” have to laugh at this, there is probably about the same amount of radiation in your wrist watch’s luminous markings as there is in the instruments of a warbird!
Cheers……………..”
Well you may well be right Warbird, but browsing through the channels the other week I watched a bit of the Antiques Roadshow, and they set aside about 5 minutes of that programme describing the dangerous nature of the luminous Radium dials on old watches,so they obviously feel that even that small amount is potentially harmful.
I’m as mystified as you Firebird, but BAA have decreed that the Trident should be off thier hands by March or else…:(
I’ve got a couple of pics of ‘434 in her ‘AV-H’ markings parked up at the end of the day at Biggin Hill in ’93 (I think). One is a ratehr nice sunset shot which includes the Dutch-marked SeaFury OFMC used to have.Let me know if they’d be any use. 🙂
As a slight aside,a number of early Swifts were shipped off to Australia to act as ground targets during Operation ‘Buffalo’,the controversial test-dropping of a number of atomic weapons at Maralinga. You wonder whether anything of them might survive, and whether they would be safe to handle.
Love the pictures Der,thanks for sharing.Regards the JP’s,wasn’t there a Jp team called The Blades or The Swords or something like that??
It should work fine if you’ve got Windows Media Player.Click on the ‘View’ option at the top of the playscreen and go down to options. You should then see something about ‘Formats’.This gives a list of formats that you want your player to play,eg MPEG,AVI etc. There should be one for Wav-put a tick in the box next to it and give it a whirl. If that doesn’t work take a very large hammer to it…:D
It sounds daft, but you might also want to check that you’ve got the sound on and the volume turned up,I’ve made that mistake many a time-doh!
“Did the Stuka ever have any air-to-air kills thoroughout its wartime service?”
It’s thought that Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the Luftwaffe’s most decorated pilot and a Ju87 driver throughout his career, scored perhaps as many as half a dozen air-air victories on the Eastern Front. It’s worth mentioning though that he was shot down a number of times himself!
Looks rather like the one-off Blackburn YB.7,the competitor to the Fairey Gannet.I live in Hounslow and I’ve heard alot about Coley’s yard (didn’t HAC/TFC’s Hawker Nimrod come from there?) but I’ve no idea where it was exactly. Can anyone fill me in?
I do view all new threads but I’m not all that keen on photography so when stuff comes up about the Canon this and the Nikkon that I’m generally outta here! 😀 I can’t afford the gear and the work of others on this forum far outstrips anything I could do.
I also find it a bit tedious when a discussion goes on and on,particularly when it’s on a specific subject,eg the B and C wing Spitfire debate a few days back!No offence to anyone,it just wasn’t my cuppa tea…
PS I did download the Concorde Wav.,thanks for putting it up. 😉
“(Sorry! Wish there was a way we could tell if our inboxes are full BEFORE someone tries to send us a message…Is there a way, anyone?)”
Doesn’t look like it Ashely,I’ve been having the same probs meself.
A*roplane Monthly ran a feature on the scrapping of various types at Cosford on the early 50’s in an issue a month or two ago.The shot above of teh Lanc and Mossies was one of a number of heartbreaking images used in the feature. 🙁
Whilst sites like these are sad to see from a historic and preservational point of view,I can’t help feeling there is something ‘artistic’ about them, particularly with the graffiti on the Herald. It looks like an album cover for an Indie band or something like that. (The band Suede released an album a few years ago with a wrecked Lightning on the cover which looked like it had been shot up on the Pendine Ranges or somewhere like that-anyone know which Lightning it was,or which album for that matter?)
On the subject of preservation, the Herald situation isn’t too bad with a number in museums, and atleast one about to be housed in Duxford’s AirSpace project. As for Lightnings,it’s a shame the F.2A’s haven’t survived in greater numbers, the only ‘safe’ example is at East Fortune, with another pair corroding steadily at a museum in Germany. That said, there are plenty of Lightnings of various types still extant,so we mustn’t grumble too much.
Wow,sounds like an interesting experience Mark.I dropped into the Science Museum yesterday while I was ‘up in town’ and had a good nosey around the flight gallery (again-this was my second visit in just a couple of months.)I dropped in on a whim,so hadn’t taken my camera with me or anything like that, and I have to say I probably enjoyed the visit more for not having brought my camera.I just wandered round and took my time and took things in,rather than rushing around for the best views and worrying about lighting effects etc. It’s amazing how many historic aircraft are crammed into such a relatively small space, and the engine collection is impressive too.
As some of you may know, the Supermarine S.6B has been undergoing some renovation work over the last few months, with various bits away at Skysport. The work now appears to be finished, with all the ‘This aircraft is under restoration’ placards taken down and all the bits back in place. She looks great. 😎
Do you have any pics of P9444 in storage alongside the Hurri Mark? (hint, hint)
“Try this one.
UK. 1959
Serial and location?
Mark”
Judging by what appears to be an early style windscreen,I’d say it’s either P2617 now in the BofB Hall at Hendon or perhaps the Science Museum’s example I posted pics of above, although I’d have thought that would’ve been at south Ken already by the time of the pic.
Does anyone know for certain whether P2617 served in the Battle of Britain? It was for a long time stated that it was under repair during the BofB period having seen action in France in the spring.Since then some, including one or two B of B vets have come forward stating that they have ‘617 in thier logbook.Anyone know for sure??
The red and white Dr.1 was flown for quite a while as part of the World War One Combat Team (The Wombats),as was the black D.VII.The Dr.1 was indeed sold on to a French owner and tragically it crashed fatally at a fly-in in Germany about 18 months ago. 🙁
