Looks nice – any shots on the ground?
I’ve seen that axe before!
So the original artwork was scanned and a vinyl stencil mask made by their graphics department and laser cut to have as rounded profile as the original.
I think this would have caused any of us who do this sort of work quite a headache – seems to have worked out rather nicely and looks very accurate in terms of setting out and style thanks to the scanning of the period photo. Well done Roobs 🙂
I’m intrigued as to the relevance of the MH434 clip at the bottom of the advert….
They are selling a Spitfire – and thats a great ad for one – thats the relevence of the video!
Not sure if the USAF or US Navy have such a program.
They don’t – but the USAF has a Heritage Flight program which teams up with historic privately owned aircraft.
Beautiful work, well done TFC!
One thing often puzzles me is why some prop overhaul shops (generally on US prop types) do not paint the yellow tips on the reverse face of the blades. Never seen this on a WWII period shot so it seems to be a modern trend. Any suggestions?
Is the Dakota in new markings?
Yes it is…. http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=108206&highlight=dakota+bbmf
I hear their FW190A is being shipped there this week. I understand that one will be flown.
It already has!
As an aircraft maintenance technician of 20 years in the RAF and volunteering on a collection of airworthy historics….
Some very sound advice in this post!
Steve,
A good article to compliment nice work, well done.
Thanks mate 🙂 We selected Doncaster as its not easy to find an ultra modern spray facility that is large enough to take a Spitfire and that is prepared to do the work for a reasonable rate (along with being familiar with the Aerodex matt paint we like to use, rather than gloss white!).
We would love to find a one-piece screen. However the version fitted to the XI is more akin to the early Spitfire screens sans external armour – it also has a lower rear frame profile and would require the hood being replaced also. The 19’s originally used a double skin screen I understand which were, in more recent years, changed to a thick single skin on BBMF a/c.
We did remove the rear view mirror as a move in the right direction!
So are the markings definately ‘restored’?
the *other* PR-11 resto
What – PL983 (or the static one in the USAF Museum?)
Still not a decent picture?
There are loads on the WIX link above
Love the early P-40’s – and this one looks fabulous! Well done to everyone at Avspecs 🙂
Yes, it’s slightly expensive, but it would cost more than that to fill my petrol tank up………………….but Ive got that book forever!
That certainly puts the cost of this incredible book in to perspective! 🙂
