This afternoon with David Niven court marshalled for ‘borrowing’ army money.
Nicely done.
That is a fine fine film, perfect for a damp Thursday afternoon viewing.
BSG-75Went to see ‘The Road’ a couple of days ago.
Just released, it is set in a post-apocalyptic world ( cause unstated ) in which the sky is permanently grey and full of ash, no crops can grow, and most wildlife has died.
Society has broken down entirely, as the narrative follows the journey of a father and 10 year old son as they try to head south across the USA, to somewhere warmer.
Dressed in rags, foraging for food, they are in permanent fear of cannibalistic gangs who survive on human flesh. Misery is heaped on horror, in a hopeless desolate world.
Utterly dispiriting, it will leave you drained and despairing.
I just came in from seeing this, your last sentence sums it up, but it was a very well made film, close to the book (with a few bits cut…. say no more…) It seems better than the other post-apocalyptic movie “Book of Ely” could be, and what about that fantastic line from Robert Duval ?
“do you ever think about wanting to die?”
“you can’t wish for luxuries at a time like this”.

I know, I caught a bit of the second one on Sci-Fi a while back and it was God-awful. However, the third one is meant to be quite good (by comparison!).
Anyway, I’ve not long watched Star Trek again….!
Third one is “less bad” than the second, the sky marshall boy band bit is funny, but the effects are pants.
As for Star Trek, I think its cracking, saw it twice at the cinema and twice since I got the blu-ray, my nipper still giggles at the:
“puny human can’t speak, what are you trying to say?”

BSG-75Did you notice that when the X-thingy crashes at the end, demolishing the village (killing several hundred puppets) that all the houses were made of Lego……………er……..not that I watched it of course.
There is a documentary that floats around BBC 3 about the guys who did the effects in a warehouse in Staines. A real “British” set up, the junior sent down to Woolies to buy 100 Airfix kits to break and use for “creation”.
If you watch the TV episodes (and other Jerry Anderson shows) you can play spot the aircraft. There is a secret fighter based on a Mirage, in UFO the moon shuttle (IIRC) is part F-86, hours of fun!
Oddly enough, the movie flopped and pretty much killed the show off. Its a classic, my son watched it with me, and still has the toys.

As the war ground on, so despondent was he over the state of the country that he considered killing his family with an overdose of sleeping pills in the event that Japan lost.
Hiroshima bombing
Yamaguchi lived and worked in Nagasaki, but in the summer of 1945 he went to Hiroshima on a business trip.On 6 August he was preparing to leave after three months in the city. At 8:15 he was making his way towards the docks when the American bomber Enola Gay dropped the Little Boy atomic bomb near the centre of the city, only 3 km away.The resulting explosion ruptured his eardrums, blinded him temporarily, and left him with serious burns over the left side of the top half of his body. Along with some colleagues he spent a night in an air-raid shelter before returning to Nagasaki the following day.In Nagasaki he received treatment for his wounds, and despite being heavily bandaged he reported for work on 9 August.

His workplace again put him 3 km from ground zero, but this time he was unhurt by the explosion.[2] However, he was unable to seek treatment for his now ruined bandages, and suffered from a high fever for over a week
