Mostly from Northolt (Station Flight which was mouthwatering!). On the 5th July 1946 he flew to Boscombe Down in PX286 (and back) to discuss the sadly frequent Mustang crashes with the TPs. I am now involved in digging one of them. By that stage of his career he was in RAF accident investigation. I do have a number of shots of the Hornet. Another (a Sea Hornet) I posted on another thrread. There is a cracking shot of one landing in the neg collection.
I am hoping to get pictures published and more widely available and hope that as well as pleasing enthusiasts they will also be a small source of revenue to help me restore my toys….don’t wish to be mercenary, but the Spit and Hurri is a bottomless pit!
I will post some more images soon…even a Whitley for Elliot. There are some nice Farnborough ones from the 50s.
Now if I can just get my web site up and running!!
Great to see this beautiful aeroplane coming to fruition 🙂
we had them at Boscombe until quite recently!
hunter gets my vote (well from that angle)
it was interesting, but the bloke digging up scraps and suggesting the RN kings crown WW2 button was German made me giggle
Ok, received yesterday, photograph taken at lunchtime, posted on to Carpetbagger in Andover by recorded delivery…..
Thats why we should all be so greatful to this man and his franchise, and all stop moaning about paying £30 to go to legends as it helps to keep these pieces of history gracing our skies, and not gathering dust in a museam.
Yep I agree, but one chap asked how to get more peeps into the show and particularly families. I for one believe the money is well well worth it, tho’ I tend not to take the family (partly for cost and partly for sheer selfishness on my part). Love Legends to bits
Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone can help… I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and try to arrange a flight in one of the 17’s in the states as its an excuse to go on holiday and the final (ultimate) thing left for me to do with my obsession with the aircraft!!
Any ideas on best aircraft/ org to go with (would like to do it in california) and any problems in not being a US citizen in having the flight? Whats the deal if it cancelled and you’ve made the trip over? Hard luck i guess?
Have looked into nine-o-nine, senti journey, Allie overcast, Yankee Lady and liberty belle – these seem to be the only ones doing it.
Guys that have done it, I would appreciate your thoughts!
Go for it!! Geedee and I flew in the B17 Fuddy Duddy in 2005 at Oshkosh..25 mins of joy. What I would suggest is that you time your trip to coincide with an airshow….the best one/choice would be the one at Commemorative Air Force Airsho…lots to ride in (see latest Flypast for details). You will then get a few days at a nice airshow as well and the choice of a few bombers to fly in.
If you make it to Dux on 17th Feb, we could bring some phots
A large rotating object (prop and engine torque) will cause kicks (like you get if you splash the throttle of a decent size car engine in neutral). The oleo travel serves as a damper with travel which will absorb/damp the motion. Removing travel/damping will cause the vibes and kicks to ‘metaphorically’ have nowhere to go! Hence you will have a rotating driving force that could interact with the airframe (and more importantly the oleos) in an unpleasant way. It can be a prob with helicopters.
weird acquisition for the RAFM (tho i am pleased to see it)…
cheers for info on Meteor Merlin compatibility
Can one use two piece meteor heads/banks on a Merlin?
it will take a bit of time JDK!!:)
cheers mine looks like a short skirt late merlin then…cheers
Another thought, (having examined the photos) is that there doesn’t appear to be any oleo leg travel ,i.e a rigid length of box section down to the axle; this will exacerbate the torque reaction from the prop.
could get some ground resonance problems
