    Supplied before the conflict…..and (more) embargoed during it! 😉

    and it’s not like the French are or were the only nation selling weapons….. :rolleyes:they did provide Mirage III for DACT missions with the RAF and FAA as well before the task force set sail, so yes, the French are indeed the French and on occasion fodder for the red top papers, they were not the pantomine villans the Daily Express would have us believe either.

    Interesting thread…. I had a 2 hour drive Monday to Wales and listened to the phone ins on the BBC. General view was that there was no middle ground, and people were in the love/hate bands.

    I was generally “Pro” Mrs T, and still think if she had her time again she would be voted in again on sheer strength of personality and the fact that, she DID something and spoke her mind.

    However, I was pulled toward the non-existant “Middle” ground the more I listened, and while I abhor the “death parties” etc, I do think that the funeral is inappropriate and does show that the government is misreading the public.

    There were many with a genuine grievance against the policies and outcomes who will object to the funeral in that format, and I understand and in fact support that view. She was made a Baroness in recognition for her service, that should, IMHO suffice.

    as a society we lack “Great statesmen/women” in large, thanks to the media coverage (would Churchill win an election today once his drinking and smoking was made public? ) this quote from an old sci fi show sums that up :

    “Greatness is never appreciated in youth, called pride in midlife, dismissed in old age and reconsidered in death. Because we cannot tolerate greatness in our midst we do all that we can to destroy it.”

    strong willed/stubborn – which ever way you word it, whatever your view point and she certainly polarised opinion…. I think she would be voted back in today given the weakness in the current crop of potential leaders.

    As Blair did later, she stayed in power too long and began to enjoy the power rather than do the job, but she was strong, she was forthright, and one of the best I can remember in my lifetime.

    I enjoyed the Jonathan Dimbleby “Road to El Alamein” from last week, very well made I think and enjoyable, not dumbed down like so many documentaries seem to be (or crammed into 30 min timeslots – the BBC will have Ant & Dec doing Panorama at the rate they are going….. :mad::eek:)

    Did the RAF fly Phantoms in GW1?

    Not in theatre no, 19 sqn was in Cyprus at the time in case of increased tension and they did some “aggressor” training excercises with the US Navy en-route through the Med.

    I’d never heard of that, so a quick google caused me 15 minutes amusement over my morning Coffee.

    Same here !:eek::D

    Then I looked at Rendlesham Forest ….. that “holds more water” as an incident IMHO, but whenever I read it, my pet theory about a USAF aircraft dropping an exernal store and the whole thing being a clear up operation comes to mind. Would they rather have folk ranting about UFO’s or asking how much plutonium is left scattered around…. ?

    Agent Mulder…… where are you when we need you ???

    Les Chevaliers du Ciel

    if anybody remembers “the aeronauts” from the 70’s, its an updated film about two two Mirage 2000 pilots who save France from the bad guys.

    Think Top Gun in French, with a worse plot, but some amazing Mirage 2000 air to air and not a lot of CGI work.
