Wind turbines – how much fossil fuel saving and cost savings in energy to who?

Wind turbines – how much fossil fuel saving and cost savings in energy to who?

You don’t require the pain of completing a BA (Hons) Accounting to work out that anything moving (a whacking great propellor and a generator) have many moving parts. These wear out, fracture, break, etc.

Aha it’s up a very high pole sometimes in the middle of oceans. There’s a force 10 or higher gale blowing, low power or no power supply to some areas. How on earth do we fix them?

Simple, Ah we have a few helicopters (as yet fossil fuel burning) and paying the skilled engineers (all the enhanced risk rates, anti social working rates) to do their stuff – Cost, Cost, Cost
Oh propellors beyond repair , new one required, never mind we’ll heli it in. Cost, Cost, Cost

No one has done the simple maths of in 4 years or sooner the cost of maintenance will be passed on to the consumer, who else and this escalating maintenance cost will have far exceeded the already astronomical cost of putting the unsightly things in.

God help the minds of numpties who think wind farms and wave machines (some scientist from Edinburgh I must shamefully admit) surrounding and scattered around a beautiful Britain – mad Heath Robinson ideas permitted to spend ridiculous sums of money only to finally cripple the consumer – you – me.

Aliens must look down from space and say “Those earthlings are getting prepared for another sea invasion of Britain from Europe they are bolstering up their coastal defences”:D

Hey I do need that Kevlar vest if I carry a gambling chit- its the Lincoln Strangler

Jay. re thread 58, why did you feel you had to mention you were a slightly darker shade than pale. We don’t mind what colour you are on this forum. The only requirement is, to have a discussion, and a passionate sence of humour. If I thought you were playing the race card, I would strangle you.;)

Hey I do need that Kevlar neck high vest if I carry a gambling chit- its the Lincoln Strangler that’s after me.:D
Gambling chit – ‘race card’ 😉

I have from my childhood days schooled with, dined with, enjoyed sport and travelled all over the globe with many cultures (long before bl..dy political correctness frowned on Alf Garnet, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Monty Python, Noddy & Big Ears, etc – most of my favourites in fact) so I have absolutely no problem amongst friends in e.g. rowing/rugby clubs being told something like “Come on you bl.ck b.st.rd drink up, you’re behind with the rounds” to which I ‘d retort quite regularly “Okay so you w.ite b.gg.rs have hollow legs not my fault”.
That’s me never ashamed of my appearance but sometimes especially up in Scotland it is still something that one as a “brownie” becomes quickly aware of, of being like a ‘specimen in a zoo or glass cage’ ( gawped at ) – with the silent but unsaid expression in their minds “What’s he doing here, another b.oody immigrant” .
To be honest I preferred the pre political correct days e.g. when I first came as a schoolboy to London and would try to get ‘digs’, and some windows would say “No blacks or browns”. Yet others would not have a sign and my English accent does not betray that I may not be white when telephoning to enquire. They would say “Yes sure come round and have a look”. I’d get there and sometimes without even letting me in the door they’d say “Oh sorry it’s gone”.
This went on a few times and I asked a “white” work colleague to help me. I telephoned, he went to the door, and of course they’d show him round, blah de blah “When would you like to move in…..”.
I run round a few seconds later and although my friend had said he wasn’t interested I usually would not get past the door, “It’s gone”.

Each person in their hearts carries all kinds of likes, dislikes, prejudices and legislation does not change this in any form. In fact democracy permits each individual to have preferences including prejudices, what democracy has to draw the line on is when prejudice comes in the way of working relationships (hence essential screening of new recruit against team/s’ composition) or social behaviour (ie victimising, insulting or violence based on race, religion, colour.etc). Likewise most sensible humans are discerning about a choice of partner or who they marry and may exclude some races – that is choice rather than prejudice.

