Grrrrrrrrrrh Lancman! 😉 While I see some people’s point about the YAM Halibag,I still feel obliged to defend it,to the death if necessary!(Well, maybe not death, but you know what I mean!)
The point is that she is a huge acheivement and doesn’t deserve to have fun poked at her or the folks who built her.To many, including veterans, she’s a real Halifax, which is good enough for me.She’s also the only Hali we’re likely to see standing on her own two feet here in the UK.Hastings wings or no,she’s still pretty impressive!

Is this something Andy is buying for himself or will it become part of the Shuttleworth Collection itself? It seems odd because I’ve always been told that the Collection only operates British aircraft.
    Can anyone elaborate??

Thinking back to something I read in Lancaster at War about this incident a while ago,I remember that the armourers did an equally commendable job to make the aircraft safe as the pilot/aircrew did in bringing her down safely.
As has been mentioned, she was carrying mines, which were made live on contact with salt water.Nothing could be done with the wreck untill these were made safe, which meant that the armourers had to cut access holes into the bomb-bay to get access to the mines, which were submerged in sand and water for much of the time, making the already dangerous job extremely difficult.

    Hi Nielly,
There are quite a few I can suggest off thet op of my head-

The Few by Andrew Kaplan and Derek Collier:This is an excellent landscape format book first published in 1990,but it’s still an excellent book on the subject. It was reprinted in 200o for the 60th anniversary,so shouldn’t be too tricky ti find a copy.

The Battle of Britain by Roy Conyers-Nesbitt:This is an excellent book in terms of it’s photographic content. The text is good, but many of the pics are previously unpublished.

Fighter by Len Dieghton:This is the classic work on the Battle, although some regard it as a bit controversial.Even one or two veterans have criticised it’s accuracy in some respects.

Strike From The Sky By Alexander McKee:Written in a similar style to ‘Fighter’,this is an in depth account of the Battle from it’s earliest days, going right back to the first Luftwaffe excursions over Britain in 1939.Reading it at the moment,so can’t give you a full overview, but excellent so far.

The Battle of Britain by Richard Hough & Denis Richards:This one is a bit peculiar in that it’s not that good when it comes to giving the history of the Battle itself, but gives a very good insight into the political & military build up to the war and the RAF’s expansion programmes, technical developments etc before the Battle itself.

These are just a few (if you’ll pardon the pun) I’ve chosen from my rather vast bookshelf. One of the works I’ve never got my hands on is ‘The Narrow Margin’ by Derrick Wood and Derek Dempster.I’ve heard alot about it,so if anyopne has read it,I’d be glad to know what they think of it.
Hope this lot will do to be going on with Nielly.

Just thought I’d put another post in supporting Snapper on the Friedkin TF51.It’s seriously ugly.Like Snapper I love Mustangs, but somehow the Friedkin one is doubly ugly for making such a good looking aeroplane look so bad.The paintjob is very unflatterring, and that extended bubble canopy looks horrible. I know the TF’s have to have them, but from the photo’s I’ve seen the one on the Friedkin example is particularly bulbous and ugly. If I had to choose a TF51 for looks I’d go for Crazy Horse or Mad Max anyday.
Having said that,it’s still a Mustang and I’ll still be happy to see and hear it at Legends.

“Ant, you worry too much. Perhaps you should stay in bed longer…..

Go fly a Buchon, then fly a Spit, then come back and give us your wisdom.”

Bertie,I was quoting the words of Ladd Doctor, someone who has actually flown Buchons and a whole host of other warbirds in the US.Bear in mind that of all the surviving Buchons, there is only one that has never had to be rebuilt after a serious accident, either in it’s operational life or as a warbird. One or two examples have had several accidents! This imho is not a good safety record and I would say that it’s only a matter of time before there’s another Buchon groundloop, landing gear collapse etc.I’m not being pessimistic,it’s just what past experience is telling me.

Agreed there Snapper, the TF51’s are possibly the ugliest Mustangs around, and I have to say the Friedkin example is particularly so.Ah well,it makes a nice noise anyway, and it seats two! 🙂

As for the Hastings, she’s a certainty for the new Superhanger extension,so she shouldn’t become a worry in the long term.Shouldn’t think they’ll dangle her from the ceiling either, which is good news!

I think the Hunter you’re talking about was parked out on the far side of the airfield at Legends last year? This is F.6 XF375 owned by OFMC for a long time, and even had a civvy G-reg at one point, but nothing came of it.She’s now in storage at Scampton and up for sale.

What about conversion to supersonic tanker status??Would save the Tornados and Typhoons having to slow down to refuel 😀
