Four from the Doug Arnold Hanger at Biggin Hill, 18-6-89.

    1) Is the F4U-1A NX55JP or FG1D N55JP & Bu 88391. I have both IDs on the back of the photo

    2) I believe this is the Kingcobra that this was later sold to TFC as their 2nd Kingcobra. Again I’ve got 2 IDs on the back of the photo 42-69097 & 42-68897. Still

    3) N314BG/44-73140.

    4) Spitfire XVI G-SXVI/TE356/7001M/D-A.

I’d like to see the photo Tony, if you can find it. Sadly, I can’t remember from the airshow who it belonged to. Shame I didn’t take a shot from the opposite angle too.

    Mark,

Geoff & Lesley were at the funeral. Geoff said it was a lovely send off. Only met Pinkie the once, when he opened the museum for the first Sunday of the season a few years back. Also there was a 131 Sqn pilot I know who was part of the escort when Pinkie was shot down. I don’t think there were any hard feelings!

    Dave,

Are you saying my photo is of EJ922? If so then thanks for the ID.

I’m 99% certain at least 2 of those (pictured in a very early edition of Flypast circa 1982-3) are the ones owned by Peter Smith, and displayed for many years at Brooklands.

The FlyPast article in question was in the second issue, July/August 1981. There is one very small photo of the Typhoon cockpit section ‘recovered from a midlands scrapyard in 1977’ . It also says that it ‘is owned by a group of aviation enthusiasts known as the Air Historical Group’. This cockpit section has more fuselage surviving aft than the one in Mark 12s photo, more like the one in my photo below, taken at Biggin Hill in 1986.

it’s crammed with fascinating artifacts, many with personal stories related to them.

As I explained to Nigel Rose, when showing him around the museum, our aim at Shoreham is to where we can tell the story of those involved with the relics we have on display, in the aircraft and on the ground. For example, one display contains an account by a Bf109 pilot of his last flight which ended with him force-landing in Kent, together with an eyewitness account from a civilian on the ground who saw him force-land. Including photos of those involved is also important to us as well. Our aim is to ensure that the aircrew & civilans don’t just become names on a display board.

Umm, Geoff may not be aware.

    Indeed, that is/was the case.

Anyway, my appologies to Flood & Anna for any upset I may have inadvertantly caused to you both. 😮 😮 😮

The new wooden propeller would perform a lot better once the needles had dropped off.

They couldn’t get a Fairey for the Xmas tree and had to make do with a Supermarine instead.
