TO, at or after run up, the aircraft was to take up a position at 90 degrees to the TO direction so allowing full view of the TO path.

I guess someone better defend the poor helicopter, its a marvelous invention and many of the older types have great character. If i could fit it in my backgarden [or even get it there] i would give it a home.
The whirlwind especially the series 2 model is a favourite of mine.

You are right old chap, I just let these mislead trolling-twonks go on and on to themselves!:D They just want someone like me to bite…..I try not to, but…….the helicopter is a fantastic aircraft (yes it is….it has wings just they rotate- duh! hence Rotary Wing). They forget that the Chinook (well just one) helped phenomenally in the Falklands. They forget that the only aircraft in the American Air Museum at Duxford that could still earn its keep and be made airworthy easily and relatively cheaply is the Huey. They forget that when you are lying next to your wrecked car with your daughter looking like her back is injured that the sight of the air ambulance is pure beauty, hope and relief personified…cannot land a fixed wing in a ploughed field. Also when you are blobbing around in your dinghy (even on a drill) that the Helicopter and its winchman is a great sight (having said that, I only flight test helicopters nowadays…so asking how I would get in the water in the first place….better scrub that line!!)
Sure they are not as romantic as fixed wing and are ugly but they are oh so useful and utilitarian.

So lets not hear anymore silly talk of petrol and matches….you dont have to like them or personally preserve them, but they have their places and have done a phenomenal amount in this world to save lives (not just take them).:)

The meteor was not actually lost, happened in 1959, the chap was getting a lift back to Sylt, misheard a command and jumped over the side hitting tail, aircraft landed……tried a trawl of net but could not find anything…sorry.
