Tempest is the BEST!

I like the V better than the Tempest II but nonetheless. Sea Fury? That’s not a Tempest!!!! :eek::diablo:

I’m with you – still, getting a Sabre engine running would be a challenge – I know there is work in progress – I’d love to see a Mk V in the air….

Try as I might I can’t think of any ‘National Body’ that would be interested in putting a roof over the last survivor of an undistinguished 1950s aircraft.

its that word “undestinguished” that hurts the notion – can’t see any non aviation fans heading to Duxford or anywhere to see a (for arguments sake) flying or preserved Beverly – they may be persuaded to go for a Spitfire, Vulcan or even as Mrs MSG says those Harriers ‘cos they dance…… it is (like many other preserved aircraft) a “niche” almost – I agree on the science musuem notion as well.

Other threads have asked how much interest would there be in restoring/recovering a Botha (first that came to mind – not a direct comparison I admit) we live in a world of short attention spans and soundbites, an odd looking fixed undercarrage aircraft isn’t sexy enough for a soundbite on the news….

interesting – there is a great piece in the last IAPR about Lancasters and Lincolns in Argentinian service.

can’t see the Swedish buying what is an out and out offensive platform, even for electronic warefare, lots of easier airframes to cram black boxes in?

I did read somewhere about Argentina looking at a mid to late 70’s purchase of ex RAF Vulcans? will have a dig around and see if I can find it….

My first was a Short Stirling inside a transparent globule of epoxy (at least thats how it turned out).

funny that – we have an Su-27 in the kitchen just like that – 3 million years time, somebody will dig one up and mess up their theory of evolution and it will be in musuem.

am tempted to try something bigger, then again di-casts look better, last longer, bit of a cheat I guess…. now if I could find a BIG Tempest….. 1/48th…I’d try again

After re-reading your OP, I actually think the “Plastic model” documentary would be a good idea.

Most boys have had at least one attempt at glueing those together, and attampted to paint eye brows on a 1/72 pilot.

🙂 just laughed out loud, first time all day ! – am doing some kits with my son at the moment, just a 1/72 scale tempest for me (first kit in…. ooo, 20 odd years) remembering how much better an airbrush is, then again I did leave the black outline of a 1/32 scale lysander wing on my bedroom carpet when I was a lad with spray pain ! BSG Junior is doing a Su-27 – and yes, there is a bonding (no pun intended) with it, I can still remember my first kit at his age (8) a Gnat, did it with my brother who did a P-40. Very vivid childhood memories, a bond with my son, so, yes, I’d go with this idea – bet you would find somebody at the local hospital with a Spitfire canopy glued to their hair or something ?

good news the pilot is OK, and its well away from the UK red tops so there will be no slow news day headlines about “ancient aircraft plunging from the skies”……

it will be rebuilt – in time no doubt….

Do you have a death wish or something. As long as it’s a cheap disposal, I couldn’t care less, whether I’m chucked on the runway at DX, bunged into the firebox of an A-4 Pacific or shot into space, it ain’t going to bring me back is it.

not at all mate – lost my dad not too long ago, he was a steam train buff (I know,but you can’t choose your parents….he thought I was odd about aircraft;)) and we had to hunt around to dispose of his bits and pieces to be able to pass the money from them to the hospice where he spent his last few weeks. Nothing for gain, just get a good price to pass onto a very worthy cause.

been reflecting on it a bit, coming up to the anniversary of him falling ill and I’d like to be able to point people in my will where my bits and bobs can bring some benefit to the hobby or past time that we all love. Hopefully, a long way off but I’d hate to see my things being sold at a church jumble when a rare book could for example, raise some cash for a museum trying to raise funds.

Just make sure you do something with the jar.
My mate was taking his dog for a walk on !!!!!! beach very early last sunday morning and came across a washed up canister. Thinking it might be chemicals or explosives or whatever, he peered at the lid to find it inscribed with the name of a certain local Crematorium followed by some late gentlemans name.
Taking a chance he unscrewed the lid prior to taking it to the local police station, only to find it full of stones, it was obviously intended to follow it’s occupants mortal remains into the waves, but such is the power of the sea!!
So where to you want to be tipped out then, is this a service that DX provide, have you checked with them before making your will, when that container gets opened, there ain’t much left, and I can’t think of many cinder paths around DX that would accomodate it.
Lets not be morbid and look forward to a good, schoolkid friendly day out on Friday, with a lot of imput from our mates in the USAF.

I’m only 42 – made the will to make sure the nippers are taken care of, will make more “formal” enquiries hopefully a few years in the future !

anywhere on the flightline would be nice – that said, I’ll be past caring so if I get tipped out behind a hanger I can come back and haunt it – maybe stop the Beaufighter from being shipped out !:diablo:

I have two children, 4 & 8, my son is 8 and old enough to enjoy places like Duxford and speaking as a parent with two young children that would end up costing near adult prices for both of them at some “family” parks around the M-25 etc, Duxfords price is, I think fair, and good value – especially with the policy on child entry.

I once had to list my 3 favourite places for a school project BSG junior was doing, Duxford was there and its even in my will to ask if they will have my ashes scattered there.

I like it, a lot !

Don’t forget there is an intact (and rust free) WW2 bomber on the moon according to one Sunday newspaper – get that first surely?

Can’t think why I couldn’t re-locate my post this am before any of you were up. I wrote it after 3 Scotches & wished to withdraw it. Bad comparisons to boot.

But, speaking soberly & without sentiment I still believe that, whatever the action, it was not a selfless attempt to save ones comrades or a just cause.

I’m sorry – when I was on fire, I got out. PDQ!! And I’m not ashamed.

Its a good point, and given that I’ve read other documentation about awards (don’t recall the name, but a wounded bomber pilot who stayed at the controls) and the paperwork indicated an “element of self preservation” in staying at the controls….. there is an inequality to medal awards however given. Fairey Battle, France 1940, 3 crew, 2 medals – maybe we are looking with 21st century eyes, James Nicolsons aware may have had a propaganda element to it, who knows. good debate though…

I’m not trying to question the aware of any medal to anybody being shot at at all – but looking back with perfect hind sight, there do seem to be some , “unequal” awards?

IIRC at least 3 were evaluated by RAF/Air Ministry and maybe 1 or 2 more were ‘borrowed’ from USAAF Units

Also don’t forget that one of the most decorated/brave pilots in the RAF was killed flying one

Guy Gibson flew one on ops as well as a target marker but RAF Museum funds for this do seem a bit odd when other, far more relevent airframes are not represented at all, and others are slowly decaying. If there is a set plan to recover and exchange (for a flying Tempest V:diablo:) or something else relevent than OK, but I just don’t see this as within the RAFM’s “remit”
