It is…

If that is Elmdon in the background then that’s probably Blackburn Firebrand T.F. Mk. VA, serial EK621, taking part in the 1949 National Air Races. Strongly suspect the Beaufort pic was taken at the same venue, which may identify the silver monoplane to the left as Miles Hawk Trainer as G-AHNV. The aircraft to the right of the B/Fort could be Hawker Sea Fury T.20 VX280. My sources of information are (a) some possibly dodgy assumptions mixed with even dodgier eyesight, and (b) Putnams ‘British Racing and Record Breaking Aircraft’, a treasure trove of information for those who like treasure troves of information.:D

Just found it in wings of fame, two piccies of the Firebrand with the racing number, b***** awful aircraft by all accounts !

Mustang, the final variants are the pinacle of piston engine fighter design – one wonders though if Supermarine should have tried building the Spiteful / Seafang earlier, maybe in place of the final Spitfire marks.

late marks had the Griffon which had a cubic capacity something like one third greater than a merlin, in essentially the same airframe with developed rudder etc – without the Griffon versions the spit would have dropped off the radar a fair few years earlier and there is an argument that says the name should have changed with the engine change, but skip the 21,22 & 24 and go straight to Spiteful is an idea – still overtaken by the jet though, whatever way you look at it.

Its not bad at all, service aircraft collection wise it must be THE collection and it must be seen. What lets it down (I haven’t been for 3 years now mind) is the stale atmosphere, poor lighting, official feel of the place, and yes some dust.
You must visit though, there are some truely unique sights there, especially the German and RAF WWII collection.
Is entry now free? If so there is no good reason not to go!

Its free, I think that they do suffer from funding issues which means some galleries etc are sometimes closed, staffing, maintenance etc, but for all of my chuntering – yes, its well worth a visit to see some lovely aircraft, intact, indoors

Just as a side issue, that cockpit even without seats etc is not exactly big, how many crew crammed in there? Add instruments, seats, flying suits, guns….. not for the feint hearted who like their space is it!!?? Lovely work though, I guess there are these, Hendon and not many other 88’s…

Aaah, lovely, a pencil with wings. I hope it stays here in Britian because we don’t have any starfighters here do we ? (correct me if im wrong please).
Beautiful, well i say beautiful but when i think of all the deaths, somewhat over 100 luftwaffe pilots makes it a Beautiful death trap/machine.

there is one in deepest, darkest hampshire – at Lasham Airfield at the second world war preservation society, I think its been debated on here, it opens up the whole debate on if its preserved simply because its not been scrapped, or is slowly rotting in a field! – Its 30 mins off the M3 if you are ever down this way, its literally parked on grass with some meteors, a hunter, and a few others that escape me now

with a Kings Cup racing number – seems you have a small treasure trove…. there are specialists who transfer negs to CD’s now, depends on your budget I guess…congrats on the find though

lovely stuff, I’ve seen A4 sized reproductions in shops and museums, often with very un PC car ads from the 70’s (models holding gear sticks in MG’s etc) that have aged more than these 30’s & 40’s ads !

I saw a wonderful Hawker Tempest one at Bournemouth which I forgot to go back and buy:( muppet…:mad: still, will see it again one day !

Don’t knock it, the Hunter proved to be a great aircraft, there must have been air assimilation tests between Hunters and F-86’s, anyone aware of this and have results.

last issue with the Hunter feature, Hunter had better growth potential (not used?) more stable gun platform, could do rapid scramble and climb, a lot more in the volume than I can copy down here, including Indian-Pakistan wars and I’ve also read about Hunters giving Israeli Mirage III’s a hard time.

maybe you are right Pagen…

How come you sometimes turn your threads into this Duxford F-14 debate?
I can’t see that it would be a particulary relevent exhibit in a British museum it being a type that had very little to do with these shores.
Don’t get me wrong, I like F-14s and loved their airshow appearences, it would even be nice to see one on display, but I just don’t see it as type desperately required over more relevant aircraft by a UK collection.
If Duxford did actually turn down one which was offered, I’m sure it would have been for a very good reason.
It certainly isn’t a type for Cosford.

maybe its because somebody else got the Chinese Stirling wave going before me !? Cosford, Duxford, my front garden… would just love to see one here but you are right, there are others more pressing, but hey, the wife won’t listen to me so let me have my occasional rants on here:diablo:

Turned down an F-14? 😮 thats sacrilege if said rumour is true. Suppose an F-14 goes with the naval theme we’ve got going on down here in Yeovs, I for one would love one of them down here.

I love Duxford, but I mailed them to ask if they were having one when they were pulled out of USN service, and they said no, nowhere to put it and they didn’t want it left out to rot. The F-15 is on loan so not an issue…… have heard in many places since that IWM turned down an offer. If not Duxford, surely at Cosford….. nit picking or what, but if we had a forum bet on if a Jetstream or F-14 was a “cold war” aircraft I know where my money is. Hey ho, I’m ranting, Cosford & Duxford are top notch places so I’ll just wait until Duxford start on the F-105 !!

I was in there today as well

it is a very well put together exhibit, the castrol artwork looks very authentic and its worth a look.
