I don’t think I’ve much to add to what’s already been said. It’s a terrible tragedy and my thoughts go out to all concerned.I was there and saw the entire accident unfortunately, the first time I’ve witnessed an incident of any sort at an airshow.
I join in the criticism of Sky for thier coverage of the incident,I can only say I’m glad I can’t get Sky.On the flipside,I didn’t feel that the BBC coverage was too bad, they seemed to take a rational approach, atleast in the evening news that I saw.
I was at the eastern end of the airfield,so all the aircraft taxied past my position before take off.I will always remember Niel Rix in the back seat, smiling and waving to the kids in the crowd, and wishing I could swap places with him.I don’t think the image would leave me even if I wanted it to.
As for the talk of ‘giving up airshows’ etc etc,I don’t buy it.I was in two minds after the accident, wondering if I should stay to watch the show when it resumed, and decided I should give my support to the show and stay, although a number of other people around me seemed to be leaving.
It doesn’t make me feel better to read of the Hienkel accident in the US.Condolances to the bereaved of those who’ve perished in both accidents. 🙁

“On the subject of the Coventry accident (which I unfortunately witnessed), does anyone else think that it was in poor taste for Aeroplane to publish a photo of the wing collapsing in their news section this month.”

Very much agreed.I am pretty disappointed in Aeroplane for printing that pic as it’s such a good magazine otherwsie.I was so displeased with them that I wrote an email of complaint to them as soon as I saw the pic, only to be told that in an automatic reply that everyone is out of the office and emails won’t be dealt with for a week.Oh well…

I stand corrected, cheers David. Was there any particular reason why so few Commandos were operated in Europe?

A C46 Commando would be fine, but only if the novel is based in South East Asia or the Pacific. The C46 as far as I’m aware was never involved in the war against Germany.

I agree with you entirely Moggy, regional news people seem to be the worst.I was up in the Midlands around the time that the AAIB issued it’s report on the Spirit of StLouis crash at Coventry. Not only did BBC Midlands Today slander the historic aircraft movement as per usual, but they also saw fit to show the entire crash sequence again. There I was thinking I was watching some archive library footage of the aircraft, and suddenly ‘snap!’ went the wing.Every last second of the wing fold, spin and impact were shown. What tasteful folks these media types are…

I think what Tom might have been referring to is the time scale with the CAA,ie will she be cleared to display at Legends?
As for knocking Skyraiders,we should remember that it IS a WW2 aircraft by design and first flew in 1945 (perhaps even ’44?).If it hadn’t been for the Atom Bomb the Skyraider might well have been unleashed on the Japanese.
Hurri looks beautiful, can’t wait to see her…:)

Nice pics Whiskey, thanks for those 🙂 Interesting shot of the P38, that tail-down attitude means they must have the belly tanks full of fuel.Could be interesting if she developed some sort of engine or landing gear problem,my understanding of FAA regulations is that you’re not allowed to jettison any external stores, even in a an emergency.
The Corsair is an F4U1 and was originally built with a birdcage canopy.I’ve read that they intend to re-fit the birdcage canopy in the near future.
    Nice pics,thanks again Whiskey!

PS Can anyone identify what that aircraft is taking off in the background in the first P40 shot?

Hope she makes it back Ok,it wouldn’t be a Duxford show without Sally. On the subject of Stringbags, there doesn’t seem to be a Swordfish on the list of participants 😮 Poor old Stringbag…:(

You’re a Legends first-timer Kev?Good god you’re in for a treat! Prepare to have your breath taken away for an entire afternoon. 🙂
On the subject of the S.E.5 and other WW1 types, you have to consider thier operational needs and limitations. The light wieght WW1 stuff doesn’t really mix very well in the company of the WW2 stuff-the prop wash from something like a Mustang has the potential to demolish a whole row of SE5’s!The marshalling of these earlier types therefore takes some planning if they’re not to be damaged by the more powerful stuff. The more powerful stuff there is at the show, the fewer ‘safe havens’ you have for the older stuff.
WW1 aircraft also have negligable cross-wind tolerance,so there is a strong chance that they may not be able to display when you’ve spent gooodness knows how much booking them.A slight crosswind and the money goes down the drain.
You could perhaps also argue that Duxford isn’t the best setting for these earlier types.Old Warden or Brieghton is IMHO a more appropriate place to display them, partly because they’re not so large and show the aircraft off to better effect.Take the Bleriot replica at Biggin for example. It sounds like a nice idea to add it to the mixture of the show, but from what some people have told me,only a small proportion of the crowd got to see much of it.
So,to sum up,to my mind it makes more sense to book more aircraft of a kind that are more likely to be able to display, and display impressively, than leaving room for earlier types which might not even get off the ground.
It may not sound like it,but I love early aviation history as much as any other, and I love to see early aircraft flying, but I do feel that they get a bit lost at the bigger shows.

“Isn’t that as it should be, bare fuselage and painted wings????”

You may be right Yak11,but I’d always thought the originals were left in natural metal if they weren’t camouflaged. It’s not something I’d noticed on original photo’s.
Anyway, enough nit-picking,congratulations to TFC for getting her ready in time and I look forward to seeing her in just 3 days time! 🙂

Here’s a pic of Twilight Tear in her new colours.Looks pretty smart, although they seem to have run out of time on the paint stripping after they did the fuselage and decided to spray the wings silver to save time.Note the flaps in transit to the closed position…

WF369 is the example at Newark. She’s scheduled to go into the new display hangar which is being built on the site, which will make her the only Varsity indoors anywhere in the world.

Thanks for your responses folks.By coincidence,I picked up this month’s issue of Aeroplane and there’s a reader’s letter about Bedsheet Bomber in the Crosswind section.Apparently, her log books and other paperwork have ‘gone missing’ over the years and this is causing confusion over who owns what. The aircraft continues to rot while the legal issues are sorted out.As an interesting side note,Bedsheet is actually the Mitchell which appears in ‘633 Squadron’,aswell as being the cameraship for many of the air-air sequences.Sad to see her deteriorating so far.
The Sandhoft Mitchell looks a sorry sight n’all.Would be nice to think that perhaps the two wrecks could be amalgamated into one good example, even if it’s only static.

Harvard perhaps???Looks like the buzzing from that supersonic prop upset your focus just a tad! 😉
