Just shows what a poor memory I have 😉 Nice pics chaps.
I recommend a book called ‘Spitfire LF. Mk. IX in detail’, published by WMP (authors Koran, Danda, Martinek & Khol), 2002. You can get it from Midland Counties Publications. It has more detailed pictures of the Spitfire IX than anyone could ever need!
Chris,
The BBMF has a policy of engine and prop interchangibility to ensure continuity of operations by reducing the number of spare props & engines they need to carry. This is why you will sometimes see unusual combinations.
I cannot remember AR501 ever having three stack exhausts.
I can only agree with what Bruce has posted. There are however moves to put the so called ‘fishtail’ (splayed) stacks back in to limited production. There is some demand for them as they give the aircraft a more authentic appearance. Just look at the pictures of MK959, which has these to appreciate the subtle but appreciable difference.

Hi Skybolt,
No matter what it is – we would love to see a picture 🙂
Hi Dan,
I think you have a late pre-war badge there (judging by the pale background). These were worn on (white) flying suits but were not issued after 1939 – although some were still around after this time.
Sorry Mate, squadron badges were not worn on uniform in WWII (it would have been giving too much away to the enemy if captured)! If you are thinking about a blazer type crest or a post war badge try Stewart Aviation, here is a link:

Remember if you want the badge to be WWII era you must specify the Kings Crown!
That would be change from Type D to Type A – good news! Well done Fluffy BTW 🙂
Latest news from NZ on WIX forum…..
Looks like a complete re-build of TE311.
Probably too late already I suspect 😉
