All 100 and 600/700 series Merlins were fuel injected. Royces opted to use single-point injection into the supercharger rather than the German direct injection “diesel fashion”. One reason was that you get evaporative cooling in the induction system, a kind of intercooling effect. The Germans also had vast experience of building diesel fuel pumps pre-war, they are pretty precision pieces of kit.
Without the cooling effect, Di is one reason why German V12s are about 30% bigger capacity for the same power output, although I have noticed that they were not much heavier than Merlins.
There are a few injected Merlins in warbirds, so the Hurricane story could well be true.

Slightly off thread so apologies, would any cockpit owners be interested in showing their cockpits at a small aviation event, and would you allow the public to sit in them?
With yourselves watching of course!

Depends on where, when and how far!
I consider CockpitFest as one of my ‘holidays’ hence dont mind forking out substantial amounts to get there etc. It is also a fantastic social event for the go-getters in this hobby….speaking of which, I hope that the Forum’s Shack cockpit buying group can chalk up a ‘People’s Cockpit’ success at CockpitFest!! 🙂

I wonder if, bearing in mind the photos would have been taken on different days/year etc, if anyone has managed to find one unique aircraft (say PA474) in several locations!?

The Spitfire squadron is bounced from above and slaughtered, this is where Canfield is indeed killed (“he just blew up”)
A scramble………….(when Duxford is bombed “God’s teeth…take COVER” says Kenneth More’s character (Groupie) after admonishing SO Harvey (don’t you go dribbling there Moggster!!) for her WAAF’s using their gas mask containers for handbags….
The scene where the parachute fails to open…sad one that
The dead body lying face down in the water….this F/O Lambert who has a dicky oil pressure (“They will be your trouble now” says Plummer to Canfield, who is going to Scotland to teach alot of kids with “down on their Faces” which is of course more dangerous “than fighting the Germans”!!!

Thanx for clarification, I was given undercover space in 2004 for the Hurri and the other cockpits were just outside the hangar,
Noone is knocking the event….I believe it is still the best grass roots exhibition out there.

Anyway….back to my original request

Whatever weekend would annoy someone. Fathers Day weekend was to give Fathers the chance to say why not go here….nice idea I think. I love taking my daughters there (when the ex lets me)

Are you gonna display anything at CockpitFest?

It’s unusual of me to be asking this sort of question, but I am hoping someone on the board will be able to clear up a minor mystery for me.

I have several of the fuse boxes seen here. For years, I have casually accepted it as being a fuse box with the Air Ministry Stores reference of 5C/1963.

However, I now realise that 5C/1963 refers to the fuse (Type N) which lives inside the box.

So my question is, does anyone recognise this unit and can you tell me what aircraft it might be from?

I am now satisfied that it is not a standard Air Ministry fuse box. There are numbers stamped onto the rear, including:-

“FES 2 1 1SF” and “30366 52”

If any of the above rings bells for you, I’d be grateful to hear the details.

Probably so. I have to say that I’ve never really seen the attraction of collecting bits of twisted and mostly unrecognisable alloy, whether they were once part of a Spitfire or a Vulcan or not.

In the case of an aircraft that went to war or had an illustrious history, there is more to the item that just what it is…example? well, I have some tiny fragments from Nicolson VC’s hurricane that he won his VC in…not much to look at, but they are part of a much bigger picture, one of valour, heroics, guts and determination.

What I am trying to say is you may not recognise the bits but the history you will and if I was given the choice of seeing just a picture board about Nicolson VC or a picture board with some artefacts…I know what I would go for. They are your tangible connection with the event. 🙂

XZ457 damaged by engine fire on take-off RNAS Yeovilton 20/10/05.

Transferred to Boscombe Down Avaition Collection by July 2003, still slightly barbequed !

I’m sure Rocketeer can tell us more….(?)

It has been restored with nozzles, new canopy, reskinned and looks very very nice…and of course has its kills on the side. It is possible to have a looksy

Hello all, im new to this forum and aquired a Lightning F6 nose section some while back. Anyone out there got experience of hand pump hyd rigs to raise and lower a lightning canopy?

Pleased you got my old cockpit….broke my heart to sell it to Gordon…oh well. Is it still Essex based? and I hope you love it!! 🙂
