Excellent and very interesting pics Von P,thanks for those, they bring back memories.Biggin ’92 was only the second airshow I ever attended (first was Abingdon ’90).I rememebr seeing the three Doug Arnold Spits, even then I knew how rare it was to see them all together (am I right in thinking this was actually the ONLY time all three took part in a display??).Was great to see the Fort and the Lib in the air together aswell,I’m very glad I made it to Biggin that year.
Have to say I don’t remember the Shuttleworth Hind taking part, did she go tech??
I’ve got some decent pics my brother took, although sadly I don’t have a scanner at the mo. 🙁

Happy birthday by the way Von P! 🙂

On the whole I think Legends is great, but one thing I would perhaps change is the length of the display. In a previous thread Kev said he wished teh display would go on longer, and I have to say I agree. That’s not to say I think there aren’t enough aircraft, just that the pace of the show is ratehr quick. There’s often a hell of alot going on,with something taxiing and doing engine runs in front of you whilst something else is displaying.I reckon I probably miss about 25% of the actual flying display because of the ‘distraction’ of taxiing aircraft. If there were slightly longer gaps between displays, perhaps it would give us a better chance to appreciate everything.
    Just my tuppence worth…

I dunno about examples in the UK,but I think the HS.748 that used to be used by the Belgian AF as a VIP transport has been earmarked for preservation.

Yep,the MiG-3’s progressing nicely in Russia. It’s being built up using parts recovered from various locations, the engine they’ll be using was dragged up from the bottom of a frozen lake a couple of years ago and other parts have come from crash sites.Doesn’t sound too promising on the face of it,but there was a good article about it in Aeroplane a month or two ago and it’s looking great, the engine in particular was in remarkable nick.
I can’t really pick a ‘most anticipated’ restoration project,I’m glad to see anything come out of a workshop and take to the air again.
Just for the sake of being a bit different,I’ll go for the Auster Agricola that was imported from New Zealand a couple of years ago.
The Walrus is another I’d love too see-what about Shuttleworth taking her on?I have to admit I don’t see the sense in the Shuttleworth guys messing about with a Bucker Jungmann when there’s a Walrus out there in need of a good home.

    Ok,here’s my tuppence-worth…
Sticking with the Commonwealth theme AND the idea of depicting a machine which failed to return, how about RA542 “JO-Z” of 463Sqn RAAF. She was lost in a raid on an oil refinery at Vallo in Norway on April 26th 1945,making her (it’s said) the last Lanc to be lost in action over Europe.
For those who would like to see her as PO-S, the good news is that RA542’s markings were almost identical, with red code letters outlined in yellow, with the code letter repeated on each fin.She appears to have had colourful (and unoffensive!) nose-art too.
Perhaps it’s possible to please everybody afterall. 🙂

    Hi RobAnt,
Think of a large,greedy,yellow-headed seabird that dives into the water from a great hieght. Then, think of an ugly brute of an aeroplane and add it to the aforementioned seabird.
Alternatively you could look at the ‘Static’ list at the bottom of the participants page. 😀 😉

“One of the saddest, due to its rarity, must be the Swift F4 WK275 at Upper Hill, Hereford & Worcestershire. A pity Duxford can’t acquire it

See Damien B’s excellent ‘Thunder and Lightnings’ site for more info”

I have to agree it’s sad to see this one still sitting there. It’s not in as bad nick as you might think, but it’s not exactly brilliant either. Some areas of it are remarkably good, but others are more worrying.I had a very good look over her last August and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how well she has survived considering the fact that she’s almost entirelly unpainted (there isn’t even any interior primer),there’s just some poorly applied light blue paint on her belly, and even that’s worn through in many places. She’s also very complete, which makes her quite a sound candidate for restoration.I have some piccies which Plazz took of her earlier last year, but I’ll leave it to him to post ’em up just in case.
I got in touch with the guys at the Southampton Hall of Aviation in the hope that they might try (again) to get hold of the aircraft. They did, about the fifth time they’ve tried to negotiate a deal on her, but the owner simply isn’t willing to sell. It’s a terrible shame because she will go from sound restoration candidate to sound scrapping candidate in just a few years.I wouldn’t fancy her chances of surviving for even just another five years.

    Excellent pics,thanks guys.Keep ’em coming!

“Somehow, it looks sleeker and more purposeful with the skid (obviously impractical though)”

I agree she looked better with the skid, but i’m wondering if a skid would actually be quite practical.Considering that OW is a grass strip, would the skid not be an advantage when it came to preventing ground-loops and the like?I’ve always been under the impression that a skid helps to keep enerything pointing in the right direction.

“She was then stored for a number of years before her restoration commenced. She wasn’t really derelict or indeed a basket case. She did still contain a very substancial amount of her original structure.”

Hmmmm and hmmmmm again.I bow to your superior knowledge David,I’d been told she’d been stripped before suspension and then had suffered badly during her time in storage,so had had to have the majority of her structure replaced when rebuilt.

“It’s worth pointing out that she wasn’t really designed for the type of flight she is now being asked to do. As a long range racer she does have handling characteristics which are not that benign. Having spoken at length to one of her former pilots I can understand those who would wish her to be retired from flight.”

I can’t really comment on this, but there was a letter written by one of her former pilots published in Aeroplane, which criticised Shuttleworth for trying to operate ACSS from the OW strip. Andy Sephton wrote a pretty comprehensive response which seemed to me to be pretty sound.I’ll try and dig it out,but I can’t garauntee I’ll find it…

*goes off to dig his way through mountains of back-issues…*
