Don’t count out FM212 if The Windsor Lancaster Group have anything to do with it! 🙂

Superb Andrew, thanks mate! 🙂 Where did you get these from?Did you take them yourself??If so I think Damien has some serious competition on his hands.

RE: Why it is so different? Lancaster and Halifax

    Hi folks,
The problem for early Halifaxes was both in terms of engines and aerodynamics. The Merlins fitted to Mk.1 Halibags had only a single stage of supercharging,so thier cieling and altitude performance was rather limited. There were also problems with directional control associated with the small triangular tailfins. The machine would snake at altitude, and it had a propensity to spin viciuosly in a stall if not very carefully handled. This spin was also usually unrecoverable.
These problems were cured by the square fins of later models and the introduction of the Hercules radial,so the Halifax could finally show it’s full potential.

    RE: Aussie Meatbox

Just a point about the RAF’s Canberras. It has to be remembered that these machines are knocking on a bit-most of the pilots who fly them are younger than the machines themselves.Despite this, the old faithful Canberra is still a very useful and well used aircraft. This means that they have to be extremely frugal about the amount of hours they are putting on the aircraft to ensure that they remain operational for as long as possible. The PR.9’s are only flown operationally or for other essential reasons. All type conversion and currency flying etc is done on the non-operational PR.7’s,but the hours on these are getting short aswell. So bascially, they can’t afford to be too generous when it comes to supplying them for display work.
I think it’s great news that Air Atlantique are doing thier 50’s show again.I didn’t manage to get to this event when it was staged before,so fingers crossed I’ll make it to this one.My mouth waters to think of machines that fit the bill for the show-Noratlas,SuperConnie or even the Shackelton.Oh well,we can dream can’t we…??

    RE: 633 Squadron Mosquito’s

    Hi Moggy,
I’m afraid to say that two or three real Mossies were destroyed during filming. The one that crashed into the bowser was a real one,as was the example that belly landed in the middle of the film (not sure if this scene was shot from a different angle and re used in the end sequence). The only models involved were the ones that were shot down, crashed into cliffs etc.
As for Mosquito Squadron being a poor film, that’s quite an understatement!I think it’s probably the worst British war film that’s ever been done. The storyline was pants and the dialogue and special effects were tacky.I could only stand about 10 minutes of it!
It’s a shame they made such a flop considering they had three airworthy Mossies at thier disposal and a whole load of unused footage from 633 Squadron.

    RE: Connie

Sadly, she won’t be doing much flying after her arrival in Holland.A number of her parts are loaned from the people who own the MATS Connie back in Arizona, including the props and three of her engines. These items will be returned to the States and replaced by static parts.Seems a damn shame really, but we can console ourselves with the prospect of the Swiss owned SuperConnie doing the rounds in the years to come.

    RE: Save a Sea Vixen

Is it me or have the people at Brooklands gone stark staringly raving mad????Remove possibly the best static SeaVixen on the planet from display? There are people who would sell members of thier family to have that machine on thier premesis.
With regard to what the owners can do with it,I can think of one or two museums that don’t have a SeaVixen, namely The Museum of Flight at East Fortune and the Science Museum. They could also try the ‘Crash & Smash’ guys to dismantle/transport the machine to wherever she goes. ANYWHERE but the scrapman please!!
    Alas,if I were not so poor…

Know how you feel Philo! My own personal feeling is that the Meteor is in atleast the second best place that it could be.The RAAF flew the Meteor into action in Korea despite being outclassed by the MiG15’s of the Communist forces. The colour scheme ‘Winston’ now wears actually represents a Meteor called ‘Halestorm’,flown by SqnLdr Goerge Hale.He actually managed to down a MiG in this machine, quite a feat! The RAAF Meteors in general flew a very tough war out there in Korea,so it’s fitting that there should be an airworthy example in Auz.Afterall,we weren’t seeing much of her while she was over here. 🙁

    RE: One for lancman

    Hi Peter,
I’ve been informed that FM212’s ailerons have already been put back in place,so this is good news for her general appearance.
I know she does get an annual airing, but this really isn’t enough. In the long term, the elements will win and the Lanc will end up in poor state no matter what you do.It’s got to be brought indoors. All it would take is one serious storm to cause serious structural damage or even tear her off the perch completely. Not good.
Added to this, there are already concerns about the condition of one or two of the engine bearers, one of them showing obvious cracks.I did mention this in a letter I wrote to the Windsor authorities, and pointed out that if an engine fell it could seriously injure members of the public, but I’ve had no reply from them.

    Hi Phantom,
Some good pics, thanks for posting them. Am I right in thinking that only the later rocket-armed versions were named Starfire? I read something recently about F94 nightfighters in Korea.I was surprised to learn that one of these actually shot down a Po-2 (or even more than one?) on a night time interception.Must’ve been a pretty well harmonised crew to pull that off!
I notice the aircraft in the pictures have varying nose profiles-how many differnt types of radar set did the type use??

    RE: Aussie Meatbox

    Hi Wombat,
I’ve no intention of belittling the efforts of Australia or the other Commonwealth/Dominion countries. My point is that if Britain had folded, there would have been nowhere from which to operate against Nazi Occupied Europe. It’s less a question of what went on on the battlefield or in the air,and more to do with what happened on the home front and in politics. The fact that Churchill and the British people decided not to surrender enabled there to be a BattleOfBritain,D-Day etc.It came EXTREMELY close to Britain making an agreed peace with Nazi Germany at the time of thier conquest of France. There were many such as Chaimberlin,Lord Halifax and Loyd-George who all wished to avoid further bloodshed and arrange terms with Germany. It was only the resolve and character of Churchill and his supporters that stopped this from happening. There wouldn’t have needed to be an invasion, the Nazis would have strolled right in.
So I would say that Britain stood alone in the sense that it’s people and it’s leader held it’s future in thier hands and, perhaps inadvertantly, the future of Europe and perhaps the world.

Thanks for the pictures, looks like they’ve got quite a job ahead of them.Makes you realise what a state a machine get into when you stick it out on a pole for a couple of decades.
I’ve been in touch with Ed Curnette of The Windsor Lancaster Group who’ve been trying to persuede the authorities to remove FM212 from it’s display plinth in Jackson Park,Windsor,Ontario. The group have run into problems because of opposition to the move, the majority of people seemingly thinking that it looks nice where it is. Frustratingly, many of these folks are also veterans, and as they are not pushing for the machine to be restored, there she sits. It’s quite surprising how many people don’t realise just how inadvisable it is to keep a Lanc on a perch.

I agree with Roger,it definately looks like an Airspeed Ambassador, and it looks like it belongs to BEA judging by the colour scheme.
    Nice picture…;)

    RE: Aussie Meatbox

    Hi folks,
I do see Ja’s point about Britain not standing alone, but I only agree with it to some extent.Whilst it’s true that Britain survived through aid from the US,personnel from the Empire etc,it has to be appreciated that the situation was still pretty grim.
Britain was alone in the sense that it was the only European power facing the Third Riech, and all the other countries at war with Germany in 1940-41 were British colonies and Dominions.Without Britain, there would not have been any opposition at all to Nazi Germany, and it’s difficult to see how any other countries could have later become involved if Britain had folded early on.
