Don’t get me started on the workplace…… I’ve noticed interviews with the early 20 set is worse and worse….. a classic reply to “what can your bring to the team?” type question “well, if I get through the day without loosing my temper its a good day as my family all have short fuses” – or my personal best…. I work for a large Japanese electronics company with 4 letters in the name….. we get to the Q&A at the end of an interview, first question from himself “whats it like working for the Japanese? I don’t like them funny little blokes”…….:eek: No lie, no exageration, word for word…. still, another 18 years and I can retire, after I end up working for HIM….!:(

My son is 22 now and at Uni doing his finals. Possibly due to me, well parents can have influence if they try hard enough, he was an all action kid, Airfix models, scouting, everything you wanted your kid to be, but at the same time he was ‘cool’, he managed to combine childhood with Eminem, he was never forced into being something he didn’t want to be, I’m very proud of the fact that he is the only western true Masai warrior.
On the other hand our other youth, who was 14 last week, has never shown any interest in model making or whatever, he’s just obsessed with heavy metal music and girls.He’s a nice kid, but where will this go.
I told him last week that when I had my 14th birthday, my presents consisted of Hornby Dublo stuff, it’s a different life we have to face isn’t it.
My eldest is 8, we’ve done a few kits and I held out on the Nintendo for 3 years from the first request – and he has it 30mins AFTER homework and reading. Generally, kids don’t play outside now which is a route cause. At 8, I could play out of sight of the house, so long as I was with others and didn’t go beyond set boundaries. Kids now spend the time in doors, or being shuttled from play date to play centre to play date to swap games and play with two dimensional people! Whats worse we (well me at 42) are starting to sound like our parents and I have a stark realisation that my parents just may have been right after all !:eek: My son does a few star wars kits, we’ve done a few aircraft on rainy days, I used the star wars ones as bait, then we bought a ME262 home from legends last year, and he wants “baddy jets” – so we have an SU-27 set for the w/e – we’ll get there….

Sprawling Basingstoke has a Model Zone, good choices and silly price cuts on a regular basis on die-cast and plastic scale models. We also have an Entertainer that is a bit grim, and a souless Toys are us. Toys and playing seem not be as valued anymore…. As for Corgi, can only speak from experience collecting die-cast and they have struggled a while meeting timescales and they have serious competition now from Hobbymaster and others. At least that filters down to price cuts at times….

Just read this on Popham’s own website….
2008 Microlight Trade Fair & Aero/Auto Jumble postponed.
Due to the amount of rainfall over the last few days, Popham Airfield is totally waterlogged and the current forecasts predict that it will NOT dry out before the weekend. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused but will unfortunately now have to postpone the entire event where we will re-schedule it, probably with a normal fly-in.
More news on the re-scheduled date will follow here as we have it.
Anyone that does still intend to fly-in will get a free landing but with the current rain please check beforehand as the field may still be too wet to use even for aircraft!
A shame, especially as I have spent the last week preparing for it, but I’m sure Dick will be able to re-arrange it eventually.
its a shame, but it did rain last year which put a “dampner” on it, its usually a great day out, have been ever since my son could walk, always spend too much….

you lucky, lucky b******* ! – well done! , I was able to sit in one the F-6’s during one of the open days a few years back – I’m 5 ft 8 and was cramped in there, what its like in a g-suit etc is anybodies guess. That Bucc looks fantastic though….

I have the vaguest memory (how true:D ) of reading somewhere that the larger aircraft i.e. Dakota, Gliders and their tugs had the stripes applied with yard brooms so I would think acuracy wouldnot have been very high on the list of priorities.
It may be in one of the Spitfire at war ian allen books, I’ve seen pictures of a MK VII Spitfire close up to show shrapnel damage, the D-day strips look like my kids did them….. I guess June 5th 1944, erks, brushes, fading day light, can’t seem the with slide rules and masking tape……… maybe I’ll add that Mark VII to the best looking spitfire thread….

I have the Airfix 1/48th kit, and the old Matchbox 1/32 still to be done. No prizes for guessing which scheme they’ll both get!
Those big Matchboxes were great, I had the Dauntless, Spit, Venom and Lysander – all died a sad death as all plastic kits (well, mine did) as the glue dried etc.
Di-cast (cheat) for me now, other than a few rainy day plastics with my son… but you just reminded me of those, the Dauntless was great (just seen a di-cast 1/32 one of those as well)

Family Holiday to Babbacombe in the early 70’s – I was 8 or so, and that was my first museum, my old mum has a picture or two somewhere I’m sure (film was expensive you know and we didn’t take many….;) ) I remember the Hurricane and Provost especially and oddly enough was thinking about this a few days back.
seems that most things survived…..but it was a happy childhood flashback to read the thread.
BSG-75BSG- The aircraft are part of a long established collection. Bought with funds raised by volunteers . The fence surrounding the site is establishes the museum boundaries in the same way as the fences surrounding Duxford and Hendon. The museum hours are clearly displayed and certainly every time I have visited at weekends to talk to the volunteers I have found them approachable .
They have their ideas on how to preserve aircraft. Suffice to say that without their foresight the likes of the Sea Prince C.1 would be extinct . Similarily other aircraft were rescued from a similar fate. The best thing to do
is to visit when the museum is open and have a chat.
I know, I have done several times in the past, I was trying to set a tone of how the aircraft are, the site is well known and often visited out of hours for want of a better phrase and I don’t want to re-start the emotional postings, I see both sides and appreciate that if they were not there, the aircraft may well be frying pans by now. That said, there may be a chance to restore, save, relocate to somewhere more suitable than very damp ankle deep grass.
The impression I get from above, is that offers of help may have been declined, I’ve not seen or heard directly so can’t say – that seems to be the direction of some posts.
Would Hendon decline an offer to spruce up the Halifax? (don’t tell me they have……;) )its all a tad emotional so other than to say I offered to take some pictures for some members and I posted them, I’ll say no more !

Given that I’m happy to moan at places at Duxford (!) – I didn’t want to make any comment when I posted (eventually:eek: ) the images.
I went over there last night, about 4:45, the road along side Lasham is busy at that time with “rat run” commuters but the site was deserted and easy to access
I can’t decide, are they preserved, abandoned, or having a stay of execution?
I’d like to think that the owner is realistic and feels that if (for example) a working museum could take one in long term, perhaps even in exchange for something “disposable” if such a word can be applied….. even a replica Spit etc?
either way, it was a little sad to see and I hope that something can one day be worked out for them…..

I recall seeing years ago a TV movie about Howard Huges. P-38 for the XF-11, Harvards for everything else! The Aviator is a tad flakey at places but I think a good movie with the aviation scenes well researched – and I’m a self cinfessed nit picking whinger at times! As for Leonardo, he can act and suffers for being a “pretty boy” – going off thread a lot, he is good in Blood Diamond as well.
I’ve heard rumours that part 2 of the aviator will be made, I guess less aircraft and more toilet roll as Hughes goes totally wibble….:eek:
