I’m reading “Suez 1956 – the story of the first oil war” now – not got as far as the attack yet, but I recall even at “O” level history being taught that the French AF used Israel bases for the F-84’s while the Uk used RN aircraft and Cyprus (off thread…. a long way, but Hunters would have the range?) & Malta for Canberra’s etc.

Good book BTW – very readable like Anthony Beevor etc.

There will always be an element of that I agree – it gets all American and OTT, Oscars are a sham anyway IMHO (Shawshank Redemption anybody?) and best actor for a comic strip role is not my idea of what it should be – that said, if you can enjoy a Batman film, I would say that as above, this guy just steals it and looks utterly, totally barking mad.

I’ve a lot of time for Harris, think he was badly treated by the powers that be then, and historians since, but he did seem to have a blind spot when it came to supporting the UK lifelines.

I agree – there was a marvelous passage in “Nemesis” by Max Hastings about Harris and other leaders who have been judged in such a way (Curtis Le May as well) – lent the book out now so don’t have it to hand, its a good read BTW, went along the lines of Churchill especially, and Roosevelt both sacked military leaders on a regular basis and if there was any hint of unhappiness from the leaders on the bombing policy, then they would have been replaced at a whim.

As for the “20 times the damage” theory – it doesn’t hold out in such black and white terms, interesting point but the argument would be stronger with some maths.

I think from this you can deduce two things.

1) It was not restored/replicated/re-engineered/re-created etc to original works specification.

2) In consequence it will be relatively easy to repair.

In my total ignorance, I never even knew there was a Hampden intact, it says here that it made a flight post restoration ? Read down to the end, if this is the case the rebuild must have been substantial? :confused:
