Metal came from a crashed Wellington when he was stationed at RAF Debden. Presume on the dump ?
Off thread but very interesting the T-21 Sedbergh WB920 in camouflage finish not seen that before. Thanks BAZV.
RAF Warwick opened in December 1941 as a Relief Landing Ground in 23 Group. Church Lawford used it with Oxfords and Tutors for flying instructor training. On Oct 01 1942 18(P)AFU came into being at Church Lawford and the airfield was mainly used by Oxfords and some Ansons. At the end of May 1945 the airfield was placed on Care and Maintenance.
This website is very useful for that area http://www.aviationarchaeology.org.uk/marg/index.htm
The latest SAMI scale aircraft modelling magazine has a very good article on this by a chap who built the T.T.10 in 1/48th scale.
With thanks to Dave Fleming from another forum 2008: FR209 AAEE/ECFS/EFS/Met Res Flt To 6891M 13.9.51
FR209 is interesting as it served into the early 50s in overall natural metal, and was converted to glass nosed standard.
Hope this solves the identity.
Link opened ok aircraft was P-47D 42-74652 coded HL:K bar under of the 83 FS,78th Fighter Group from Duxford flown by 2/Lt Kenneth Hindersinn. On 5/1/44 this aircraft was bounced by FW 190s in the Nantes area and shot down the pilot becoming a POW. Article says aircraft remains was found on a farm in Gourbesville near Cherbourg.
Flygirl,
Why ? in my youth in the sixties we did not have much but we had a certain amount of stability in life ,achievable goals be it education, career, finances. today it is too opressive, too P.C. and anything aeronautical is fast disappearing just look at the defence cuts today !
ETPS used Mitchell II FL215 at some point.
Many thanks for that most interesting.
Flygirl,
Yes the current times ….. scares the hell out of me !
Even better read “Stranger To The Ground” by Richard Bach, at night and when there is a thunderstorm around.
For those that missed it is on late tonight 23:20 BBC2. Stop knocking it Martin Shaw is a good ambassador for aviation better than crap programmes like X -Factor ,soaps ,etc. For details of Guy Gibsons second lady read “Guy Gibson” by Richard Morris published 1994 wake up at the back of the class !
The best for inspiration “The Mighty Eighth” by Roger Freeman.
It was a good day,met Peter Randall of the Little Friends website,Steve Gotts founder of FOTE,and author John Hamlin who kindly signed my Airfield Focus Bottisham book. Got to ride in a WC-51 around the airfield, thanks to the owners.
Good flyover by the Fokker Triplane and well attended. Well done to Jason and all the organisers.
Pagen,
The Tiger Moth and gliders are at Podington with interspersed shots of the RAF At Home Cottesmore 1964 I think ?
At the beginning some nice aerial shots of the Podington dispersals before Santa Pod. Thanks to Topcameraman for processing these but I believe they were taken by Tony Barrow gliding instructor ATC/Four Counties RAFGSA.
