    Guys,

I seem to have started something here! All it needs is someone to ask the right question, and look what you get.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but can you people do a list of what a/c carries what markings, ie spinner colour, badge carried, and fuselage codes, and tie as many as pos to their UK reg?

(It might be an idea to find some way of referring to the various ‘staffel’ & ‘geschwader’ badges, could one of you allocate a letter/name to each one, and post a pic of each with the letter, so we can work from the same standard?)

    A typical entry for a ‘109’ could run – G-ABCD , yellow 8+ -, badge A, also carried yellow4+I, badge C.

Is it possible to establish the ‘proper’ ID (UK reg) of the aircraft in the photos you’ve posted & others you haven’t? It would be nice to be able to say ‘Ah yes, yellow8, badge B, must be G-ADEF!.’

A website is a great idea, or what about a forum type site where people could discuss the film, post info & pix, and gradually build up a database?. It would be great to see all the various pix of the a/c involved that have cropped up on this forum etc.(Proctukas etc) all in one place.

I wonder if other forums might produce further photos or info? If any of you belong to other forums, could you try a post like the one that started this off, and see what comes of it? Some years ago at an aviation enthusast fair (at Feltham I think), I seem to recall seeing a typed newsletter/list which memory tells me was produced by one or more people either fans of the film, or trying to do what we’re doing here? I don’t know it it was a one-off or a regular newsletter.

I could really do with a copy of Robert Rudhall’s book. Are there any useful tables like the one/s I’ve suggested above?

Plenty there for you to chew over, and its getting late, so a spot of supper for me & off to bed.

    Geoff.

    Col Gibbon,

Bruce is not available by email I’m afraid. He is of course a very well known author of many books on things aeroplane. I will send you his address by email. Which is the correct email address, the one in your last post, or the one in your second post, one has an ‘l’ in it, the other doesn’t!!!

I’ve found a website listing all the Japanese aircraft names, with a translation, and there’s no mention of a ‘Typhoon’.

    Col Gibbon,

Looking through Bruce Robertson’s ‘British military serials 1878-1987’ I’ve come up with 21 DC-2s used by the RAF, these were- AX755, AX767-769, DG468&469, HK820&821, HK837, HK847 & HK867. All were impressed/aquired in the Middle East or India. 31 sqdn seems to have been the main user, but a couple also served with 117 & 216 Sqdn.

The attached photo comes from AirBritain ‘Royal Air Force aircraft DA100-DZ999’ and shows DC-2 VP-APA, which was impressed as DG478. 31 sqdn was India Command’s first transport sqdn and flew a daily schedule into Habbaniya ‘during the trouble’. The photo came from Bruce Robertson. I can give you his address, if you like, via email.

What can I say but many many thanks. Are there any more photos, or info on what carried what?

This info really needs to be put together in a book or article. Being as I’m editor of the Shoreham Aircraft Museum newsletter, I’d love to print an article, if someone wants to put something together? How about it septic, DDM or Mark12???? If anyone’s willing I can give more guidance re the newsletters article format etc.

A Typhoon was modified to carry radar (AI Mk VA), but it was only a trial instalation. I think ‘Typhoon at war’ has some photos of it. Production Typhoon began to appear from May 1941, but I’m sure that the question is wrong, unless there was another aircraft called ‘Typhoon’ and the complier mixed the two up, or could it be a trick question???

188 Sqdn! Weren’t they renumbered 633 sqdn, and converted to Mossies? 😉

Many thanks DDM & Mark. Any further pix of the various unit markings used would be most welcome, but these will do fine if no others surface.

Were the red & yellow nosed ‘109s’, or the ‘111s’, referred to by a staffel/geschwader No or were unit Nos, even made up ones, not used, for reasons mentioned above?

    Gateguard,

This is the info (from ‘After the Battle’) that I posted in an earlier thread which touched on this subject. Hope it helps.

    The Spitfires used were-

    RW352 as RA617/QV-S, SL574 as RV214/QV-R, TE358 as AR251/QV-X, TE456 as TE425/PD-S, RW345 as TA614, SL745 as TR627/QV-T, TB293 as RV415/QV-U, TE288 as AR251/QV-X & ZD-S, TE341 as VT151/ZD-S & QV-S, and TB885 as R1247/QV-V. Note- the s/n ‘AR251’ was carried by two Spitfires in the film.

Apart from the above, TB863 & RR263 have also been credited with appearing in this film.

    RW352, SL574, TE358 & TE456 were the flyers.

Four other spits were taken to Lynham, but were not selected for use, these were- RW394, TB752, TE311, & PK608.

    Other aircraft used were-

    Hurricane LF363 (the only flyer) as T4125/SD-K, -N, -R, -X, -W. Possibly P2617 as T4107/SD-P, -W, -X. Unknown as V5276/SD-Y, -W. Replica as R7141/SD-T, -F.

Bulldog G-ABBB. A full size Bulldog replica was built specially for the film, for use as background dressing, for studio cockpit close-ups, and after being broken up, for the wrecked Bulldog. G-ABBB was given the s/n K2496, though the Bulldog Bader crashed in was K1676. The replica carried the s/n K2494, but became K2496 for the studio scenes and the crash. The Bulldog which was seen to crash was actually a model.

    Bristol Fighter D8096

    Avro 504 E3404. Unknown 504 in background, pos E449, H2311, or replica.

True, but just think of all those Corgi models you could buy the wife, or there’s the RAF museum G-string 😉
