Perhaps an e-mail to the organisation via their website might get some further information.

I am surprised that the total is less than 20, – I really thought we had a few more than that

    Its more than 20 ! I forgot TD248! 😮 Post corrected.

If G-AIDN T8 does return from the States that will help to balance the books.

It will not help the airworthy ‘count’ no matter where it is – at least not for some time I suspect.

What we need on this thread is someone who knows about the Spitfire scene, who could tell us how many airworthy examples we presently have in the UK.

Though this is obviously in a frequent state of flux (hence this thread)
it feels like about low 20’s.

The BBMF gets us off to a flying start with five…

20* (with the departure of 386) – these are ‘currently airworthy aircraft’ – ie: minor servicing excepted. This count would exclude AR501 which is in bits at the moment and out for the rest of the season.

    21* if you include Seafire SX336 🙂

Mark – it looks to me like the scheme has the same demarcations as the post war Seafire schemes, obviously with different colours though. As you have recent experience with Seafire schemes, would you agree with that? Obviously it will make life easier in future should the new owner decide to use that scheme if the drawings are available for it!

I see what you mean Eddie. Alas the drawings for the Seafire scheme are no longer available (unless anyone happens to have a copies 😮 ). The two recent Seafire schemes I was involved in were both derived from extensive and careful study of lots of period photos wth a bit of cross reference to late Spitfire schemes and a sprinkling of enthusiasm for the type (not to mention the collaboration with a well known Spitfire historian 😉 ). It was also apparant that there was a huge variation in the setting out of the upper surface Extra Dark Sea Grey to Sky demarcation line on the fuselage and wing join, virtually no two aircraft being identical.

Also, try and look for copies of the “Aircraft Production” periodical. The RAF Museum Department library has most of these, and each edition showcases the making of a particular type. Good examples I know of include the Mosquito, Hornet, Vampire, Typhoon, etc. These have some good reference photos too.

Well worth searching out – the two part article on Walrus construction was very enlightening (JDK – have you read it?)

thats a lovely scheme. Bound to be objections but sod them.

Why would anyone object? – its a wonderful scheme and 100% authentic for that airframe

    About 60 gallons/hour in cruise

    😮

about twice as much in a display (max. continous power)

    😮 😮

There were three Extras doing a short routine after returning from a formation sortie at about that time. Perhaps they were using that callsign. Wx OK, but it started to rain shortly afterwards.

It’s Formation Training Week at NW, so lots of Yaks and Extras around.

Yes the Yaks were using the call-sign ‘Hurricane’, the Mustang was using the call-sign ‘Mustang’ so an easy conclusion to draw. It will be another year or so before a Hurricane will be seen regularly at Weald, the Yaks will then need to think up a new call-sign!

Is that something that can be/is cleaned off over a season, or is it a permanent thing in the paint?

If you want the stains removed they can be taken off with some ‘Dasic Aeroclean’ and elbow grease. Best done after each flight or it can start to become a big chore. Not sure what BBMF policy is but they have fours sets of stains to deal with!

🙂 I know many of the pilots don’t own or operate their own aeroplanes so i wonder how they feel when a “favourite ” steed is going to be put up for sale and whether they have any inputs about it being sold.

Answer to Q1: Usually completely gutted. Answer to Q2: If they do not own the aircraft or a share in it they would not normally have much an input.

I did read the Mk 18 Spit was the equivalent of the Seafire 45/46 is this correct ?

No – there is more commonality with the Spitfire 21/22 as the Seafire 45/56 had the later, revised wing (non-folding). The Spitfire 18 had the ‘original’ Spitfire wing, with solid spars.

As Mark V says, things have moved on as regards these items on early Spits. 🙂

maybe I should have said moved ‘back’. 🙂

As for the mistakes, the only people who will moan are the so called expert researchers / roundle police

And not a single member of the “roundel police” in sight at Rotterdam Airport…

These people are obviously a ruddy menace – but just who are the ’roundel police’?
