Definately Spitfire IX or XI – can you please post a pic of the lower part of the blade with the markings?
Two P-40 first flights in the space of a week, down under (NZ and Australia) they are certainly keeping up their reputations – well done everyone!
Spitfire having a Packard Merlin. Thought it was Rolls Royce, unless this one had a Mustang unit.
Packard also built the Merlin 266 – as fitted to the Spitfire 16.
John,
Now that is more like it.
Faultless.
Looks great in the b & w picture – when was that taken and why the reversion back to high gloss etc with the current scheme? I believe she was ususally kept indoors under the care of 1 Sqdn.
Inkworm, there are 4 dimension to all military aircraft….span, length, height and politics! Rather it stays with BBMF than languishing in the corner of a hangar somewhere out of public view.
100% agreed C6! Can’t think of a better place for her at the moment. Looks like BBMF is the only expanding unit in the RAF these days
Thanks for the link Uwe – should have checked before-hand!
Hope you like it
Lovely photo Uwe – any more from that session you could post please?
Yes would’nd it be nice to see it next to the doll or twilight tear…..
Probably more chance of one of them than the other.
I still think it would have looked nice as AI-E myself or maybe it did…;)
I for one would like to see that – but thats ‘red tape’ for you
I am puzzled by the Neil Williams landing episode mentioned earlier – ‘the dreaded rich mixture cut’ makes it sound like some Achilles Heel. Surely thats more to do with the power-plant than the aircraft? And I can’t say I am aware that the Merlin has a repuation for such failings. Certainly the Mercuries on the Blenheim can suffer such a problem is the throttle is opened up too quickly in a similar situation….
KA114 would have to be very close to a first flight right now to stand any chance of making it here for the show season. I think she will be worth waiting for….
Was this the best ever private European warbird collection? Difficult to top having a Lanc, Mosquito, Hurricane and several Spitfires in one place!
Or any stencils – I expect Roobarb is gearing up for an all out assault on it 😉
Yes its an incredible achievement, both with regard to what the aircraft did in service – and the ever-lasting admiration that has followed her ever since. I wonder what Mr Mitchell would make of it (I would like to think he would approve).
PL965 was flown this afternoon – always a privelage to witness, but just that bit more special with todays significance.
What fonts do you use for the different bits of stenciling?
We (Warbird Colour Services) create our own fonts for our various projects. We have several RAF WWII period fonts and also, uniquely, have re-created the ‘Castle Bromwich’ font used for the larger sized Spitfire stencils in 1944/45 – all taken from original surviving examples. Some manufacturers, largely US based, used standard fonts that can still be obtained commercialy – trying to get this detail right is something we take very seriously. In some cases, again particularly US manufacturers, stencils were little used and the majority of the markings were applied by rubber stamps (P-51) or water-slide decals (P-40 for example). We reproduce these too.
Thanks mate, have you ever stencilled a Spitfire in 1/72nd scale!!!!!
Mark;)
Only ever done it 1:1 scale!!
I guess the stencils will be applied as soon as the top coat has been put on over the primer:D:D:D
Just cos its not one of your nice shiny Navy aeroplanes!! 😀
