Thanks for the photos! What great times we live in.
Years ago ,unless you were there, you would need to wait for a future issue of an aviation mag for probably lower quality photos than those.
I did take the opportunity to rejoin FoTFC yesterday. Do they send out a membership card or do you print something out ?
I’m looking forward to this as always.
The Fighter Collection should be given credit for how they have managed situations beyond their control regarding airshow rules and the silly advance ticket debacle.
At least you only just require the car pass and aren’t charged for it.
I have grown tired of the attitude of the IWM of late and from next year instead of just going through the motions and pencilling in the May and September Duxford shows I’m missing them altogether and planning for maybe OW instead.
I’ve cancelled my FoD membership because it doesn’t represent value for money for me , and besides all that, try renewing your membership! The girl is forever ‘away from her desk’ ! If an organisation such as B17 Preservation where every penny counts can facilitate online membership renewal and the LLA then so can FoD.
Flying Legends however is an example of how an airshow should be run and with the paying customer firmly in the forefront of their plans.
No silly impossible to achieve ‘themes’ as you are given with the IWM shows .
Roll on the weekend, I am actually looking forward to going to Duxford for the first time since………..well, last July!
You must be able to see them now !
We are very lucky to be able to track its progress but the tracking system recommended is so clunky I’ve gone over to FR24 where the King Air is showing up .
Beautiful shots of ‘Frenesi’
Was it Ed Shipley at the controls?
PT hasn’t updated his Facebook page in ages , he always keeps his followers up to date with fabulous write ups .
I wouldn’t be too bothered at losing the two IWM shows , Flying Legends I’d be very sad to see go.
No angst on my part, it’s a pain rather than a major inconvenience.
I don’t keep a printer and unlike RIAT who allow you to show your ticket on a smart phone or tablet I have to pester a friend or relative to print out the ticket and soppy car pass .
I’m sure IWM did say you can show your ticket on a phone too but what of the car pass ? Do I wave my phone at a parking steward as I cruise by?
So this isn’t one long whinge, I do enjoy the resultant reduced crowds and finally being able to get a seat in the FoD enclosure and a quicker departure from the car park at the end.
FFS, Next weekends show will hardly be the gridlock of ‘Two Lancs’ ……………..
Using the old argument that other events music or sporting use advance ticketing doesn’t stack up, particularly with a headline act or team.
Tickets for many music acts will sell out and try getting a Cup Final ticket now, so advance purchase is essential.
I will be surprised if Duxford sells out a few days ahead of this next show.
If the Hawker Typhoon RB396 or a Mosquito (insert your own ‘star’ item here ) appears at a future Duxford show then I will fully understand the advance ticket system .
I have attended past Duxford shows with very unfavourable weather forecasts in the past and reasoned that if it’s a non flyer due to weather I at least have the numerous museum hangars to view and shelter in.
The weather argument doesn’t apply as much to Duxford as somewhere like Biggin or RIAT where there is virtually no undercover protection in the event of a washout.
It’s a cynical policy which we are stuck with now , we love aviation and they know that we need our ‘fix’ particularly after a long winter layoff .
Crowds staying away only effects the warbird operators .
When the public wanted to give some of the big supermarkets a ‘bloody nose’ they rushed off to the albeit s#%t tip operators Lidl and Aldi.
A quick tip to the IWM organisers ( not TFC who treat their crowd with respect ) if you really want to disgruntle and alienate your customers, ban all cars :stupid:
It’s a daft idea for all the reasons many have already stated.
I get why RIAT do it and Biggin Hill went all ticket because they wanted to bring back a show that didn’t have the disruptive effect of the famous Air Fair on the local community.
For Biggin to have a thriving business at the airport they need to ‘keep the locals onside’
As for Duxford , it’s a pain. I’m sat here trying to guess the weather next weekend before ordering a ticket and wondering how late in the week I can buy a ticket .
Once I have purchased the ticket, I will hope there are no last minute family/life/car hitches meaning I’m left with a ticket for a show I can’t go to.
And still they persist with a car parking charge……….as long as I have a car I’m not taking public transport to an air show !
The IWM shows have a pretty poor attitude to their customers.
Nice shots Dan.
Glad to see PT in those shots, he hasn’t appeared on Facebook for a while with one of his brilliant updates and with no appearance last week at OW I had wondered if he had jacked it all in !
I can’t edit my post for technical reasons, but I’m told by people who know me better than I know myself that it was actually Mildenhall 1998 when I first saw Shipley. A mere 19 years ago this May! Apologies for the fake news. Point is, they’ve all been doing this for many, many years and are very, very good at it.
(Fixed for you. Moggy)
Thanks very much Elliott, you have saved me the job of replying to a truly ridiculous statement and done it much better than I would have.
By the way, Air Fete 98 was the first time I saw the brilliant Ed Shipley too.
Thanks very much.
I was very much looking forward to returning with a friend for a ‘sit in’ in the Hurricane, sadly now not to be.
Nice to see this Hurricane in the air though.
Is this the Hurri that NWHA were/are getting? (Obviously not at NW now)
