Hold on! I am certain about reversed colours on Hurricanes, not Spitfires. I used the phrase “not normally on Spitfires”. If I had said “never on Spitfires” someone would come up with an example to prove me wrong!

The reversed Hurricane schemes are very well documented.

And yes I agree, the desert scheme on the Spitfire is an example of scheme reversal.

Aircraft ‘built’ around a constructors plate do run the risk of being labelled ‘replicas’.

In my opinion it is more about continuity and provenance than the percentage of original parts.

Rather than comparing tonal values between the two aircraft I was simply comparing the tonal values (by eye) on each aircraft seperatley. The darker tone areas on one aircarft (Dark Green) are in similar positions to the lighter toned (Ocean Grey) areas on the other – leading me to conclude that the colours are reversed.

To my eye the colours look reversed on these aircraft (this was something done on Hurricanes certainly but not normally on Spitfires). I also note that the cowling panels around the spinner are very worn on the aircraft in the foreground but look fresh on the one in the background. There have been cases of reverse camouflage on Spitfires as I recall but I do not have a photo to hand. Perhaps the rear Spitfire was re-painted with the colours reversed?

Mmm, I think IMHO its a little dismissive to say they are toys. A huge amount of effort goes in to these models. I grant you that they are not absolutely accurate. The lack of dihedral on the big Spitfire was very obvious and there is no grasp of how to set out the ‘star and bar’ markings on the Mustangs but these are really just quibbles and will probably be ironed out eventually. There was a very nice man from Corgi who posted here last year – they do listen to positive and negative comments.

    Thanks Mark 🙂 ,

I appreciate that PS88 was a one off.

The colours used were still the BS colours albeit in a unique scheme were they not?

I seem to have overlooked this thread as it is developing very nicely. The scheme on these Spitfires looks like the standard land based scheme to me.

I do agree that colours changed on aircraft in service, either through weathering, sun fading or being re-painted. Whether or not a present day Spitfire scheme is exactly as it would have been when it was in service sixty years ago is impossible to prove as old colour photographs are not reliable sources of accurate colour information.

As we discussed in a previous thread I believe the only reasonable path to take is to obtain colour chips of the relevent British Standard colours (most of the wartime ones still appear on the list) and to use these where indicated on the factory drawings. Only in a special case where one might be trying to re-create a particular aircraft in an unusual or particularly weathered scheme would I suggest that it was reasonable to deviate from British Standards. Of course there remains the probability (as suggested by Mark 12) that, say, Medium Sea Grey paint at Castle Bromwich was different from that being used at Westlands for example. In my opinion it is the intention that the colour should have been British Standard Medium Sea Grey that is the over-riding factor, regardless of the possibility of local deviation.

To what extent the British Standard colours have changed over the years has been challenged but one has to bear in mind they are ‘standards’ and the aim of BSI is to preserve these colours as constant references.

The new PS915 scheme that looks so eye catching used British Standard ‘Medium Sea Grey’ and ‘PRU Blue’ (I think I am correct in saying) and looks ‘right’. The original aircraft may have been stained, worn and sun-bleached but one has to draw a line in the sand somewhere.

Is that big Mosquito out yet?

Also I heard that the ‘flat’ wing problem on the 1/32 Spitfires will be corrected when they re-tool for subsequent versions.

    Well Janie,

My name, address and telephone number were on the drawing (it was a drawing done by me you see, not an original Supermarine drawing) so there was no excuse really!

PT462 seems to be a Spitfire fated never to be painted correctly. The current scheme was applied in Florida and although the roundel sizes and camouflage lines are correct all the colours are wrong. It was done to a black and white line drawing supplied by me with the proviso that the new owner contact me directly to borrow my colour chip book. Unfortunately he never did!

    Daz,

You will have to try harder than that!

Search out the post titled ‘Guess the Aircraft’ started by Eddie about a month ago as it has lots of up to date pics of the TE311 restoration.