Political correctness has legally suppressed (to often negative consequences) supposed racial prejudice but inside the hearts and minds of racially biased people the hatred has simply magnified. They have no way of expressing their feelings without risking the heavy hand of the law. So instead you have serious “back stabbing” especially in workplaces making the minorities working life almost a living hell.

I do best working in small teams where I am just one of the boys in a team of boys and girls.

Sorry if this is a little long but it let’s you know my appearance does not prevent me giving as much as I get in discourse/discussion.
Yet if an aggressor/terrrorist for undemocratic or any reason wants to physically or psychologically harm anyone of any colour that is in my care or vicinity who is being an innocent democratic citizen, then I’d be happy to be the one to press the button/trigger (if carrying that professional authority) to silence such a threat. Consequences dealt with later in court (military or civil).

Hey guys I am me , a little browner than most of you even after a sun tan.

Someday maybe soon maybe some of us will meet and over a few beers, glasses of wine or even some Champers we can speak freely and have some good food.

I never got where I was by hiding (a little bit of Reg Perrin series coming in there):D

The fact that the only software switching window in EU …

You must think very highly of us on this forum to think that we would all understand the technicalities of your lengthy post. For myself, much of it might just as well have been written in hieroglyphics.

Leaving the technicalities of your profession aside, am I to understand that you fear for your life because of the knowledge you have at your disposal? ‘…on the pain of death’ and ‘the silver bullet that already has my name on it’ are, to say the least, very emotive phrases, but in this current context of internet anonymity are unsubstantiated and meaningless and add absolutely nothing to further the thread.

I, personally, would be interested to know what level of technical indispensibility removes the right for you to be at your dying Mother’s bedside (whilst she eats cake) and then prevents you attending her funeral?

    Regards,

The only big software switching window the banking world have in the EU is between midnight of Dec 23 and midnight of Dec 31 each year. Mum popped her clogs at 4 am on Dec 26. Every flight to where she was – was chokka, could have made it 1st class only to turn around and back.
Like any pilot; in good software management and new product implementation pre Y2K a complete road map of the switch had to be gone over with Directors and a point of no return calculated.
As a team of 3 tech experts (DBA, network, myself) reporting to a director and developing a 4 banks’ combined investment fund administration operation pre Y2K I was personally responsible for measuring, planning for and going for the decision at point of no return.
That point of no return was the 26 Dec.
Either the business users came in on 01 January to a new robust application or they saw no different from when they broke for Christmas.
I had every right to go but to see a mother dead was not much I could do was there. Had I known before (almost Faraday cage environment with respect to mobiles and email) Dec 25 sure I would have re sched. the plan and possibly angered a few business people but not after we were rolling. Same as a Capt. and First Officer with joint hands on throttles at take off – the point of no return, I was technically committed.
    Hence my grievous predicament.:(

No more intelligence than you just use some parts of it

Jay. Intelligent that you seem to be, and that there is a “Silver bullet” with your name on it, adding the fact you live in Edinburgh, like fast cars and ROWING, you wouldn’t be hard to find in two or three days, if what you have stated is true. I think if I were you, I would be moving, FAST, and changing my I.D. and having facial Plastic Surgery 🙂

    Hi Jim,
No I walk most places – the pot holes on Edinburgh’s roads even in buses can be a pain (real physical pain). No need to hide in my case, I am where I learnt my proprietary UNIX but now that I have as an old fogey just graduated with a BA (Hons) Accounting I am going to combine my boyhood dreams and loves. Work for a sub contractor to one of the aero space giants as the combination of skills I have (all honest and been there) are fairly unique including that of being able to fly. This almost means down to England or back in Europe where there are gorgeous rivers and a lot of flying.
Plastic surgery may be one I might consider if I go back to a 6 figure salary just to ensure I can attract a sensible female.;)
My light sabre is my brain and me.
BT know where I am and they can try to take me out but to what end?:D

I am not any more knowledgeable than you all just am aware of how …

    Gentleman and any ladies
BT is the licensee of all UK telecommunications throughput (as was Ma Bell of old in the USA) albeit now monitored and managed by OFTEL.
Digital and Analogue operate differently for technical reasons all of you are probably more expert at than I am.

Mobile telecommunications works using honeycomb style transmitters/relay aerials, base stations control at various points the throughput of wireless telephony, how can base stations be managed remotely (crisis, usage management, billing statistics, security [Ha!], etc) ? Only a crackpot will manage the base station remotely using their own mobile network (also bandwidth constraints for applying security patches and software updates).
    Need I say more folks.

My job for many years (21+), which cost me for my technical indispensability being unable as an only child to be at my mother’s bedside when she was dying or even get to her Anglican burial service has left me with OEM NDAs that even on the pain of death I cannot reveal. It still brings tears to my eyes when afterwards I had to individually interview the two bedside attendants (substituted by a mad relative) who fed my mum cake in her hospital bed when in reality she need resuscitation and ICU care

I fought the hackers, in many cases prevented any intrusion but it takes a very large open cheque to pay for technology and proprietary technical programmers, which some employers gladly buy in to.

What I can reveal though is a general technique we successfully used on the key ‘guardian’ servers in cluster configuration namely to have 5 x networks cards on each server. Different firewalls on each component of cluster. Heartbeat cross check, cluster fail over only when absolutely sure (milliseconds decision making though), then a technique I personally used was to let a hacker into the now safely isolated server and let him/her have a ‘field day’ of commercial authentic looking ‘garbage’ and traverse a pseudo network (harmless). Simultaneously if necessary trace routing can be used to see the hacker’s route (often well disguised by hacker though) in.
The above is when it is unplanned intrusion/hacking is taking place.

What we are discussing here though is well planned (the correct fees greasing the correct ‘filthy palms’) internally planned hacking; in fact not hacking at all simply monitoring gone corrupt.

Only one way to get to the heart of who is responsible. Staffing logs of all server management over the period long before and after the supposed hacking dates.

Examination at raw server level (at server operating system command line – not through multiple management software interfaces) technical operating system audit trails to see who went in at ‘root/super user level’ and when and for how long. Why has to be asked of each known entry login (person). What if any was installed or substituted (object files as they are called in the now proliferate ‘rubbish’ non proprietary LINUX can be created by anyone and made exactly the same size and name as a vital component in the Operating System, and substituted in a second by a corrupt employee using ‘root/super user’ access rights or using something called a SETUID).

I have spoken at length on the LINUX ‘evils’ to the highest in the business world but they listen not to a ‘brownie’ like me but to those who they choose to listen to.

Politicians shouting, making senior police officers the scapegoats isn’t what this is about it is a technical conundrum but can be solved given a little patience and diligence by harnessing some of the best proprietary UNIX brains in the world (will they bother – probably not as they are all sick of fighting a rearguard action against commercial corruption which this is as opposed to intrusive hacking which can be a technical challenge).

Here I must stop as to say anymore is to sign the firing of that silver bullet that already has my name on it. Not afraid to die but too many air shows and new aircraft I wish to see fly starting with the ‘plastic pig’.

Finally for a mere £1 buy from Amazon a book written way way back but still holds true on intrusive hacking – a man like me who remained technically true/rich, relatively poor (richer than me though) – but a real hero – ignored by every authority until he single handed uncovered the biggest intrusive hack of its time. “Cuckoos Egg by Clifford Stohl”.

In closing – what have BT got in technical excellence (ZILCH) to match the honest technical guys I know some sadly now dead when most of us gave BT two words that have as initials F.O. when they tried to recruit us.

I wish to not say any more on this thread with regards this sad sad tale which is happening in many many other cases as it sickens me to see how corrupt and sordid some technical people have become and I always ask myself WHY ? I am going to return to a aircraft ‘speak’ only on this forum – my real love along with rowing and fast cars and of course sensible attractive members of the fairer sex.
